INFORMATION ABOUT ALBERTA RELAUNCH FOR SENIORS: PHASE II

This document includes need-to-know information for seniors regarding phase II of the relaunch. Learn about what services are currently available, what restrictions are still in place and how to stay safe. It is recommended that vulnerable Albertans, including older Albertans, take extra precautions during this time. Precautions include washing hands frequently, wearing a mask, avoiding large crowds, shopping during seniors' shopping hours, visiting outdoors when possible and ensuring a safe physical distance of 2 metres between yourself and others.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARDS 
Canadian Mental Health Association

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Alberta Division is pleased to announce the 2020 award nominations are now open! Each year, CMHA recognizes mental health leaders, innovators and volunteers who advance the mental health of all Albertans. 

Nominate an individual or group for any one of the following awards:  
  • Nadine Stirling Memorial Award 
  • The Bettie Hewes Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service 
  • Communications Award 
  • Professional Care Award 
  • Special Service Award
  • Workplace Wellness Award 
Nominations will be accepted until August 7.  
ALBERTA CULTURE DAYS GRANT
Government of Alberta

Alberta Culture Days funding assistance is designed to support Alberta Culture Days activities, events and promotions that engage public participation and inspire future involvement.    Due to the uncertainty about public gatherings, community organizers are encouraged to consider hosting Alberta Culture Days online as a way to safely reconnect with communities to celebrate arts and culture.

SCREENING DEVELOPMENT GRANT
Volunteer Alberta

Applications for the Screening Development Grants (SDG) are now open for 2020! With up to $3,000, you can update or develop screening policies and practices to recruit and engage volunteers virtually and in-person.  Funding is flexible to support and suit your organization's needs. Along with funds, you'll receive education, support and a chance to connect with and learn from your peers. The deadline to apply is  July 31. 
THE CANADA STUDENT SERVICE GRANT
Government of Canada

The Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG) brings together qualified post-secondary students and recent graduates with volunteer opportunities to support Canada's response to COVID-19.  
 
An eligible placement opportunity must be with a not-for-profit organization, which includes non-profits and registered charities. Volunteer placements must:    
  • Take place in Canada.  
  • Be in support of Canada's response to COVID-19.  
  • Be a minimum of two hours/week for four weeks and run within the period from June 25 until October 31, 2020.  
  • Adhere to public health regulations.  
  • Provide a meaningful experience for student volunteers.

211 Alberta

211 has created a  report detailing   COVID-19 related Distress Line and 211 contact volumes responded to by Canadian Mental Health Association-Edmonton, beginning January 31 through June 27.
COMMUNITY SERVICE-LEARNING OPPORTUNITY
University of Alberta

The University of Alberta Community Service-Learning program is looking for organizations with opportunities for online volunteer placements for the fall and winter terms.  
 
What can they offer you? 
  • University students eager to interact with older adults and learn about your organization.
  • Up to 60 students who are learning about aging and who know best practices for communicating with/to/about older adults.
  • 20 volunteer hours per student with your organization.

VIRTUAL GYM
Center for Active Living

Many older adults are interested in activities to maintain or improve their health. Although there are several options for seniors to remain fit, individualized exercise sessions prescribed by health practitioners lead to the best results.  Virtual Gym, through the Center for Active Living, is an exercise platform for health practitioners to provide game-like exercise for older adults, with individualized configurations to match the user's capabilities.  Virtual Gym effectively connects health practitioners with older adults, particularly during this pandemic time of social distancing.

Arts on the Ave and  Kaleido  are pleased to present  Kaleido 2020 on Tour: Here Comes the Sun . This year,  Kaleido  will be a spontaneous, summer-long celebration of music, art and magic. All physically distant, all coming to you! This year's theme is to bring light and joy at a time when many of the activities we love are put on pause due to COVID-19. Festivals may never look the same again, but Kaleido 2020 is re-imagining, inventing and creating something new. The festival is  monitoring Alberta Health Service's directions closely and will follow all safety guidelines.
