Being academically proficient is important in graduate and medical school, but there are other skills that are just as important, and are not always considered. Soft Skills relate to “how we work,” and are also important to master. Soft skills can include interpersonal skills, communication skills, listening skills, time management, empathy, and many others. In order to be successful in school and beyond, the following soft skills should be considered:
|
|
Collaborate effectively with others.
In the classroom and clinical setting, there will be people with different experience levels and opinions. It’s important to be able to consider different viewpoints, but also to find ways to defend your opinion in a respectful way. In medicine, giving quality care to patients is vital, and it’s also important to realize that each member of the care team has something to offer. There will be colleagues you don’t necessarily get along with on a personal level, but it’s crucial to set aside those differences in order to give the patient the best care possible.
Understand your knowledge limitations.
In medicine, there is so much to know and remember, and it shows a level of maturity when you can acknowledge when you don’t know the answer. Seeking the help of a trusted colleague or faculty member helps you cultivate relationships and increases your knowledge in both the clinical and academic settings.
Don’t equate self-esteem with academic and career accomplishments.
There will be times when you don’t do as well on an exam or in the clinical setting, but those shortfalls shouldn’t be tied to your self-esteem. It’s important to remember that your personal worth isn’t dependent upon success and sometimes important lessons are learned when things don’t go as planned.
Establish effective communication lines.
In clinical settings, it’s especially important to ensure members of the care team as well as patients are able to understand what is being communicated to them. Sometimes it might be necessary to ask yourself if what is being conveyed is understood by the other party. At times, it might be helpful to ask the person you are speaking to if they have any questions. Effective communication can be key in providing a positive outcome for the patient.
Remember, soft skills can help you to not only become a better physician, but by learning such skills like empathy, effective communication, and collaboration, you can become a better person.

These sessions are great for building confidence even for those who are not going into academic medicine. As future physicians, you'll be teachers of colleagues in other specialties, other health professionals and undoubtedly of patients.
