J-School welcomes Dr. Sanjay Gupta for William Allen White Day
After a three-year hiatus, the J-School held in-person William Allen White Day events last week, welcoming National Citation recipient Dr. Sanjay Gupta, chief medical correspondent for CNN. Gupta visited Stauffer-Flint Hall in the morning, appearing on Good Morning KU and visiting students in Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye’s class. In the afternoon, he gave his National Citation address, and students and donors were recognized at the Scholarships and Awards ceremony. Heather Lawrenz, program director and senior digital media trainer, received the Bengtson Faculty Mentor Award (pictured with Mark Mears, founder of the award).

The Eudora Times wins seven Kansas Press Association awards
The Eudora Times won seven awards in the Kansas Press Association newspaper contest, its best showing yet since launching three years ago. The J-School Recognition Ceremony for 2022 doctoral, master's and bachelor degree graduates is Saturday, May 14, at 8:30 a.m. in the Lied Center. Students eligible to participate received an email from Student Services with details on how to RSVP and pick up name cards. More information is available on the J-School website. After the ceremony, join us for a reception on the Stauffer-Flint Hall lawn.
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters and the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Foundation (KABF) offers up to $16,000 in collegiate scholarships each year. The deadline to apply is May 1. Learn more here.

The Asian American Journalists Association and the Native American Journalists Association Pacific Islander scholarship deadline is May 31. Two scholarships of $4,500 will be awarded. Apply here.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities University Workforce Development Program (CCUWDP) is offering 48 workforce development program positions across the nation this summer, and applications are now available. Submissions are open for Arterial Ink Volume II, an anthology of fiction, nonfiction and poetry relating to the legacy of William Allen White. Winners in each genre will be published in the book, and authors will have the opportunity to deliver a reading from it at William Allen White Legacy Day in Emporia on Oct. 2. The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry is hosting the Pro Communicators Conference May 19-20 in Kansas City, which will bring together communicators, marketers and public relations professionals from across the state. Student wins two Kansas Press Association first-place awards
The Kansas Press Association awarded J-School student Lily O’Shea Becker two first-place awards in its 2022 Awards of Excellence announced Friday. Competing with the work of professional journalists in the highest circulation category, Becker’s photos and a video in the Kansas Reflector won Best Online Video (News) and Best Story/Picture Combination. Both pieces of coverage documented the protests on campus in Fall 2021 alleging campus sexual violence. The Kansas Reflector is a nonprofit news organization covering Kansas. The publication celebrated Becker’s wins on their website Friday as well. Clay Wirestone, j'02, edits the Reflector’s opinion section, which also earned first place in its division.
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Associate Professor Dr. Mugur Geana is the author of the book chapter on Marketing in the recently published Encyclopedia of Journalism.

Associate Professor Joseph Erba and Assistant Dean Matt Tidwell served as panelists for a KC IABC event on April 22 entitled "The next five years of social trends for communicators." They were joined by Angie Pastorek, assistant teaching professor in the School of Professional Studies.

COPE (Communities Organizing to Promote Equity) project of which Associate Professors Yvonnes Chen and Crystal Lumpkins are a part recently had two research presentations accepted. The first one, which outlined the structure and approaches of the COPE project, was presented at KU Medical Center's Student Research Forum on April 5. The other one, which describes the role of Local Health Equity Action Teams and Community Health Workers in restructuring health services in Kansas, will be presented at the international Towards Unity for Health Conference in August. 

Are you a doctoral student interested in health communication research? Associate Professor Mugur Geana has a graduate research assistant position available for Fall 2022 to work on his NIH-funded project as well as to conduct research at CEHCUP. The GRA position includes full tuition support, a stipend and fringe benefits. Applications are open to all doctoral students in our program, including those starting their first year of study. The J-School's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee announces a Call for Proposals for the 2022 DEIB Summer Research Award. The $5,000 research award, which is open to faculty and graduate students, aims to promote applied research in an area of mass communication science that can directly benefit our understanding, acknowledgment, interaction with, research and/or acceptance of diversity. The call for proposals and detailed instructions about the submission and review process can be found here. The J-School's Tech Committee hosted a digital storytelling workshop Friday for professionals and faculty/staff across campus. Melissa Greene-Blye, Eric Thomas and Heather Lawrenz gave sessions on video, photo and graphics.

EVENTS
Kings' Court student documentary to premiere May 2
Students in JOUR 636 are premiering their short documentary about the nationally ranked basketball team, the Kansas City Kings, at 6:30 p.m. May 2 at the Burge Union, Forum B. Following practices, games and team gatherings, this documentary captures the ups and downs of basketball and heartfelt aspects of the community. This spring, the Kings traveled to Wichita to compete in the national tournament where the team discovered new meanings to basketball royalty. Register here.
