Coronavirus puts utility resource management in focus
Power Engineering

Each year, the U.S. federal government gives states and hospitals approximately $1bn for disaster preparedness. That is more than the entire healthcare budget of many Third World countries.

Healthcare experts say if coronavirus, known as COVID-19, a respiratory disease originating in China, spreads widely in the United States one of the biggest challenges will be staffing hospitals.  READ MORE

OSHA advisory committee discusses major industry hazards
Construction Dive

Last week, the Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health (ACCSH), which makes construction regulation recommendations to OSHA, held two public teleconference meetings to address how the agency could increase awareness and potentially update its standards for hazards that pose a great risk to industry workers - falls, excavation and trenches, opioids and suicide.   READ MORE
Biomass fuels made from grass could help mitigate global warming
Engineering and Technology

The study, conducted by researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), Israel, and Michigan State University (MSU), USA, examined a number of different cellulosic biofuel crops to test their potential as a petroleum alternative in ethanol fuel and electric light-duty vehicles, including passenger cars and small trucks.

According to experts, climate change mitigation scenarios - limiting global temperature increases to 1.5°C - rely on decarbonising vehicle fuel with bioenergy production together with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).   READ MORE

Massachusetts Utility Pleads Guilty to 2018 Gas Explosion
ENR

Columbia Gas-the Massachusetts utility responsible for fatal 2018 natural gas explosions and fires north of Boston-is set to plead guilty in a U.S. court in Boston to violations of federal law.

The guilty plea follows a settlement by the firm and its parent company NiSource, to pay a $53 million federal fine.

In announcing the agreement, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, Andrew Lelling, told reporters that the fine "is by far the largest criminal fine ever imposed under the Pipeline Safety Act."   READ MORE

A Grand Challenge Needs to Inspire Grand Solutions
nspe.org

"Climate change," whatever the cause, is a phrase fraught with controversy. It has become so politicized that the important underlying issues often get lost. Rather than devote an entire column to arguments for or against climate change, I think it's important to instead focus on the abundance of opportunities professional engineers have to invent creative, innovative solutions to issues surrounding environmental sustainability and resilience. And to look at some of the contributions engineers are already making.  READ MORE

How the PE License Can Power a Career
nspe.org

For many engineering students, the PE license is a vague, off-in-the-distance professional goal. If they're lucky, they hear about the license from professors, but the true realization of its importance doesn't hit until they reach the workplace.

NSPE member Ron Black, P.E., was one of those students. But the former electrical engineering student from the University of Missouri-Columbia now has the wisdom that comes with a 33-year (and counting) career. That wisdom comes with a different perspective and appreciation for the license, one he didn't have in the mid-1980s.  READ MORE
