Employee Wellness Act Postponed
|
|
Due to the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus (COVID 19), Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca has postponed enactment of the Employee Wellness Act, also known as the paid time off ordinance, until Oct. 1, 2020. The ordinance, approved by the County Commission in 2019, was originally scheduled to take effect on July 1.

Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca is extending her order suspending the single-use plastic bag ban until she rescinds the order. The original order, in late March, eased restrictions for 60 days.
The order came via the Bernalillo County emergency management ordinance approved by the County Commission at its March 10
emergency meeting giving the county manager authority to make decisions regarding county operations during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Free Tech Tutoring for Seniors
Free Coaching to Help Seniors Close the Digital Divide, Stay Connected During COVID-19
|

The Bernalillo County Office of Senior and Social Services is engaging the New Mexico startup Teeniors to help support local senior citizens as they adapt to the digital world during COVID-19.
Up to 30 one-on-one coaching sessions with a live, experienced tutor are available over phone and video calls for Bernalillo County seniors, age 55 and older.
Teeniors will provide virtual tutoring for any senior to receive help on any tech support question they have, from how to text, video call and shop online, to learning new programs like PowerPoint, Zoom and social media.
Teeniors are tech-savvy teens and young adults who help senior citizens, or any-aged person, learn technology through one-on-one, personalized coaching. Teeniors has provided one-on-one tutoring to almost 3,000 seniors in New Mexico, and provided part-time jobs to over 50 teens and young adults. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Teeniors has pivoted from in-person coaching to 100% virtual coaching.

BernCo Public Art - Call for Artists
|
|
The Bernalillo County Arts Board is seeking qualified artists and artist teams interested in creating public art for the Tiny Home Village, now under construction in southeast Albuquerque.
The artwork will be located in the visitor parking area of the facility. Artists are encouraged to include a community outreach process in the design and implementation of the art. The established budget is $43,000. The project will be participatory and will engage the surrounding community and village residents.

The Bernalillo County Public Art program is announcing a call for artists for an indoor mural in the new County Commission chambers at Alvarado Square.
The Alvarado Square chambers mural will be located on the south-facing wall outside of the County Commission chambers at the new county headquarters. The mural will be visible to the public both from inside the building and outside from Silver Avenue through glass windows.
The mural will also be used in the creation of an acrylic/glass art element behind the concierge desk, to form a screen for the building’s glass elevators.

BernCo Opens Rio Grande Pool and Fitness Centers for Limited Use

|
Bernalillo County Parks, Recreation and Open Space is slowly re-opening some of its facilities that closed in March due to coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic restrictions.
All Bernalillo County Parks, Recreation and Open Space facilities, such as ballfields, courts, rodeo arenas, swimming pools, playgrounds, open space buildings, and community centers remain closed until further notice for any organized activity, including traditional summer camp, sports team practices and games, little leagues, or rodeos, and special events at county facilities.
BernCo Parks, Recreation and Open Space facility availabilities are limited and as follows:
OPEN:
Rio Grande Pool – Open 6 a.m. – 3 p.m. by reservation only
- Limited swimmers in facility – 4 lanes open, 4 lanes closed as separation between swimmers
- No spectators
- Social distancing will be observed
- Lap swim only
- No open recreational swim
Community Centers – Closed (Except for fitness centers)
- Fitness centers are open 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. by reservation only
- Virtual summer camp via Facebook and YouTube
- Special events are not being scheduled but requests for late summer or fall events are being reviewed on a case-by-case basis and must meet Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s public health order
- Ed Chismar mobile recreation unit making appearances
Summer lunch grab-n-go continues Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
CLOSED AND CANCELLED:
- ALL outdoor swimming pools and splash pads
- Community centers
- Summer sports leagues (Youth basketball and adult softball)
- Play areas in county parks
- All ballfields and athletic facilities (Limited use for organizations with approved user agreements in place)
- Rodeo and equestrian arenas
- Jimmy Nieto Softball Tournament
- Gutierrez/Hubbell House Museum
- Bachechi environmental building and bathrooms
Bernalillo County management is in talks regarding after school programming as kids head back to class in mid-August. No determinations have been made at this time.

BernCo Announces New Convenient MDC Commissary Deposit Services
July 1, 2020– Bernalillo County Commissioners recently approved a new agreement with the Keefe Commissary Group for the commissary and deposit services for the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Family and friends now have a new, more convenient way to make deposits into inmate’s accounts by going to walk-in retailers where they already shop.
They can register at

get a barcode and make a cash deposit at locations including Dollar General, Family Dollar, CVS, and 7-Eleven stores.

July 1, 2020 - The Bernalillo County Housing Department is receiving a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant from the State of New Mexico to rehabilitate 75 of its multifamily units.
The units are known as El Centro and Seybold Village and are designated for disabled and senior residents in the South Valley. The units are over 35 years old and will receive many renovations, including electrical, flooring, bathroom and other upgrades.
Bernalillo County last received the community development grant in 2003. The funds went unused and were returned to the state. The last grant awarded for housing rehabilitation went to the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority in 2005

July 1, 2020 - Property owners who fail to keep their properties free of weeds and trash, or have substandard buildings may have the county cleaning up and billing the owners for the work.
Bernalillo County commissioners approved the nuisance abatement ordinance on Tuesday which now gives the Bernalillo County Planning and Development Services Department the authority, under the county’s statutory and home rule authority, to abate nuisances in the unincorporated areas of the county, outside the city limits.
June 30, 2020 - Bernalillo County commissioners have voted to appropriate $1 million in funding for the purchase, support services, subscriptions, and infrastructure for body-worn cameras for the Sheriff’s Department.

Bernalillo County commissioners approved the issuance of $7.5 million in project revenue bonds for the Albuquerque Housing Authority to be used for The Commons at Martineztown in central Albuquerque.
The tax-exempt bonds will fund the renovation of 96 existing affordable housing units in The Commons at Martineztown to house low-income senior residents and residents with disabilities.

Bernalillo County Commissioners approved the issuance of up to $9 million in taxable industrial revenue bonds for Santa Fe-based New Mexico Fresh Foods to locate in an existing northern county warehouse.
