Join the Parish Choir for a service of Lessons and Carols for the Season of Epiphany. More ancient than the celebration of Christmas, the early church highlighted three manifestations -- or epiphanies -- of Jesus' life and early ministry: the visit by the Magi, the revelation that he was God's beloved child at his baptism in the Jordan, and his first miracle at the wedding feast at Cana. Explore these stories through music and readings for the season of Epiphany.

Parishioner Carolyn Crouch will lead the workshop as preparation for beginners and as a refresher for those who are already on the roster for readers. To be a reader at St John's is an important ministry and a privilege. Please attend training even if you are a seasoned veteran

to Receive Pathways Through Lent

We invite you to share your thoughts on the season of Lent by writing a brief reflection for our online daily devotional. Entries may be written individually or as a group (e.g. on behalf of a committee or a family) and need be about 250 words long. Your reflection can be inspired by the appointed scripture verse of the day (which we will share when we confirm your assigned date) or some other Lenten or spiritual topic.
Submissions are due by Friday, February 21,
so we can launch the devotional on Ash Wednesday, February 26.

As we welcome 2020, we have exciting ministry awaiting us at St. John's. Our annual stewardship giving provides much of the financial support that make all of our ministries possible, and the information provided by pledges allows our church leaders to budget with confidence. A nonprofit leader of note has described charitable giving as a kind of alchemy, a magical transformation of the giver's resources into a public expression of their values. We have this good fortune each year -- each week! -- to see our gifts to St. John's turn into beautiful music, inspirational sermons, meaningful outreach, Christian education, and much more.

Envelopes may be picked up from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Envelopes that have not been picked up by February 3rd will be mailed!

The group will not meet on January 26 and February 2, so that everyone can attend the presentation of vestry candidates and the annual meeting of the congregation. All are welcome. The 2020 Spring Adult Inquirers' Class

If you would like to be baptized, confirmed, or received into membership in the Episcopal Church at St. John's, we invite you to join the 2020 Spring Adult Inquirers' Class. The two-day class will meet on two Saturdays, March 14 and March 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. both days. The Rev. Rob Fisher, Rector of St. John's, will lead the sessions. Anyone -- newcomer or longtime parishioner -- interested in learning more about our Christian faith and life, the Episcopal tradition, and the ministry of St. John's Church, is encouraged to attend.

As part of our faith in the workplace outreach, the Rev. Will Morris would like to gauge interest in joining a study group/book club to discuss work-related issues and dilemmas. Would you like to get together for one hour most months to discuss a chapter in Will's book, Where is God at Work?, and share with others your views on the issues as you find them (or found them; or imagine them) in any workplace with which you are familiar? The subjects that Will covers range from your boss to retirement; from what happens if you have to answer a difficult email to what happens if you are asked to lie; from the relevance of the bible to your work (e.g., the parable of the talents) to the theological implications of open plan and hot desking!
To be very clear this is open to all, wherever you work, if you no longer work, of if you have never worked. All that is required is an interest in where God might be in the workplace.

During Lent, we will be employing an early church practice called "Agape dinners" to provide members of St. John's with an opportunity to gather in a member's home, share a meal together, and reflect on the significance of Lent in their lives. We will be organizing the dinners by neighborhood so that members who live near each other can get to know each other better. If you are interested in participating, please

The Care of Creation interest group will gather on Sunday, February 23 at 12:30 p.m. to make plans for this spring and summer. All are welcome. Please grab lunch and join us on the 3rd floor, Conference Room.
The Impending Boom in Plastics
We spent a number of weeks last year discussing the danger of plastics in their production, use, and disposal. We emphasized our personal responsibilities for alleviating the problem. Unfortunately, the problem is likely to grow bigger in the near future. Major oil companies, facing the prospect of reduced demand for their products, are ramping up their plastics output. A host of new petrochemical plants, using ethane feedstock supplied by the fracking boom, are coming on line ... in operation, under construction, or awaiting regulatory approval. Since 2010, companies have invested more than $200 billion in 333 plastic and other chemical projects. As individuals, we may have little leverage to affect that, but we can ask: what have we in our own households done to minimize our personal plastic waste?

Thinking About Science and Faith
|
Would you be interested in exploring the intersections of modern science and theology during Lent next year? A few parishioners are exploring ideas for a study group, possibly to take place later in March. If you'd like to be part of this, whether as a participant or planner, please be in touch with Joanne Hutton.

The Parish Choir, a dedicated corps of volunteer musicians who provide musical leadership for Sunday morning services, welcomes new members. Midweek rehearsals are most Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with a light supper of sandwiches provided at 6:30 p.m. There is a straightforward voice trial for admission, but the main qualification is your interest in serving St. John's in its music program.

Volunteer at Cardozo Education
Campus

Communities in Schools, which is supported by St. Johns Church, is looking for volunteers at Cardozo this January.
The school has made an
urgent
request for tutors during January. Tutoring will take place after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. No special training is needed. Tutors will be working with vulnerable students who are in danger of failing the term. Volunteers are welcome at one, some, or all sessions as they are able.
