Susan A. Siltanen Graduate
Research Symposium

Postponed - may be rescheduled

The 2020 Susan A. Siltanen Graduate Research Symposium, hosted by the Graduate School and the Graduate Student Senate, will take place March 24, 2020. The symposium provides graduate students with an opportunity to present their research to faculty, staff and students in a competitive environment through oral and poster presentations. The symposium is designed to enhance the scholarly environment for graduate students and highlight the innovative and scholarship being done by Southern Miss graduate students.
COA students who are presenting include:
· Anna Millender "Preliminary Assessment of the Reproductive Biology of Two Cryptic Species of Cownose Ray in the Northern Gulf of Mexico"
· Pavel Dimens “Genomic approaches reveal the population structure of the Atlantic blackfin tuna”
· Christian Hayes “Relationships between nekton community structure and turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) complexity across the northern Gulf of Mexico"
· Emelia Marshall "Evaluating Functional Equivalence of Restored Marshes in Coastal Mississippi Using Structural and Trophic Metrics"
· Zac Lane "Intertidal HVAC: Fiddler crabs alter their burrow shape in response to varying climates"
· Evan Grimes "Effects of artificial freshwater diversion projects on wetland vegetation in the northern Gulf of Mexico "
· Caitlin Slife “Seasonal dietary shifts of Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) in Mississippi state waters”

Carpool instructions: Van # 14585 will be loading at the dorm parking lot (East Beach/Halstead campus at 7 am on Tuesday, March 24, with an eta in Hattiesburg at 8:30 am in time for poster set up. The van departs following the awards lunch which starts at 12:30pm. Contact Christian Hayes Christian.hayes@usm.edu or phone at 937-705-5364 to ride in the van.

Mississippi Academy of Sciences (MAS)
annual meeting

The MAS met in Biloxi February 20-21 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention Center for its annual conference. GCRL associated researchers who presented at this conference were:

* Rachel Moseley and Rachel Mugge "Marine microbiome research of deep gulf benthic habitats"
* Kelly Darnell "Seagrass distribution and condition at Cat Island, Mississippi"
