"Affirmations"
Rev. Denis Letourneau Paul and DRE Lee Cowan
June 3, 2022
There’s an old joke that if you ask 20 UU’s any question, you’ll get 24 different answers. We may not agree on answers, but we sure love to ask questions. Asking questions is arguably exactly the thing that makes us UU. So this Sunday, we’ll be welcoming a few youngsters among us into the more grown up part of our services by allowing them to ask questions that we leaders of the congregation will do our best to answer. Get ready for some tough questions!
As we celebrate these young minds, we will also honor a graduating senior in a bridging ceremony.
And it’s flower communion, so don’t forget to bring a flower (or more!) to share in this time-honored tradition!

Questions and Bridging!
We have another special service this Sunday. We will be honoring our 9 yr olds: Tusz Ruedakurto, Maisey Grant, Asa Collins and Sylvan RohmannFox.
Then we will honor our graduating senior, Elise Mutschler with a bridging ceremony.
Woven throughout the service will be a beautiful flower communion.
If anyone would like to bring snacks or treats to share after the service, please do! We will set up a table out front, as we did on Easter.

SHARE THE PLATE SUNDAY
Half of the plate and designated collections received by check or online
the first week of each month are shared with a worthy local nonprofit.
June's recipient of Share the Plate is Amenity Aid. Their mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations by creating access to essential hygiene products. Working with nonprofits, they distribute hygiene products to their network of direct service agencies that assist vulnerable populations across all of Rhode Island.

Have you ever done something that makes no sense logically, but makes sense in your own brain? That has just happened for me.
You see, I love fundraising auctions when they focus on events and experiences, rather than stuff. Who needs more stuff, right? And in congregations like ours, everyone is always hungry for more opportunities to connect with each other, especially when food is involved. I love cooking for groups, so I relish the opportunity to host an event or two.
I am also keenly aware that these fundraisers often unwittingly exclude folks who can’t afford to spend big bucks on fancy dinners, especially when they have kids. So, I came up with a kooky plan. I’ll make two offerings, one at my home that will (hopefully) fetch the big bucks from a smaller group of people, and a family-friendly, more affordable one at UUCSC.
Here’s the part that makes no sense: in my mind, the expensive event is underwriting the affordable one. It makes no sense because I’m actually paying for both! But I figure the two events combined could bring in an amount that makes all the work worthwhile.
My dear husband and I this September will be hosting a dinner on the porch of our home, which we are calling “Bistro sur la Terrasse,” a French meal with wine and mocktails, appetizers and rack of lamb. It might be a bit different from the kind of meal you think about as “French,” not quite so weighed down in heavy, buttery, creamy sauces, but still French and packed with fresh produce.
Lee and I will also be hosting in the winter an indoor family carnival which we are calling “Calamari Games,” inspired by the popularity of Korean pop culture. We’ll play Korean and America children’s games, and serve Korean and American food and drinks. This alcohol-free event will be open to all ages, and everyone will have the chance to compete in teams for a fabulous prize!
Our hope is that if you’re interested in “Calamari Games,” but have the budget to spend more, you’ll wait until the end of the auction to bid, so that others with smaller budgets have first dibs, and can feel involved in the whole auction. If you don’t have the budget to be a high bidder, please sign up early for “Calamari Games,” and know that everyone is welcome, and your contributions and presence are always appreciated.
I can’t wait to see who shows up for both events. Even more, I can’t wait to see the efforts of Betsy and Trish pay off for the congregation’s bottom line, as we all take this opportunity to have fun together.
Thank you all for your generosity!
In Peace,
Rev Denis

Hymn for the Hurting

Everything hurts,
Our hearts shadowed and strange,
Minds made muddied and mute.
We carry tragedy, terrifying and true.
And yet none of it is new;
We knew it as home,
As horror,
As heritage.
Even our children
Cannot be children,
Cannot be.
Everything hurts.
It’s a hard time to be alive,
And even harder to stay that way.
We’re burdened to live out these days,
While at the same time, blessed to outlive them.
This alarm is how we know
We must be altered —
That we must differ or die,
That we must triumph or try.
Thus while hate cannot be terminated,
It can be transformed
Into a love that lets us live.
May we not just grieve, but give:
May we not just ache, but act;
May our signed right to bear arms
Never blind our sight from shared harm;
May we choose our children over chaos.
May another innocent never be lost.
Maybe everything hurts,
Our hearts shadowed & strange.
But only when everything hurts
May everything change.
