Community Spotlight: Meridian Anti-Drug Coalition Stickering Event
|
The Meridian Anti-Drug Coalition (MADC) and the Renaissance High School National Honor Society joined forces to hold a "Stickering" event as part of ODP and the Idaho State Liquor Division's statewide "Think Twice or Pay the Price" sticker shock campaign. The campaign uses stickers placed on liquor store bags to remind adults of the consequences for providing alcohol to minors.
Renaissance High School hosted the event—organized by MADC Executive Board members—on November 7th. In addition to the 60 National Honor Society Youth volunteers, attendees included MADC members, local liquor store managers, and even a Meridian City Council member who shared inspiring words to kick off the event.
Youth placed 7,000 "Think Twice" stickers on liquor store bags in 40 minutes! They enjoyed snacks, a curated playlist, and three contests held throughout the "stickering" where winners received donated gift cards. They received t-shirts sponsored by ISLD and wore them during the event.
In addition to stickering, youth discussed prevention-related conversation starters, signed thank you cards for the four Meridian Liquor stores participating in the campaign, and wrote Letters to the Editor of their local paper.
Kendall Nagy, MADC Director, said,
"The coalition and our partners at Renaissance High School love participating in this event so much our Youth Sector Representative reported National Honor Society members were requesting to participate again this year before we even knew if ODP and ISLD were sponsoring the campaign! There are so many great ways you can implement this prevention strategy and collaborate with multiple partners to help educate community members about the harms of underage drinking."

Update: Governor's Opioid and Substance Use Disorder Advisory Group
|
Governor Brad Little's Opioid and Substance Use Disorder Advisory Group, established by
executive order
, convened for its third meeting Wednesday, December 11th in Caldwell.
The 22-member group is tasked with researching, evaluating, and providing recommendations on
twelve specific charges
related to opioid and substance misuse in Idaho.
The public meeting ran from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Caldwell Veterans Memorial Hall. Members received presentations from Craig PoVey, Prevention Administrator with the Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, and Drs. Alicia Carrasco and Mark Harris from the Boise VA Hospital.
Additionally, members conducted breakout sessions to further discuss potential recommendations and then several sub-committees presented recommendations to the larger group. Recommendations were made related to the following charges:
- Advancing the goals and strategies from the Idaho Opioid Misuse and Overdose Strategic Plan.
- Best practices in other states used to combat opioid misuse and substance use disorder.
- Prescribing practices including usage of the prescription monitoring program, prescription limitations, and required continuing medical education.
Recommendations that receive a simple majority vote from the advisory group will be presented to the Governor.

Naloxone Program Outcomes Report
|
|
With funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) State Opioid Response grant (SOR), through a subgrant from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, Division of Behavioral Health, the Office of Drug Policy was tasked with providing naloxone kits for first responders and other agencies to prevent and reduce opioid-related overdose deaths in Idaho. This report covers the Federal FY19 grant cycle.
Report Highlights
- Provided 1,472 naloxone kits (2 doses each) to 65 agencies
- Over 48% of reporting agencies were law enforcement, followed by substance user disorder treatment providers (15%)
- Grantees reported 46 naloxone administrations and 37 overdose reversals.
- Grantees distributed 179 naloxone doses to at-risk individuals, their friends, and family.

ICADD Prevention Award Nominations
|
ODP is now accepting nominations for the the Idaho Conference on Alcohol and Drug Dependency Prevention Award. The Prevention Award is designed to recognize an outstanding Idaho Substance Use Prevention Professional. To be considered for the award nominated individuals must be strong prevention advocates, demonstrating leadership, best practice service delivery, community involvement and their commitment to substance use prevention.
Sharlene Johnson of Kamiah received the 2019 Prevention Award. Sharlene has contributed to substance use prevention efforts in Idaho for over a decade and is an expert in prevention science, holding the Certified Prevention Specialist credential. She serves as the Executive Director of the Upriver Youth Leadership Council and a Partnerships for Success prevention coordinator in Public Health District 2.
Nominations for the 2020 award will be accepted until
January 31, 2020.
The information provided on the nomination form will be used to assess the nominee's suitability for the award. Please be thorough, yet succinct. A list of nominees, with the responses you provide, will be sent to the prevention community to vote on the final award winner.

2019 Northwest Drug Symposium
|
ODP sponsored the Northwest Alcohol Conference (NoWAC) 2019 Northwest Drug Symposium held Monday, December 9th at the Riverside Hotel in Boise.
The drug symposium is held in December of odd calendar years, while the
multi-day NoWAC conference
is held in July of even calendar years and covers a more extensive array of topics.
Over 140 law enforcement, probation/parole, school admins and others from multiple states including Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, and Oregon attended. The one day symposium covered a range of drug-related topics including e-cigarettes/vaping, drug identification and trends, youth risk-behaviors, and more.
Presenters included "Tall Cop Says Stop," and NoWAC founder, Jermaine Galloway; Molli Baker, Executive Director of the Juvenile Assessment Center in Denver, CO; and several current and former law enforcement officers.
ODP administrator Melinda Smyser delivered an opening address and reminded Idaho attendees of the grant opportunities available to continue prevention education efforts in their home communities. This included
Substance Abuse Block Grant (SABG)** primary prevention funds which support both direct services and environmental strategies designed to stop the problem before it starts.
