Applications for District 1 City Council Member Temporary Replacement Due Friday, Nov. 20
Due to a recent resignation of the council member for District 1, the City Council may appoint a resident of District 1 to serve in an interim capacity pending an election in May 2021.

While the City awaits word from Gov. Abbott as to whether he will order an special emergency election, the City Council is requesting applications from qualified residents of District 1 who are interested in serving in that interim capacity.

To apply, submit the application form or pick up an application in the City Secretary’s Office, 200 N. Fifth St. For more information, call 972-205-2404 or visit GarlandTX.gov. All applications must be received by Friday, Nov. 20.
Garland Names New Assistant City Manager
The City of Garland has named Judson Rex as Assistant City Manager for Planning & Economic Development. He will oversee City departments that participate in planning, economic development and redevelopment activities.

His more than 10 years of combined experience as a city manager/town manager features extensive experience in planning and economic development. Prior to becoming a city manager/town manager, Judson served in numerous capacities in municipal planning departments.

Judson will begin his tenure with the City on Jan. 4. Learn more.
Fences: Maintenance and Repair Virtual Class Tuesday, Nov. 17

Replacing a fence can be a pricey investment. During this free virtual class from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, you'll learn from the experts with the Garland Parks Department how you can maintain and repair your fence year round so it stands stronger for longer.

Home Maintenance: Winterization Virtual Class Thursday, Nov. 19

Winter weather can do a number on our homes. Experts with the Garland Parks Department will teach you how to prepare for winter and protect your home from unwanted damage at this free virtual class from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.

Sip, Shop and See at Thirsty Third Thursday
Celebrate Thirsty Third Thursdays in Downtown Garland from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.

Fire Department Blood Drive Saturday, Nov. 28

Appointments are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Garland Fire Department Administration parking lot, 1500 State Highway 66.

Made Fresh & Local: A Garland Christmas
While we cannot gather together to celebrate this year, the City of Garland is pleased to bring you a special treat for the holiday season, “Made Fresh & Local: A Garland Christmas.” This holiday season we will feature virtual programs streaming on three different evenings for the whole family to enjoy.

A Christmas on the Square tree lighting ceremony will not take place in 2020. You can view the streaming programs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, and on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, along with an encore presentation on Christmas Day, Dec. 25. Learn more.
COVID-19 Updates
The Garland Health Department has received reports of 2,394 active cases out of 10,420 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as 90 deaths. The City will update its posted case numbers each afternoon.

City Council Meetings
Nov. 16 and 17
The Garland City Council Work Session will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16. Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17. Council Members elected Nov. 3 will be sworn in during the Nov. 17 Regular Meeting.

District 3 Town Hall Postponed
Due to the recent increase in COVID cases and a non-COVID family health issue, District 3 Council Member Jerry Nickerson is postponing his Nov. 19 Town Hall meeting. When a new date is identified, it will be posted to the City’s website and announced in this newsletter.

My Possibilities, which was scheduled to present an update on their residential development project in District 3, will provide a presentation that will be posted later this month to the City’s Facebook and Twitter pages and on NextDoor.

Boards & Commissions Meetings
All upcoming Boards & Commissions meetings can be found on the Public Meetings calendar at GarlandTX.gov.

Due to COVID-19 public gathering restrictions, the meetings will be virtual. You can watch the meetings online. The virtual meeting link will be included in the individual meeting agenda. You may participate by telephone. Dial-in numbers will be posted with the virtual meeting information.
