We celebrate Women's History Month to remind ourselves of the accomplishments of women throughout the years to our culture and society.
As an influential leader, Bonnie Clearwater is recognized for her curatorial vision, community outreach, education and for developing the careers of emerging artists. Bonnie is the director and chief curator at NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale, and FAB member and long-time supporter. In February, Bonnie was invited as guest speaker to the board of directors meeting where she shared how the museum shifted to a virtual platform during quarantine and now provides a rich 360 degree museum experience of the exhibits, current and past, all available on line. The website has seen a 75% increase with the addition of a virtual catalogue of over 3,500 works from its permanent collection, modules for learning, art talks, and on line shopping at the gift shop. For those who want an in person experience, the museum is open, and with the guidance of the NSU COVID Task Force procedures have been implemented to ensure safety. NSU Art Museum has also incorporated a self-guided tour feature into the exhibitions made accessible by mobile phones and headsets.
Among her initiatives at NSU Art Museum are, the development of a world-class exhibition program, expansion of the museum’s education initiatives and public programming, and increased engagement with diverse audiences. Ms. Clearwater's leadership and foresight has created opportunity for many emerging artists, the museum continues to support the acquisition of art by local unknown artists via donations made to an acquisition fund at NSU. Bonnie is also an author, art historian and has played an integral role in sustaining, enriching and cultivating a bright and inclusive ARTS community. About 5 five years ago, FAB members and life partners, John Tambasco and Kent McIntyre signed up for a beginners art class at NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale. Kent wasn’t terribly interested, not having painted before, but reluctantly gave in thinking, "why not give it a shot." They both ended up finding a passion and continued more courses over the next several semesters. Eventually, instructor Lark Keeler really opened Kent's eyes by teaching him there is no real "wrong way" to express yourself. "I simply had to shed my self- imposed limitations" said Kent. After two courses with her, he begun painting at home, taking over the third bedroom that doubled as his office. The bedroom soon became to small and crowded to create the larger pieces he wanted to do. Then fate stepped in, and Kent and John were able to secure a vacated space very reasonably and PRESTO, Kent had his own private studio escape!
February 22-28, 2020 brought on another new experience, Kent's first private art exhibition, occupying the entire space at Broward Art Guild. The opening gala was hugely successful with 150+ people attending and fruitful in sales. The staff at BAG were blown away, calling it the most well-received, successful exhibition they had experienced. Another show was scheduled for February 2021 but cancelled because of COVID. With plans to reschedule his second exhibition soon, Kent continues to create new pieces, including commissioned work and stays extremely busy with a successful real estate business in a hot market.

has been extremely busy in February. 65 FAB members participated in the Grants screening process with almost 50 applications submitted. Volunteers, divided into six teams, met with hopeful grantees, attended trainings and made recommended allocations all on line. Volunteers are the heart of FAB as are the amazing arts organizations we all passionately support. We would like to extend our gratitude and heart -felt thank you for all the great work completed by the FAB GRANTS COMMITTEE! Let's raise a glass, as a team we accomplished a very good thing in a very challenging time. As members you have the opportunity to VOTE for the organization's recommended to receive an award.
