Greetings, Chartiers Valley Families,

I hope this letter finds you all well.

As I begin to reflect on the year 2020, many feelings and thoughts come to mind. Most of all, though, this year has cemented the pride and honor I have in being a part of the Chartiers Valley School District and community.  As we continue through the holiday season, my wish is that each of you takes a moment to reflect on the contributions you have made to CV and know how much those efforts are appreciated.

Temporary Shift to Remote Learning
Chartiers Valley had great success in opting to shift all K-12 learning to remote platforms following the Thanksgiving break.  With this, the District was able to capture 17 positive cases from entering our school buildings, thus reducing the potential spread of the virus and allowing school buildings to remain open longer than they would have otherwise.
In turn, the District will follow the same proactive measures after the winter break.  Students will learn remotely on January 5, 6, and 7.  We will resume on-campus instruction (Hybrid and Hybrid +2) on January 11, 2021.

  • December 24-31, January 1 and 4: Winter Recess; No School for Students
  • January  5, 6, and 7: Remote learning
  • January 11: In-person learning resumes

Teachers will be reviewing their remote learning expectations with students before the break. Students will be expected to follow their typical schedule and attend Google Classroom Meetings while remote. These expectations should also be posted on their Google Classroom/Schoology pages.

Moratorium on Athletics & Extracurricular Activities
As you may have heard, Governor Wolf instituted new mitigation orders on December 10.  These orders are an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout our Pennsylvania communities.  The order addresses school district extracurricular activities and places a moratorium on these activities and athletics until January 4, at 8:00 am.

Free Meals for All Students
As a reminder, families who wish to partake in the free school breakfast and lunch program should complete this form in order for the District to prepare meals accordingly. The program is open to all students, ages 18 years and younger. More information is included in the link above or on the Food Service page of the District website.

Final Thoughts for a Healthy Holiday
As our region struggles with a surge in COVID-19 positivity rates, the Chartiers Valley School District has been very fortunate thus far in regards to our limited number of cases and community spread. However, as we enter the holiday season when families are gathering, students are returning home from college, and we are all spending more time indoors, we hope that this proactive, temporary shift to remote learning will allow us to maintain in-person instruction in the long-term.

Over the break, please be mindful of travel guidelines and restrictions. Also, please continue to notify the District if and when your student has been in contact with a positive COVID-19 case and/or is symptomatic. Please remember to stay home if you or your student(s) are not feeling well, even if symptoms are mild. Students can utilize Google Classroom or Schoology to access schoolwork remotely on these days.

Thank you for your understanding, communication, and cooperation during these challenging times. Should you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your teachers, principals, or myself.  I wish you all a happy, healthy holiday and look forward to seeing you in 2021.

It’s a great day to be a Colt!

Sincerely,

Johannah M. Vanatta, Ed.D.
