Our Response to COVID-19: Information
Globally
Good evening,

January 15, 2021 -- This week, our planet reported 4.95 million new coronavirus infections and 95,387 additional covid-19 deaths with the global surge getting more aggressive in most geographies. Even China is now reporting a spike in cases and the first officially reported covid-19 death within its borders since last May. Spain is peaking again, breaking the 40,000 single-day new cases mark for the first time as Great Britain had its deadliest week, losing 7,462 of its infected patients. In Central and South America, Mexico, Colombia, and Bolivia peaked again; Peru is experiencing a new spike while Brazil is now averaging over 60,000 new daily cases. South Africa peaked again earlier this week and is experiencing a steep hike in new deaths. India's new daily cases are stabilizing under 20,000 as the huge nation launches a massive vaccination effort: 30 million doctors, nurses, and other front-line workers to be followed by 270 million others. Portugal also peaked this week and went on national lockdown Friday night while France started a national daily curfew starting at 6 pm this Saturday, as the country's covid-19 death toll passed 70,000. Over the last seven days, one person has died of covid-19 every 6 seconds somewhere on our pale blue dot.

Global COVID-19 death toll tops 2 million | reuters.com
It took nine months for the world to record the first 1 million deaths from the novel coronavirus but only three months to go from 1 million to 2 million deaths, illustrating an accelerating rate of fatalities. (Graphic: tmsnrt.rs/34pvUyi)

So far in 2021, deaths have averaged over 11,900 per day or one life lost every eight seconds, according to a Reuters tally.

“Our world has reached a heart-wrenching milestone,” United Nations chief Antonio Guterres said in a video statement.

“Behind this staggering number are names and faces: the smile now only a memory, the seat forever empty at the dinner table, the room that echoes with the silence of a loved one,” he said, calling for more global coordination and funding for the vaccination effort.

By April 1, the global death toll could approach 2.9 million, according to a forecast from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. (bit.ly/3bHmcf0)

Given how fast the virus is spreading due to more infectious variants, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned the worst could be ahead.

Tracking COVID-19 vaccine distribution by state: How many people in the US have received a shot? | usatoday.com
As the COVID-19 pandemic ravages the USA, vaccines have begun to be distributed across the country and its territories. Two different vaccines, one made by Pfizer-BioNTech and another from Moderna, have been authorized for emergency use and are part of the widespread distribution process. The first shots were given Dec. 14, and states are able to place new orders every week.

More COVID-19 cases are being recorded this winter than at any previous period of the pandemic. Many states struggle to administer vaccines at the same rate the vaccines are shipped.

Anyone age 16 or older can receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, but the Moderna vaccine is authorized only for adults. States prioritize at-risk populations to be vaccinated first, including medical staff, people in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities, essential workers, the elderly, and people with medical conditions that put them at greater risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19.

Some federal agencies manage their own distribution and vaccination processes outside state governments. These numbers are not included in the state tallies.

In California
It appears California's new covid-19 infections may have peaked, but the state's new deaths peaked again yesterday with 694 new deaths, and the fatalities total for the week is up sharply (28%) from last week's numbers, as we mourn the loss of 3,749 more Californians.
‘Light at the end of the tunnel’ or a small blip? Flattening COVID-19 numbers bring hope in California | latimes.com
Despite hospitals overflowing with patients, heartbreaking numbers of deaths, and COVID-19 infection rates hovering at dangerous levels, there are some signs that the daily increase in the number of coronavirus cases is beginning to flatten in California.

It may take a few more days or weeks to be assured of the trend — and the flattening could be reversed if people ease up further on mask-wearing and social distancing. But a number of state and local officials are voicing cautious optimism that the unrestrained, exponential daily worsening of the pandemic has slowed.

Gov. Gavin Newsom described the flattening numbers as “light at the end of the tunnel,” adding that the coronavirus test positivity rate and the number of people in hospitals and intensive care units with COVID-19 have been declining.

“We’ve seen some encouraging signs,” Newsom said. “But now, more than ever, it’s incumbent upon us not to let our guard down, not to let our masks off, and to make sure that we’re doing everything in our power to maintain that discipline purposefulness to work our way through yet another surge.”

In the last seven days, California has confirmed 296,127 new covid-19 cases (+4%) and the disease has killed 3,749 more Californians (+28%).

  • COVID-19 California cases: 2,925,929 (+39,132)
  • COVID-19 California deaths: 32,971 (+694) new peak
  • COVID-19 California death rate: 1.13%
  • COVID-19 California testing: 37,449,536 individual tests (+319,170)
  • COVID-19 California positivity rate: 7.81%
  • COVID-19 California single-day positivity rate: 12.26%
In the Central Valley
The Madera County Department of Public Health COVID-19 Update:

1/15/2021: Reporting 158 cases from the public, 22 from the Central California Woman’s Facility, and 49 from Valley State Prison (total 229 cases), bringing the total number of reported cases to 12,778.
Of the 12,778:
  • 2,902 active case (including 33 Madera County residents hospitalized in Madera County)
  • 9,746 recovered (103 released from isolation)
  • 130 deceased
Including its prison population, Madera County is averaging 162 new cases per day (101 per 100K), with 1,133 new cases revealed over the last 7 days. We need to get down to an average of 11 cases per day or 77 cases over 7 days to switch from purple to red (from "widespread" to "substantial" contagion risk).

Today, the seven local counties together reported 2,886 new infections and 48 new coronavirus deaths. In the combined 7 counties, COVID-19 has infected 257,820 people and has killed 2,531 residents of our region since it claimed its first central valley victim, in Madera, on March 26, 2020.

Our friends and neighbors are needlessly dying, many families are suffering. Science and the courage to follow its logic will solve this pandemic, any other discourse is inadequate.
COVID-19 in Madera + 6 local counties (+% is the positivity rate)

  • Mariposa: 341 cases (+7), 4 deaths, 12,885 tests, 2.65+%
  • Merced: 23,492 cases (+293), 296 deaths (+6)
  • Madera: 12,778 cases (+229), 130 deaths, 153,960 tests, 8.30+%
  • Fresno: 79,003 cases (+755), 932 deaths (+28), 638,718 tests, 12.37+%
  • Tulare: 40,176 cases (+453), 501 deaths (+7)
  • Kings: 18,453 cases, 110 deaths, 233,070 tests, 7.92+%
  • Kern: 83,547 cases (+1,149), 558 deaths (+7), 373,037 tests, 22.40+%

COVID-19 in the 7 counties together

  • 7 counties cases: 257,820 (+2,886)
  • 7 counties deaths: 2,531 (+48)
  • 7 counties death rate: 0.98%
This was the deadliest covid-19 week yet. The 7 counties graphs, above and below, represent data from the week ending on January 15, 2021. Each of the last four weeks has reported the highest numbers of covid-19 deaths, successively, culminating again this week with 250 deaths. 28% of the total deaths of the pandemic in the seven local counties have occurred in the last 28 days. The number of new cases was slightly lower this week: 19,689 (-455), although not all the data were available at the time this report was written.
The graph below is a bit misleading as case data for Fresno and Kings counties have not yet been published for 1/15/2021; only the fatalities numbers from Fresno County were made available as I wrote this report. The overall picture is stark and all seven counties are in the midst of sustained and uncontrolled viral spread.
Keep observing the simple yet proven safety habits of physical-distancing, mask-wearing, and frequent hand-washing, that will help drive down new infections and new deaths, to a level low enough so as to give us a chance to reopen our schools for onsite education and thus, reopen our economy. Nothing else will work until we have massively administered a safe and effective covid-19 vaccine -- currently estimated by vaccinating up to 85% of the population -- to finally reach herd immunity.
