Dream Big! You Are Joking, Right?!

Many of us had hopes that 2020 was going to be an amazing year. A year of clarity, vision and purpose. After all, we are talking about 20/20. Perfect vision. As 2020 comes to a close, we can look expectantly towards a new year, dread what is ahead, or drift along. Yes, the year ended and we are still in a pandemic. We are still dealing with so many uncertainties. My challenge to you is to keep dreaming.

Think about what it would take to be able to say 2021 was an amazing year for my program or my classroom. What are some things you wanted to accomplish? Those things you have talked about, dreamed about, but kept putting off? Maybe you had dreams for 2020 and the pandemic made everything collapse. Are they still important to you? Put them on your list.

Look at your list. Choose one that feels doable and one that will take some effort to make it happen. Write out the steps it will take to accomplish the doable goal. Put dates by each step. Put it on your calendar. If something happens and you miss a step, give it a new deadline. Do not let it fall off your calendar. Now, let's look at the dream that will take more time, energy, effort etc. Put it on your calendar as a weekly event. Then click on it each week and choose one step you can take that will move you closer to your dream. Do it weekly, until you see your dream come true.

If you take the time now to make a plan, you will be able to accomplish more than you ever thought possible. You will be able to see goals and dreams fulfilled. 2020 threw us a major curve ball; however, if you reflect back upon 2020, you will likely find many ways that you have grown. One thing we may be able to learn from this past year, is we do not control what happens around us, but we can control our response. Go ahead. Dream. Plan. Look to 2021 with expectancy.

Winter: It's Raining Snowmen!

The winter months are here and that usually means more time inside with the children. Try going outside more often for shortened amounts of time to get the children fresh air, some physical movement, and the chance to connect to nature's winter months. If being outside isn't a possibility because of the weather, here are some fun ideas to fill their day with learn through play activities and experiences.

Activity suggestions:
  • Dance and freeze like a snowperson
  • Make & design a Winter Wonderland for the dramatic play learning center
  • Make and play with fake snow
  • Freeze water in different size/shaped containers; as added fun, you may want to color the water using food-dye
  • Add ice, plastic polar bears & penguins to the water sensory table
  • Learn, sing, and play snowman or winter songs
  • Make and cut snowflakes
  • Winter scavenger hunt
  • Snowball fight with fake (paper) snowballs
  • Cotton ball counting

Happy New Year from your QRIS Stars Outreach Specialist!

I would like to introduce myself and let you know I am always available to answer any questions regarding Stars criteria or assist you in applying for Stars or increasing your Star level.

Reaching for the Stars is the name of Oklahoma's Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS). Oklahoma was the first state in the nation to implement a QRIS. Our goals are for every provider to Reach for the Stars, grow professionally and be recognized for their accomplishments, for parents and the public to recognize and value quality practices, and for all of Oklahoma's children to benefit from the highest quality early childhood experiences.

What do teachers report as their #1 training need? If you answered challenging behavior, we are excited to let you know about some amazing new training that is being offered to all child care providers for FREE. The Pyramid Model (PM) training is now available on the Statewide Training Calendar. There are 3 different age groups: Infant Toddler, Birth-5, and Preschool. There are Modules 1 and 2 for each age group and Module 3 is the same for all three age groups. Type "Pyramid" in the course title search on the Statewide Training Calendar to locate the Modules. We encourage you to take advantage of this free quality training.

The Pyramid Model is a framework for promoting social and emotional competence for ALL children and effectively addresses challenging behavior. To find out more about the PM, watch this short overview video.

Don't forget we are always available and committed to help you achieve the highest quality care for Oklahoma's children.

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.
