the sum of it all math news
January 2020
"What Could Be?"
These three words define what noted educational scholar and philosopher Maxine Greene felt the purpose of education is, and what Ilana Horn has challenged us in her recent blog post to focus on in this new year. But “what could be” also serves as a wonderful opening to the world of mathematical curiosities. Check out this tweet from Christopher Danielson .

Each of these is a cross section from a different solid. What might each solid shape be? It’s a great example of a what could be prompt.

In honor of starting the new year right, send in your thoughts of what each solid shape could be by Jan. 31 to be entered in a drawing to win your choice of one of three books. And congratulations to Kimberly Guillen from Carlsbad Unified School District, the winner of the Which One Doesn’t Belon g contest in our November newsletter

San Diego Math Leaders Summit
Join math leaders from across the county in a day of networking and learning. Dive into supporting all students and learn what is working in districts throughout the county. Choose two breakout sessions that will push your thinking, and leave with new connections across the county and avenues to continue learning throughout the year. Breakout sessions include: supporting students with disabilities, supporting emergent bilinguals, new interim assessments, computer science connections, and family and community involvement. Registration is free, but space is limited for the Feb. 27 event.
Greater San Diego Math Council Conference
A leap year special event featuring Jo Boaler , Diana Ceja , Erica Heinzman , Robert Kaplinsky , Christina Lincoln-Moore , Dan Meyer , Chris Shore , and Andrew Stadel , plus many San Diego County educators. Learn more about the Feb. 29 conference for all who teach and support mathematics.
Productive Struggle for All (TK-12)
How do we ensure that students with disabilities have access to grade-level mathematics? Discover the connections between Universal Design for Learning and the Standards for Mathematical Practices to leverage learning for each and every student. We will dive into the role of collaboration and grouping in supporting all students, ways to transform individualized education programs, and strategies and tools to support all students in building mathematical understanding. Designed for all educators who support students with disabilities in mathematics.

Additional Date! Due to high demand, we have opened a second opportunity. Registration is open for the March 4 event .
This two-day workshop will examine young children's counting and spatial reasoning, and explore instructional activities that provide opportunities for teachers to learn about and respond to their students' mathematical ideas. It will be led by Nick Johnson from San Diego State University.
Unlocking Mathematical Reasoning with Estimation (grades 3-8)
Math curriculum often prevents students from having strong number sense and mathematical reasoning. Andrew Stade l has designed a workshop for math teachers that combines estimation tasks with a framework of tools and strategies that will provide all students the access to stronger number sense and mathematical reasoning. Registration is open for the March 21 event.
