Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Friends and Members of the Ark and Dove Community,

We have a special congregational meeting this Sunday in the Lobby at 10:20 to hear a report from the Nominating Team. Don Ziegler will be nominated to serve on Session. The Session voted today to make it a hybird meeting on Zoom for all you travelers, YouTubers and Facebook fans. It will be nothing technologically fancy. Someone will bring a laptop into the Lobby as the choir will be practicing in the sanctuary; but your presence and vote will count and we can take questions. CLICK HERE for the Link.

Professor Walter Brueggeman taught Bible at Columbia Presbyterian Seminary for many years. He is in our sister denomination, the United Church of Christ and an esteemed scholar. I thought his prayer, printed below, fit our current national conundrum concerning gun violence and so we have provided it as the prayer of the week for the Arkive. Good to say it slow two times.

As we have mentioned before, ACT Anne Arundel Connecting Together, AIM Action in Montgomery and PATH People Acting Together in Howard have banded together ( about 75 congregations – Jewish, Christian and Moslem) to build power in the state of MD. Together we will be hosting two statewide candidates meeting.  The dates are Sunday, June 12 at 5:30pm at First Baptist of Guilford in Columbia, and Thursday, June 23 at 7:00pm at Ark and Dove. These will be in-person and Zoom. We have asked all of the statewide candidates to each come to one of the two events. You can register below for June Actions.

Pentecost in the minds of many people marks the Birthday of the church and this Sunday in Pentecost. You can read the first four verses of the Book of Acts below to help you remember the experience. The choir has a special anthem and the church will be decorated in bright colors. Please wear red, yellow or orange (or all three) if you can and come celebrate this transformational moment in the life of the church.

Peace of Christ,

Tim

Verse and Prayer
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
-Acts 2: 1-4
There is a long list of threats around us: terror, cancer, falling markets, killing, others unlike us in all their variety, loneliness, shame, death--the list goes on and we know it well.

And in the midst of threat of every kind, you appear among us in your full power, in your deep fidelity, you speak among us the one word that could matter: "Do not fear." And we, in our several fearfulnesses, are jarred by your utterance. On a good day, we know that your sovereign word is true.

So give us good days by your rule, free enough to rejoice, open enough to change, trusting enough to move out of new obedience, grace enough to be forgiven and then to forgive. We live by your word. Speak it to us through the night, that we may have many good days through your gift. Amen

Walter Brueggemann
from Prayers for a Privileged People

This Sunday at both the 9:00 and 10:30 services, the choir will be joined by guest singers from Baltimore and surrounding area. We have Morgan State alumni and members of Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church, and our very own David Lawson, who will be reciting The Lord's Prayer in his native African language, Ewe. This will be incorporated into our piece, "Baba Yetu", which is The Lord's Prayer in the African language, Swahili. It is a fusion of chanting, strong rhythmic lines, and dynamic contrasts. From the attire that the choir and soloists wear, to the way that they sing across the entire platform, it is a perfect way to celebrate Pentecost. We will be accompanied by Paula Sparks on the piano, and Diane Yates on djembe. This will be the choir's big send-off before we break for the summer. The Prelude piece, "The Lone, Wild Bird", will feature two Morgan State alumni, and Laura Doughty, on flute. You won't want to miss the start of the service this week!

Next Tuesday, the band will begin rehearsing, and you will get to hear some of our new music beginning on June 26th! If you are interested in being a part of our new band, please reach out to me. We will have many small groupings in our new, reimagined design of what the band will look like. It's an exciting way to begin our Summer!

Wishing you a happy and healthy weekend.

Warm regards,

Rebecca
