Project Green Schools attends U.S. Dept. of Education's Annual Green Strides Tour
On October 24 and 25, 2018 Project Green Schools was honored to participate in the U.S. Department of Education's Official to Visit Missouri as part of Annual Green Strides Tour - "Living School Grounds". The tour highlighted how schools use their green schoolyards – gardens, habitats, nature trails and wetlands – to engage not only with science, math, nutrition and agriculture, but also art, literature and social studies.
The St. Louis-area events included visits to school buildings and grounds, conversations with students and teachers regarding environmental education and project-based learning, and discussions with key facilities and health staff.
Roger Dorson, acting commissioner of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, participated in the tour on Wednesday. Deputy Commissioner Stacey Preis participated in activities on Thursday.

Chris Castro Joins PGS Advisory Board
Project Green Schools is excited to welcome Chris Castro to the PGS Advisory Board. Chris is the Director of Sustainability for the city of Orlando, FL.
A sustainability and clean energy expert, eco-entrepreneur, urban farmer, and community organizer with a passion to create smart, resilient, and sustainable communities.
Chris is currently the Senior Advisor to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Director of Sustainability & Resilience, and Co-chair of Smart Cities for the City of Orlando, developing partnerships, policies, and programs to support the sustainability, clean energy, & climate resilience goals of Mayor Dyer’s Green Works Orlando initiative.

National Green Schools Society Member Report
The NGSS members at Ethan Allen Prep in Ridgefield, Connecticut, are excited to report that their AquaSprouts Agraponic Garden is up and running in the Academic Center. This unique self-sustaining living ecosystem brings the concept of hydroponics and aquaponics to life. Currently, there are five fish happily swimming around and there are a variety of plants in the grow-bed atop the aquarium. The AquaSprouts Garden is a fun and educational way for the NGSS members to learn about many different topics, including the natural environment, indoor gardening, and sustainability, while taking responsibility for the care of the fish, plus so much more! This aquarium offers insight into the way hydroponic gardening works: as the fish are fed they provide waste and nutrients for the plants, and as the water is pumped back into the grow-bed the bacteria in the grow-bed converts the waste into nutrients that feed the plants and then clean water is cycled back into the aquarium. The Garden is still a work-in-progress but it's doing well and has become a wonderful part of the Academic Center.
Also, the NGSS members have recently added a new blue recycle bin to the Academic Center where all the students and staff are placing their plastic water bottles and cans.

Green Schools Society
Project Green Schools' Members receive a complimentary membership to National or International Green Schools Society. NGSS/IGSS is recognition program for environmentally focused students who achieve extraordinary impact in schools and communities. Students are awarded pins and certificates for recognition of their hours of service. Seniors can achieve a graduation stole by completing a capstone project.

National Youth Council Student Profile
Meet Justin, a second grader, and our newest National Youth Council Junior Officer!
Toothbrush Project: Plastic Pollution
Justin has loved frogs for as long as he can remember and was upset to learn that frogs are among the most rapidly disappearing animals. Almost one-third of frog species are on the verge of extinction from pollution, pesticides, and habitat destruction. When Justin learned of the dangers frogs are in, he decided to begin raising money to save them and bring awareness to the issue.
Justin’s goal goes much further than just saving the frogs His goal is to help raise the issue about plastic pollution by collecting used toothbrushes and upcycling them. Over 50 million pounds of toothbrushes enter the landfills every year. He wants to empower and educate other kids about how making a small change in their life, like the type of toothbrush they use, can also have a positive impact on the planet.

Join the Grades of Green Waste Campaign
|
Starting in January, Grades of Green is launching our four-month Waste Campaign for 6th-12th grade students to engage eco-heroes across the globe to take action to reduce waste and develop sustainable, student-led solutions to waste issues relevant to their region.
A Waste Campaign Team (a group of students, educators and community leaders) researches local waste issues, develops a solution to a water issue, and shares that idea with the community.
Winning Campaign Teams, announced in April, will also receive up to
$1,000 in Eco-Grant prizes
to fund their innovative solutions.

Budding Botanist Grant
Designed to further their mission, the
Budding Botanist Grant
will help our youngest citizens learn about plants, explore their world and inspire them to take care of the life they discover in their local ecosystems.

Healthy Whale, Healthy Ocean Challenge
Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs invites K-12 students in New England and the Gulf of Maine region (U.S./Canada) to create visual art, poetry, or short films that celebrate the North Atlantic right whale and inspire action for its protection. Scholarship awards for students and educators up to $750.

S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney Scholarship for Undergraduates

Captain Planet Foundation Grants
The
Captain Planet Foundation

The Power of One Woman

Women today are traveling worldwide sharing knowledge and having adventures in the arctic, deserts, and oceans. Women are speaking up for food justice, water protection, animal protection, and children’s rights.
Robin Organ suffered from severe allergies when she made the decision to take back her health. A former teacher and a mother of two, she had the idea to create Project Green Schools, and she acted on it.
My daughter suffered from allergies and infections until we found a doctor who supported us in taking back our health. Our lives changed when we switched to organic foods and became more aware of what goes into our bodies. I had the idea to interview women, like Robin, who acted on an idea and who are making a difference. For six years, I spoke to women from a variety of fields all working with the planet as priority. A mother of three children, I made the decision to write the book,
Power Of One Woman
. And my life has changed.
The book
Power of One Woman
features 60 women working for the planet from a variety of passions and fields from scientists, artists, educators, authors, designers, farmers, advocates and more! Chapters are written with the perspective of: courage, support, cooperation, education, self respect, compassion, etc with women's stories woven throughout.
When we know, we know. We have the information to make better decisions for ourselves, our family, our community and the planet. Women are changing lives by making simple decisions like starting a garden, speaking up, making organic clothing, and creating community schools and much more.
The Power Of One Woman is the power we each have to act upon what we know is right and from a place in our hearts.

Project Green Schools Partners with UgMo Technologies
Boston, MA, and King of Prussia, PA – July 30, 2018 - Project Green Schools and smart irrigation specialist UgMO announced today a partnership to develop impactful water conservation curriculum for K-12 students. The partners begin curriculum development this month and will sponsor individual projects and the students implementing those initiatives. The goal of this support is to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders to innovate new ways of driving water conservation and sustainability.
