PACE Case Study: Medication-Related Fall Risk, Smoking Cessation, and the Risk of Adverse Drug Events

A 59-year-old female PACE participant has a past medical history of major depressive disorder (MDD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), generalized chronic pain and fatigue, type 2 diabetes, diabetic polyneuropathy, vitamin D deficiency, insomnia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and restless leg syndrome. The participant is a former smoker who is prescribed varenicline for smoking cessation therapy, and has a MedWise Risk Scoreā„¢ of 29 out of 50 (high)
.
Medication Packaging and Virus Transmission: Evidence Suggests No Danger

While we understand that there may be concerns about participant medication packaging being a possible transmission source, medication safety is of the utmost importance at CareKinesis; we take all precautions when packaging medications.

Richard Schamp, MD, Chief Medical Officer, and Nishita Shah Amin, PharmD, BCGP, BCPS, CMWA, Director, Pharmacy Practice Residency Programs, Tabula Rasa HealthCare (TRHC) recently examined current research into surface transmission of the novel coronavirus. To date, there have been no published cases or evidence of medication packaging transmission occurring. In addition, most PACE participants serviced by CareKinesis receive their medications at home, several hours after the medications were packaged for shipment, further decreasing the risk of any outside contamination on the packaging.

As a reminder, CareKinesis' packaging options are customized based on each participant's individual needs. Most of our PACE participants use Medication Adherence Cards (MAC), which has been shown to increase adherence and support our science-based medication safety processes by avoiding competitive type multi-drug interactions. Additionally, MAC packaging is frequently easier to handle than other types of packaging, such as pouches, particularly for the elderly.

If you have any questions about the safety of our packaging, please contact your CareKinesis Client Liaison.
