Welcome to the January 2022 newsletter. It feels like more of an accomplishment to ring in the new year this go around! BIANYS is preparing for the upcoming legislative sessions in Albany and DC, be on the lookout for our Legislative Alerts. If there are any issues that you would like our Legislative Committee to consider within our advocacy programs, please let me know. Also if you are interested in becoming a part of our Legislative Committee, contact us.

Finally, BIANYS is going to work with a startup from within our membership, ClearMix, to create an explainer video on what BIANYS and our members do on a daily basis. We are looking for B-role for the video. If you have videos and or pictures that you think should be included in highlighting our ecosystem, please share them with me. ClearMix has a very interesting low-cost concept on video production for startups. We will share the details with all of you once our video is done.

Element 46 Concludes Incubator's 3rd Cohort with Inaugural Pitch
Members of the third cohort of Element 46, Westchester County’s premiere incubator program, recently participated in a Pitch Day with investors from Westchester Angels.

According to Director Deborah Novick, "Since our third cohort launched, members have refined and honed their concept to lay the foundation for optimal success. We look forward to seeing how they apply their learnings from Element 46 to advance their businesses."

CNYBAC @ Upstate Medical Receives
NYS Funding
NYS has granted CNYBAC at Upstate Medical University an award of $625,000, representing a renewal of its status as state-certified business incubator.

CNYBAC Director Kathi Durdon, said the renewal will continue support of:

  • The Medical Device Innovation Challenge (MDIC) mentorship program
  • Regional NYSTAR partner events
  • NEXT innovation conference and manufacturing workshop
  • CNYBAC’s virtual concept to commercialization monthly series
  • Stipends to Innovation Law Center at Syracuse University, whose students perform commercialization research for accepted MDIC teams and due-diligence reporting of applications
CNYBAC's Zetagen Awarded Phase II 
$2 Million Grant 
National Cancer Institute (NCI) awards Zetagen Therapeutics $2M to expand the development of ZetaMet for the treatment of metastatic bone cancer.  

According to Zetagen CEO Joe Loy, "A Phase II grant from any of the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) divisions is rare and demonstrates the department's confidence in the company’s ability to develop our novel technology.
CEBIP's AMOGY Secures Amazon Investment

"Liquid Ammonia Could be the Fuel of the Future"
Brooklyn-based Amogy Inc., a developer of ammonia-based, emission-free power solutions, has landed an undisclosed investment from e-commerce giant Amazon. Amazon’s stake, announced in December, was made through the conglomerate’s $2 billion Climate Pledge Fund.

“By nature of our advanced vetting, CEBIP is bringing in companies that are geared for quicker success than some past companies,” said Director David Hamilton. And in investigating Amogy – founded by four Massachusetts Institute of Technology PhDs – Hamilton and his staff knew they had a winner.
NASA Launches
Partnership with NYIT's ETIC Incubator
NASA has contracted NYIT's College of Engineering and Computing Sciences to build “unique technology” prototypes based on NASA patents, and create “professional marketing materials” NASA can use to commercialize the new technologies.
The work will be done by students in the college’s Entrepreneurship and Tech Innovation Center, NYIT's innovative applied-sciences hub.

"The sky is the limit, in terms of potential opportunities for New York Tech students through this relationship,” according to ETIC Director Michael Nizich.
LaunchNY Receives $225,000 in Federal Funding The U.S. Treasury has awarded $225,000 to Launch NY to support investment and economic opportunities in the community.

The funding is part of a $16 million Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) fund nationwide.
LaunchNY Funds HVAC Startup's Move to Buffalo from N. Carolina
Breezi, an NC-based startup that has developed predictive maintenance technology for HVAC systems, will expand to Buffalo and set up up a pilot manufacturing site here.

Breezi is supported by a $100,000 Launch NY investment

BU was chosen from a pool of 529 applicants and will receive $500,000 to further develop their proposal to compete in Phase 2 of the Challenge, which will award 20-30 regional coalitions up to $100 million.

BU's selected $75M New Energy NY proposal seeks to establish a battery development hub in Upstate NY, to grow an energy storage cluster with national impact, built on a foundation of equity and environmental justice
During the recent Diversity In ClimateTech business accelerator, led by Chloe Capital and Cornell, five women-led climate tech companies were selected, based on their potential impact, to pitch and secure business deals.

Support Black Businesses 607 Accelerator Receives Grant
The Koffman Incubator’s Accelerator is bolstering Black businesses through programming based on the needs of participants. The first cohort of businesses/entrepreneurs hailed from the Support Black Businesses 607 Facebook group.

Through the Good Jobs Challenge, EDA is allocating $500 million to collaborative skills training systems and programs. EDA encourages efforts to reach historically underserved populations and areas, communities of color, women, and other groups facing labor market barriers such as persons with disabilities, disconnected youth, individuals in recovery, individuals with past criminal records, including justice impacted and reentry participants, serving trainees participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and veterans and military spouses.

The Queens Chamber of Commerce invites you to apply for the NYC Pandemic Recovery Grant, which provides up to $10,000 to all NYC small businesses operating in low-to-moderate income (LMI) areas.

We are excited to share details for the grant from the NYC Department of Small Business Services. This new grant is designed to help NYC’s small businesses offset operational expenses to mitigate economic hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Grants are for eligible small businesses in low-to-moderate income (LMI) areas as defined below.

Rick Gardner to Lead UB’s Economic Development Efforts
Rick Gardner, a senior product development and management executive who oversees startup ventures at UB, will become the university's new associate vice president for economic development.

The appointment will be effective January 24. Gardner will replace Christina Orsi, who held the role for nearly seven years and was recently named president of the John R. Oishei Foundation.

With more than two decades of experience in the public, private, nonprofit and startup sectors, Gardner has been an innovator throughout his career. He holds 32 U.S. patents and has taken dozens of products to market.
BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY AWARDS $90K AS PART OF INCUBATOR PROGRAM
Nine organizations have received monetary rewards as part of BPL's Incubator Pitch Competition, and will work to bring their new programs to branches across the borough.

The library launched BKLYN Incubator in 2015 to increase community input in library programming, and have since run eight rounds of funding and competition, awarding nearly $400,000 and starting dozens of successful programs from musical instrument lending libraries to a robotics club.
EDA Makes Initial Build Back Better Regional Challenge Awards
The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) recently announced the phase I winners of the Build Back Better Regional Challenge. Each of the 60 awardees receive $500,000 to support their region and cluster — and begin the process of competing for one of the 20-30 phase II awards that can be up to $100 million each.
