General Assembly Has Adjourned

The 224th General Assembly of the PC(USA) - perhaps the first national meeting of a Christian denomination held exclusively online - has adjourned, having addressed all the "critical items of business" that was asked of them. This was an unusual GA in that there was only one committee (Business Referral), and thus the GA met in plenary sessions on only three days. Commissioners elected new co-moderators of the GA: Ruling Elder Elona Street-Stewart (a Synod executive from Lakes and Prairies) and the Rev. Gregory Bentley (pastor, Fellowship PC, Huntsville, Alabama). They led the subsequent meetings effectively in spite of the virtual setting which caused some lag time - but we experienced only one glitch that was resolved in less-than three minutes by the technical crew! (We hope that at least one of the new co-moderators can ZOOM-in with us at our August 15, 2020 Presbytery meeting.) We are grateful for the service of our GA Commissioners and Young Adult Advisory Delegate:  Rev. Kaye Barrow-Ziglar, YAAD Nolan Chilton, Ruling Elder Jack Hartle, Ruling Elder Beth Hooten, Ruling Elder Cindy Ingle, Rev. Kim Priddy, and Rev. Paul Sink. As is our custom, the Presbytery will hear a brief report at our August 15, 2020 Presbytery meeting from Paul Sink - and a more thorough report from the commissioners/YAAD in November 2020.
The 224th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA)

In these unprecedented times, the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) gathered virtually over three days last. As noted above, nearly all of the business slated to come before the assembly was tabled until the 2022 gathering. But business as attended as necessary. For a full overview of what happened, you can visit the official assembly web page:

For additional information, consider this informative article from the Presbyterian Outlook:

Following the assembly, there has been concerns raised about a lack of action or statements coming from the assembly regarding race relations - especially concerning the treatment of black women and girls in our society. Many of our former moderators and vice-moderators from previous assemblies issued a statement addressing those concerns. You can read their statement here:

Salem Presbytery Friends,

Last week's edition of Salem Matters contained a link for the contents inventory of the Presbytery office. There will be an updated list coming very soon. Thanks for all who have claimed items so far! I do need some assistance in staffing the pick-up dates of July 3, 10-3 and July 11, 10-2. Please let me know if you are able to assist me either of those days.
Additionally, I could use a bit of help early this Friday morning (8:30 or 9ish) setting out other misc office supplies and non-furniture items so that they are available to be picked through during the pick-up times.

Peace,
Paul Sink

The attached article gives us all an important update on how our Pennies for Hunger funds are being utilized for feeding programs in the Congo.

WE REALIZE THE COLLECTING OUR PENNIES FOR HUNGER OFFERINGS DURING THIS TIME OF VIRTUAL WORSHIP IS DIFFICULT. Let us all think creatively about how these much-needed offerings can continue to be received.
