[March 12, 2020] As you know, we are facing an unprecedented health crisis in our world because of the new coronavirus. In Italy and other countries, the health care system is overwhelmed and people are dying from lack of available resources. Sadly, the virus is here in the United States and it is spreading rapidly. A number of new cases have been discovered here in our area in the Diocese of San Diego.

The Bishop’s Office requests all parochial schools to follow the guidance of their local public school districts and to temporarily close when they do.
Most of San Diego’s school districts have announced their temporary closure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “California has now entered a critical new phase in the fight to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten and Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner said in a joint statement reports the Union Tribune.

[March 10, 2020] As the concern about the COVID-19 outbreak spreads, and as we begin to suspect that there are many more cases in our communities than are yet known, I would like our churches to update their preparations for this disease. Although, for most people, the illness poses a low risk, for the elderly, vulnerable, and immunocompromised it can be deadly. We owe it to our congregations to take precautions to protect the vulnerable among us.
