Welcome to Winter Spirit Week!
As we enter the final five regular school days of 2019, we have added a bit of festivity with special themes to each day beginning with Monday's "Holiday Socks Day." While we want all of our Grenadiers to enjoy this last week, these remaining five days are also very important in terms of final grades. Please be sure to turn in any missing classwork or assignments now. Reports cards will be released next month.
As this issue was about to be sent out, one word jumped to mind -
momentum. A quick scroll on down will show our community that both students and staff have not "tapped the brakes" even though winter break is just around the corner. This reflects so well on our high school. Let's make these last five days count and continue to finish strong!

CHS Hispanic Honor Society
Students took time off on Saturday, December 9th to participate in not one, but
two community service events! Students spent Saturday morning at
Prince of Peace helping out at the Winterfest. In the afternoon, many students made their way to their next location. At
Good Shepard students help out at the church potluck by picking up trash, serving drinks, and greeting guests.

Thank you to two valued Partners in Education!
Jeremiah's Italian Ice donated over 2,000 coupons and
Texas Roadhouse donated various memorabilia. The donations from our Partners help us to properly recognize students for earning HERO positive behavior points.
Making sense of the chart: The American Customer Satisfaction Index is published in large part by the University of Michigan each month and tracks over 400 firms. The results are published in leading trade magazines and the business press. We are proud to see our Partner in Education, Texas Roadhouse, listed #1 in their 2019 survey of U.S. full service restaurants - Look up any of the ACSI firm's results here.

Did you know that our students have access to a variety of industry certification programs?
These on-campus programs are considered dual enrollment, which means students are earning weighted credits towards their GPA, as well as learning industry skills and finishing with certification. Each program will be highlighted in the
Colonial Connection so that our students, parents, and community members can learn about the technical career pathways that are possible along with a high school diploma for every Grenadier.

Spotlight on Digital Design:
Computer Science Technology and Engineering (STEM) programs
During Year 1, students learn how to master Photoshop through Adobe Creative Cloud. Students learn the tools (typography and fonts, pens, theme and tone) and the interface (menu and options panels) as they practice navigating the programs. Students learn design elements and principles (balance harmony contrast value). This year, students will learn how to create Snapchat filters, along with photograph manipulation and drawing.
During Year 2, students use the program "In Design" to create layouts for letterheads, brochures, flyers, and other publications. During Year 3, students use Illustrator to combine the skills learned in year 1 and 2: photo manipulation and typography. Students might also have the opportunity to use "Maya," an animation program used by well known brands such as Pixar and Disney.
This is Mr. Hoeth's first year teaching in the program, and he is excited about the opportunities for his students! Those who take and pass the industry certifications each year of the program are able to get into the industry - whether it be advertising, marketing, or creative - with these valuable skill sets on their resumes. Eventually, the goal of the program is to be able to link the 3 dimensional, digital design and coding programs to create new opportunities like video game design.

A student in Digital Design 1 used geometric shapes to create an animated version of Rhianna's face. There are many other tools learned in Geometrics, the digital platform through which students practice digital design.
Another student, Crystina, used Photoshop to blend an image of a peach and Kanye West. She said she learned how to use the lasso tool to create new images.

Students in Ms. Sarouf's French 1 class created their own Parisian restaurants! In this unit on Gastronomy, students created a French menu, researched recipes and engaged in conversation utilizing newly learned vocabulary to express likes and dislikes related to food. Students utilized a rubric to self-assess their skill level after the Gallery Walk. Ms. Sarouf states that she wants students to feel like they are having a conversation at a French cafe because the casual environment is conducive to language immersion.

Girls Basketball
Girls JV and Varsity Basketball teams defeated the University Cougars this Wednesday! The "Boot" stays home for Basketball as well! (If you look closely, you can see the "Boot" in the form of a basketball sneaker on the trophy.) Come out and support the girls at their next home match!

Constant Support from the Top!
Dr. Maestre always makes an effort to come out and support his Colonial athletes and cheer them on during sporting events. At the Girls Varsity Basketball team they beat University by 50 points on Wednesday night and Dr. Maestre was front and center cheering on the Lady Grenadiers.

College and Career Resource Center Update
|
|
Three seniors were interviewed regarding their admission acceptance into a college or university:
Julian Olivieri (left) is a hardworking student who was ecstatic to find out he had been accepted to both Stetson University and Barry University. Though he currently does not know what he will be majoring in, Julian is sure to succeed in whatever path he decides to follow.
Oneil Nieves (center) is a student with an outgoing personality who was extremely excited when he found out he has been accepted to Nova South Eastern University and given a scholarship of $68,000. Oneil plans on pursuing a career in Criminal Justice.
Pictured to the right, Rachel Salmon is a very passionate worker who has been accepted to Rollins College, Eckerd College, Nova Southeastern University and Seminole State University, though she was most excited about Rollins and Eckerd Colleges. Rachel plans on pursuing a degree in Marine Biology.

Special Recognition by the OCPS School Board!

Alexander Torres
Grenadier Alexander Torres was recognized at the School Board meeting on Tuesday for earning a College Board PSAT scholarship valued at over $600. Alex increased his SAT score by over 300 points to earn this scholarship! How did he accomplish this? Well, the Official SAT practice through Khan Academy certainly had something to do with it! Congratulations, Alex!
