March 2020   Vestry Highlights

The Christ Church Vestry met on March 9th from 7-9PM in the 470 Maple Library.

Discussed precautions in light of the Corona Virus/COVID 19.  In the interest of caution, we have made a few changes to our services to mitigate the spreading of germs for the next few weeks:
  • For the Peace, we will refrain from shaking hands, hugging or fist bumps and encourage parishioners to share their Peace with a wave or offer a "peace sign".
  • During Holy Communion for the next few weeks, we will refrain from using the common cup.
  • We will stand at the rail as opposed to kneeling to mitigate transferring germs to the hand rail.
  • Church staff will undertake deep cleaning of the church and wipe down high traffic areas more frequently.
Celebrated the First Friday potluck and First Friday Fave for our youth.

Reviewed progress of Invite, Welcome, Connect activities.

Updated on the progress of the Communication Team to upgrade the church  database and plan for additional communications activities.

Received an update on the search for a new Associate Rector. Two candidates will visit the church in the next month for more extensive interviews.

The Organization Committee delivered an update on the organizational review with staff interviews happening this week.

Prayed for the health and welfare of parishioners and their families.

If you have questions or comments or would like to become more involved, please ask a friendly Vestry Member or email [email protected].  The next CCW Vestry meeting is on April 13, 2020.
I Will, with God's Help: A Peace & Justice Event - Monday, March 16-7:00PM

The last call-and-response of the Baptismal Covenant is when the Celebrant asks the congregation, "Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?" We respond, "I will, with God's help." Our newly formed Peace & Justice Committee is on a journey to seek ways to live out this ask from our faith. Given the complexities of today's world and our own lives, we will work to discover together how we are individually called to strive for peace and justice in ways that grow our faith.

Join fellow parishioners on March 16 at 7:00PM to hear author Robin DiAngelo speak about her current book White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism. This is a free FAN (Family Awareness Network) event held at the Evanston Township High School Auditorium, 1600 Dodge Ave., Evanston. We will gather immediately following the talk at the home of Eric Hillerbrand & Jenny Smith, 634 Prairie Ave., Wilmette for wine and discussion. Even if you haven't read the book, come. This will be akin to a verbal Cliff/Spark notes on the book.

On Sunday, April 19 we will gather for supper and a discussion of the book by Isabel Wilkerson entitled The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration. Details to follow.
Women's Bible Study

For Lent, the Women's Bible Study is reading non-canonical texts together. Using The New New Testament, we are reading The Gospel of Mary, The Acts of Paul and Thecla, The Thunder: Perfect Mind, and The Odes of Solomon. (Here is a link to a video about The New New Testament and non-canonical texts.) We'd love for you to join us! We meet in the Library of the Parish House at 470 Maple every Thursday from 9:30 to 11AM. We will NOT meet on March 26 during Spring Break. Let Megan know if you would like to be on our email list or have any questions.
Understanding & Analyzing Systemic Racism - March 26-28

What exactly is racism, and how does it operate in our society? Please consider attending this in-depth 2.5 day workshop offered in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese. The workshop is called "Understanding and Analyzing Systemic Racism", and it runs March 26-28 (Thurs. evening through Saturday afternoon), down in Hyde Park. A core group of our parishioners have attended and Christopher attended the most recent session in January. It would be great if we could gather some parishioners to attend together in March. This experience offers a history-based view of how racism is baked into the fiber of America. If you'd like to be a part of a team going from Christ Church, register on the crossroadsantiracism.org website. Follow the prompts for "workshops."

Note that attendance is required at all 3 days of the workshop. Please email Charlotte McGee for more information. We also invite you to engage Christopher about his experience in January.
