New California Updates, Regulations, and Requirements
Bay Area AQMD Statewide Grant for Replacing ICE Powered Vehicles
The Bay Area AQMD is managing a $34M statewide grant program for replacing ICE powered vehicles and equipment with zero-emission units. The grant program will be funded on a first-come, first-served basis for qualifying projects including:
  • Forklifts (with >8,000 lbs. lift capacity) at any location;
  • Airport ground support equipment; 
  • Port cargo handling equipment;
  • Repowering ferries, tugboats, and towboats; 
  • Shore power at berths that serve ocean-going vessels.

DOE Funding Technology Advancing Efforts
The DOE has announced $60M in grants to fund five technology-advancing efforts: Battery Efficiencies, Combustion Efficiencies, Lightweighting, New Mobility Systems and Transportation Analysis.

Sacramento Clean Cities Sponsors Make The News
Lion Electric Brings New Electric Buses to Twin Rivers School District
Lion Electric will be delivering 10 new Type C battery electric school buses to the Twin Rivers School District on Thursday, 12/17/20, bringing the Twin Rivers ZEV fleet to 40 buses as they build to 84 by next year. The new buses will be equipped with 168kWh battery packs providing 125 miles of range. Lion has also partnered with Raleys to donate $500 of food to DAC communities with every bus delivered.

Toyota Full Battery-Electric Car
Toyota has announced that they will be bringing their first full battery-electric car to market, likely a result of the partnership they announced last year with Subaru to jointly develop a battery-electric car. Toyota still remains committed to making hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles as their core EV strategy.

Toyota EV With Solid State Batteries
Toyota is also reporting that in Q1 next year they will be producing a prototype vehicle using solid state batteries, with much higher energy density, twice the range and the ability to fully recharge in 10 minutes. They plan on commercial production to follow relatively quickly.

Toyota Next Generation Fuel Cells
Toyota has also announced that their next generation fuel cells are powering the recently introduced 2021 Mirai sedans, and also powering the 10 recently delivered Kenworth T680 Class 8 drayage trucks in LA with 300 miles of range. The 2021 fuel cells will also be powering Toyota’s own Hino Class 8 trucks, due in pilot projects in 2021, with 372 miles of range.

City of Sacramento Fleet, Under Mark Stevens, Receives Green Fleet Award
The City of Sacramento Fleet, under Manager and Sacramento Clean Cities board member Mark Stevens, recently received a Green Fleet Award from 100 Best Fleets. This award was partially based on the City’s implementation of hybrid Ford Explorer “Pursuit Rated” patrol vehicles and their aggressive implementation of Samsara telematics that improves management efficiency and safety.

Volkswagen Fast Charging Solid State Batteries
Volkswagen claims to be introducing solid state batteries from QuantumScape, a VW-backed startup, in limited quantities beginning in 2025. QuantumScape claims to have batteries capable of 80% charge in 15 minutes, 80% capacity after 800 charge cycles, and operational at -22F.

Hyundai has an aggressive vision for the introduction of hydrogen fuel cells in transportation, powering everything from cars and heavy-duty trucks to robots and aircraft. To speed the market introduction of hydrogen, Hyundai has formed a fuel cell company, HTWO.

“Fuel Economy in Cold Weather” is a website with a wealth of information about the effects of temperature on fuel economy. Gasoline vehicle fuel economy can decrease by 15% at 20 degrees F, and EV range can be reduced by nearly 40%.

Honda Plug-In Hybrid Incentive for Fleets
Honda is offering a $500 incentive on the Plug-in Hybrid Clarity sedans for fleets, and for retail customers who work for organizations that have Employee Programs with Honda. Many government agencies, universities, school districts, utilities, medical groups, and technical companies are already set up and if an employer does not have a Program, one can be created easily by contacting Annabel Cook: annabel_cook@ahm.honda.com.
Refineries Report
California Refineries: For the week ending 12/4/20, refineries in California produced 6,259 barrels of gasoline and 2,195 barrels of diesel. Gasoline production was up by 2.4% and diesel production was up by 12.4% from last week’s production numbers. The current LCFS Credit for 1 MT of CO2 is $198.66.
