WELLNESS WEEK AT RIVERSIDE: MARCH 9-13
The Health & Wellness Committee is excited to launch this new initiative! Wellness Week is an opportunity to recognize mental well-being as part of our total body health. Students will participate in daily mindfulness activities at school to promote healthy social, emotional, and behavioral development. Ask your child about these practices and carry the message of mindfulness into your home. Be on the look out for tips and suggestions during the week.
On
Thursday, March 13 at 2pm, parents are invited to hear Whitney Keyes and Laura White, authors of
Be Sensational
, an interactive collection of mindfulness activities specifically geared towards families and children. They will lead us through a few exercises we can do with our children at home to help us slow down and create peace-filled moments of pause as a family.

SCIENCE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
On Tuesday, the Kindergarten classes learned about the softer side of nature with a visit from Animal Embassy. Children interacted with warthogs (aka Pumbaa), chinchillas, turtles, and much more. Whether fur, feathers, fins or scales, animals have a variety of things they "wear." Children learned that like us, our furry friends take care of their offspring and teach them all the things they need to know to succeed.

UPCOMING PTA ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS 2020

March 10: Bash the Trash (2nd grade)
March 13: Storyteller Lot Therrio (Kindergarten)
March 13: Riverside Rhythms - The Grace Notes
Ask your children about what they learned! These programs are all run thanks to the generous donations and sponsored by the Riverside School
PTA.

JOIN THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM!
The
Riverside PTA website
is our one-stop resource for information on all PTA activities. We are looking for people to join the website team! Work behind the scenes on activities such as ticket sales, signups, publicity, and copy-writing. It's a great role for people who prefer to work mainly at home. No coding experience needed - just a bit of tech-savvy would do!
Please contact Julie Dozier at [email protected] with any questions.

TURN YOUR KEY - BE IDLE FREE
P
lease keep our students safe and help create an
Idle Free Riverside School!
Anti-Idling signs were installed around school last spring and we just wanted to kindly remind you not to leave your car running while parked at school. Extra layers can be worn during colder periods and consider sharing or carpooling to reduce the number of cars at school during drop off and pick up.
Please help reduce the amount of harmful pollution surrounding our school and turn your car off if standing for more than 3 minutes. It's

NOTE: CHANGE OF DATE
FOR FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT
Wednesday, March 4th from 6-7 pm. Riverside School will hold a Family Science Night with all teachers participating to help families learn more about the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the type of science learning and activities their children are experiencing this year at school.
At least six science stations will be set up (one by each grade level) so that parents can participate with their children in a learning activity, directed by teachers on that grade level and others. Families can attend the grade level activity for their child(ren) and 1 or 2 more learning activities if they have time. We hope to see you there!
|
Please be sure to use the School
Dismissal Manager system to record all absences, tardies, early releases or changes to your child's regular dismissal plan. Please include if your child attends AFTERS or another program at school (i.e. the play) as a recurring absence with the note on which afters class or program they are attending. Also, please note that parents should not be going to the classrooms to pick up their children. If you need to pick-up your child(ren) early, you must go straight to the main office and the staff will call for your child. Parents in the building must always sign in and are to visit only when there is a planned meeting with staff or a classroom event. The office is available to assist with any other questions or concerns.
|
HEARING TESTS
Hearing tests will be conducted over the next few weeks for grades 1, 2, 4 and 5.
Those who have already turned in your 2019/2020 physicals will not be tested again. If you have your child's updated physical please send it to the school. If you want to opt out, please email the nurse Melissa Luiso
[email protected].ct.us.
As a friendly reminder...
All updated 3rd Grade physicals are needed "Before" end of the school year. If the school nurse does not receive them before the first day of the 2020 school year in August, those students WILL NOT be allowed to attend school until received.

FLU SEASON REMINDERS!
Flu Season has arrived with a vengeance and our school is getting hit hard right now.
It is imperative that anyone having symptoms be checked immediately. The State mandates that flu cases are reported. In the event your child is diagnosed, please contact the school nurse IMMEDIATELY, as well as provide written confirmation by your Medical Provider.
In order to prevent continued spread of the flu, please adhere to our district's "Five Day Rule Policy," by keeping a child diagnosed with the flu at home for five days. We recognize it's difficult to do so, but it really is necessary to prevent an outbreak.
Please do not hesitate to call or email should you have concerns or questions. We want to keep everyone healthy and it starts with You.
Thank you on behalf of the Nurse and Entire Staff at Riverside for your compliance.

NEXT STEP OF THE YEARBOOK - INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PAGES
Thank you to everyone for submitting your yearbook photos.
It is now time for the students to create their own pages (with your help)! Each 5th Grader will have his or her own page in our yearbook. These will be created using the PICTAVO software; it's easy to use and will create great results.
We have
detailed instructions on how to access the system and get started (including a few examples). Please read all directions carefully and remember that everyone's page will look different and will reflect each individual student. These are NOT meant to be dedication pages from the parent to the child but instead for your child to create.
You can also access these instructions from the
RIVPTA.ORG website - go to Parent Resources/ Fifth Grade Families/ Yearbook.
Please contact Sarah Morris with any questions. Deadline for the Student Pages is
Monday, March 16, 2020.
