College of Social Sciences and Professional Studies Update
Peggy James, Dean
With summer coming close to an end, we cant help but reflect how extraordinarily busy our college was this past summer. Our college welcomed 115 students to participate in our Uncovering Alternative History summer program. Our four week course engaged students in learning about the Hispanic American Narrative in the US and this included place-based experiential learning. 34% of our undergraduate students identified as Mexican American. We travelled across the US to El Paso Texas and even visited beautiful White Sands National Park in New Mexico.
Our summer program provided 273 Undergraduate credits, 144 Graduate credits which saved them a total of $145,062.63 in tuition!
- This fall we will be expanding our Teacher Education School-based Teaching Academy of Racine (STAR) program to include not only Special Education Licensure but our new Bilingual/Bicultural License in Racine Unified.
- A new Geography/Anthropology Applied Archeology Certificate is now available.
-
We offered not one but TWO summer field courses!
ANTH-491/300 led by Professor Bob Sasso, the course prepared students to practice modern field and laboratory archeology in approaches to discover, explore, recover, catalogue and analyze archeological contexts, deposits, and materials.
ANTH/CRMJ 490 – Led by Dr. Janamarie Truesdell, focusing on forensic archeology and anthropology as well as instructive for those more familiar with evidence collection. Students were introduced to standards and practical applications in the search, recovery and analysis of clandestine burials in a forensic context. She collaborated with agencies such as the Racine Sheriff’s Department, Kenosha Police Department, Waukesha Police Department, Canine SOS, Professor Bob Sasso and Dan Joyce from the Kenosha Public Museum.
Our college is delighted to announce the endowment of our scholarship “Sueños Hechos Realidad” “Dreams Come True”. A special THANK YOU to all our donors!
Lastly, we invite you to attend the Hispanic Heritage Month kick-off Celebration Noche de Fiesta on Wednesday September 15th at 4 PM in the Terrace outside Brickstone. Join us for our leadership awards announcement, food, crafts and a wonderful performance sponsored by Campus organization Latinos Unidos.

Fall Protocols and Vaccination Information
Fall 2021 Semester is Almost Here!
As we begin the fall 2021 semester, we continue to monitor the evolving trends with COVID-19 and adapt our health protocols to protect the health and safety of our learning community. We plan to have the majority of classes held in person this fall, maintaining social distancing at the recommended three-feet in all classrooms and on campus, so more than ever we greatly appreciate your cooperation, support, and patience in doing your part to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Here are the most up to date health protocols:
-
Vaccines are highly encouraged. Employees can make an appointment for vaccines at the Student Health and Counseling Center by calling 595-2366, or you can find a vaccine clinic near you by visiting www.vaccines.gov. We are currently working with our public health partners to hopefully offer a vaccine clinic on campus during the first week of classes. The University and UW System are offering incentives for those students, faculty, and staff who share proof of vaccination. To upload your vaccination status to MyChart, please follow the instructions at: https://www.uwp.edu/RangerRecovery/vaccination-record-mychart.cfm.
- For employees who do not share proof of vaccination, you will be expected to show negative COVID-19 test results to your direct supervisor on a bi-weekly basis.
- For employees who are vaccinated and exposed to COVID-19, it is recommended that you get tested 3-5 days after exposure, but you do not need to quarantine unless you develop symptoms.
- For employees who are not vaccinated and exposed to COVID-19, you will be required to quarantine for 10 days. Employees are expected to take leave or receive approval for telecommuting.
- Masks are required indoors regardless of vaccination status.
Convocation Postponed

As a result of the uncertainty related to the delta variant, the time needed to transition back to campus, the moves into the new Student Success & Learning Commons, and the conflicts with the start of K-12 schools across the region, we are postponing Convocation until January 2022. We recognize that those of you who have worked remotely for the past year will need time to transition back to campus, so we encourage you to focus on returning to campus and/or moving to new offices; reengaging with colleagues face to face in your respective departments; and getting ready for the return of students to campus.
We appreciate everyone’s patience, support, and dedication as we continue to navigate through the challenges presented by COVID-19. Your commitment to delivering our mission and your engagement with our students positioned us to celebrate the largest graduating classes in UW-Parkside’s history in May 2021 and May 2020. Thank you for all of the little and big things you did to make an impact on student success and to transform the lives of our students!

Bold Leaders - APPLICATION IS OPEN!
|
We are accepting applications for the 2021-22 school year for The Bold Leaders – Women Leaders’ Leadership Program at UW-Parkside. This group aims to inspire and empower women to engage in purposeful personal and professional development.
Participants will learn to lead change with more conviction and confidence while working to improve our learning environment and the communities we serve. Participants will increase self-knowledge about their own values and vision, as well as enhance their capabilities as a leader, manager, and team contributor. During the year-long program, organized into three terms, participants will examine the opportunities, challenges, trade-offs, and dynamics experienced by women in the workplace, as well as reflect on and practice effective individual behaviors.
In addition, participants will get to know colleagues from across the university as they build leadership skills that will serve them well in any position by engaging in the following activities: book studies, roundtable discussions with university leaders; leadership workshops; discussions about current issues in leadership; mentor experiences; shadowing opportunities; and participation in a team project to benefit the university.
If you want to join the group, please email Robyn Elliott at elliottr@uwp.edu with the title BOLD LEADERS 2021-22 by Friday, September 10.
