TRAVEL SOCCER:
120 girls & boys in Gr. 4-8 participated on our travel teams. 40 new players joined us (1/4 from our Rec League) and we maintained our 94% player retention rate between seasons. Most players are NOW involved in winter futsal.
We're growing & sustaining

CITY-WIDE REC SOCCER:
Our Rec League, or feeder program, connecting kids as young as 4 had its largest enrollment last fall with 297 youth! This program was led and supported by 24 high school and college-aged coach-mentors! #Leadership-Through-Sports
|
|
GETTING FIT:
We tracked improved cardiovascular health/fitness levels in 82% of travel players using PACER. Also, 100% of our female travel players tested in the
Healthy Fitness Zone
(#HFZ)
for their age group and 95% improved their scores!

OPEN HOUSE:
150+ families came out on 11/3 to learn about
Essex County Youth Futsal
that's
now being run at our
Sports & Wellness Center
. It’s exciting to be part of the state's #
Futsal
movement that’s providing fun, fast-paced,
#offseason
soccer for kids!

Our newly developed, 9,000 sq. ft indoor space, or “
Lawrence Sports HUB
” at IndusPAD, has already seen significant participant and partner growth. Plus, in addition to guaranteeing our Beyond Soccer kids don’t miss out on winter programs (which unfortunately was the case last winter) it’s allowing us to connect kids as young as 4, for the first time, to Saturday futsal in partnership with the
Essex County Youth Futsal League

Because our players love soccer so much, we can ‘hook’ them into other, healthy activities, like new
Fuel-for-Performance classes
!
|
|
#Fuel-for-Performance:
As most know, Lawrence struggles with high rates of childhood obesity and because of that it’s important that our players, in addition to gaining soccer skills, learn the value of a balanced diet
.
In the past, our 6-wk cooking courses were only reaching a small percentage of players, but with our growing health and wellness partnerships, like
New Balance Foundation
and
MA Medical Society & Alliance
Charitable Foundation
, we started connecting all our travel players to seasonal, 1-day FFP classes in our
HealthKicks
kitchen. These classes, led by Health & Wellness Director,
Lindsey McArdle
, are designed to improve kids’ nutritional literacy. It incorporates partner, Boston Children’s
FitKit
messaging, which identifies low and high glycemic carbs, and to make it fun, applicable and hands-on, a pre or post game meal or snack is always made. Lindsey also hosted a special holiday class where she taught players how to make a healthy apple dish (
recipe here
)! We’re getting healthier, through
#teamwork!

|
A group of parents from both our rec and travel teams have been gathering for 6 weeks in our teaching kitchen for cooking classes with partner
Cooking Matters
. This program has been a huge hit with families (kids too, who get to play games with coach mentors in our computer lab during "class time"). The curriculum includes both a nutrition & culinary lesson, as well as hands on cooking & tasting. Parents, in Week 5, benefited from a grocery store tour and challenge. Plus every week parents take home
the class-recipe ingredients to repeat it at home! #WinWin

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Former Travel Player, Sydney Goodwin
|
Our first female collegiate soccer player, Sydney G., who played on our first Gr. 6 girls’ team in 2012 is competing for
Elms College
in Chicopee. After graduating from
GLTS
with honors and many athletic accolades, she earned Elms College-Rookie of the Year recognition as a freshman in 2018. Sydney, who also worked the
Sports Leadership Academy
last summer, had another banner season last fall. Other Beyond Soccer females are playing intramural & club sports in college, but Sydney is our first, recruited female travel player.
Although this isn't our principal motivation, it’s an awesome byproduct.

Mass Youth Soccer Association
'Planting A Seed'
Assignment
|
|
Despite doing a lot to introduce new kids to soccer, we're taking the MYSA "
planting a seed
" assignment very seriously (balls were distributed to members, including Steph McArdle, to gift to youth who haven't played before). That challenge prompted Steph & her team to think about what's being done in the community for youth with special needs around soccer. Well, not enough! This spring, in partnership with the
YMCA,
Lawrence Youth Soccer should have a first-ever opportunity for kids who haven't played before through
TOPSoccer
.
Stay tuned!

We're BACK...in the Schools!
|
At one point we were reaching 1,300 kids during their school day. That effort was taking away from our after-school efforts. We took a break to
regroup & refocus
and we're back, one year later, but staying more mission driven and program focused. Coach Mentors Adam & Will lead these efforts for Guilmette & Lahey students at the
Boys & Girls Club,
three (3) days/week. It’s a great sport and health opportunity, but its leadership focused too, providing important youth jobs. We love seeing kids moving and playing during their school day and we love spaces like the B&G Club
|
|
(above) that allow that to happen
. We've also recruited a handful of youth to join our after-school travel soccer & futsal programs!
