Remembering Merita Haxhaj-Kelmendi

On June 14, 2019, we lost a dear friend, loving wife, amazing mother, NKBA Manhattan colleague & an incredible person,  Merita Haxhaj-Kelmendi .

                                           

Merita was an integral part of the Gurri Design & Remodel company from its beginning days to the latest marketing of the company. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Merita was born in Plave, Montenegro, and resided in Prishtina, Kosovo. In 1993 she moved to Brooklyn, NY, met her future husband Sami Kelmendi and raised three beautiful children. Eventually the Gurri company moved to Manhattan with an office in the A&D building on East 58th Street.

                                                                     

At 49-years-old, Marita left us and this world on June 14, at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan from complications of stomach cancer.

Fasten your seat belts for a fast-paced fall season!

We hope you enjoyed the summer break and are ready to back back into the education groove with our chapter. Up next on September 19 and 20 are two full days of learning available with NKBA partner, the Living In Place Institute, serving up 16 CEUs and a CLIPP certification to enhance your knowledge base and business. The classes will be located at the TOTO showroom in NYC’s Flatiron District, and there are still some seats available. Please contact [email protected] to reserve your space.

Come on over to the Dacor Kitchen Theatre in the A&D Building on the 19th after the class and join us for refreshments at our chapter meeting featuring a CEU discussing luxury clients.

CEDIA Expo is also happening in September, and our industries continue to cross pollinate, sharing information, ideas and best practices for business. We will be reporting from the show floor on social media in regard to technology products and trends that are having a major impact on our business.

Be sure to follow along with @thenkba @dawndelucaondesign,  @tonisabstyle and @cediaexpo for reports from the show floor. We also are looking forward to reports from Maison Objet happening this month in Paris. The first NKBA Global Connect Summit will be happening in the UK in early October.

TechCollider at the Design + Connection Pavilion 

As the industry leader in connecting the design and technology communities, CEDIA Expo is excited to debut a new, informal lounge speaker series at September’s conference in Denver, Colorado. Taking place on Sept. 13 within the Design + Connect Pavilion (booth #1960) on the CEDIA Expo show floor, Tech Collider at the Design + Connect Pavilion aims to educate designers, architects, integrators, and technologists on ways to navigate a successful and impactful relationship.

1:00 - 2:00pm -- Tech Collider: Healthy Home Automation 

Designer Barbara Barton – a Certified Living in Place Professional, and architect Doug Walter (AIA) take the floor at the Design + Connect Pavilion to talk through their experience working together to design and build today’s healthy home. Running the gamut from ground breaking to key turning, Healthy Home Automation will cover aspects of a home and how they affect someone psychologically, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Barbara and Doug’s talk takes place at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 13.

2:00 - 3:00pm – Tech Collider: Building Business between Designers and Integrators 

KBB’s Erinn Locke and CE Pro’s Jason Knott are joined by designer Dawn DeLuca and integrator Shalom Illouz to talk through how designers and integrators can come together, build a working relationship, and deliver exceptional results to their clients. Topics of discussion include how to speak each other’s “language”, what products make sense for both parties, and how to handle the sales process (read: money!). Building Business between Designers and Integrators takes place at 2pm on Sept. 13. 

Women in Consumer Technology: “Technology + Design-Build Teams = Winning!”

CEDIA Expo is once again welcoming Women in Consumer Technology to its September conference for “Technology + Design-Build Teams = Winning!” , a special TechTalk on the intersection of modern technology and design. The Women in Consumer Technology-sponsored TechTalk will be moderated by Danielle Karr , architect and designer program manager for Control4 , this 50-minute panel conversation will include Stace McGee, principal at Environmental Dynamics, Inc.; Sara Gutterman, co-founder and CEO at Green Builder Media; Joe Whitaker, CEDIA board member; Toni Sabatino , owner of Toni Sabatino Style; and Brian Pagel, senior vice president of Emerald Expositions.
