Thank You Notes from Students to BHS Staff
Please send appreciation messages by April 28th, 2022

Students - We understand the learning experience for everyone has been tough for both students and BHS staff, for the past couple of years. We know that despite the challenges we face, through the efforts of our staff, there have been some shining lights that we can shout out. As part of our thank you to the staff during Staff Appreciation Week (May 2 - 6), we would like to include some of your notes on what made this school year memorable. Examples? An unusual project, an out-of-the-box assignment, an inspirational quote or thought, something outside of the norm that stands out as making a difference, something that kept you motivated and/or helped you to stay engaged. Using only titles (no personal names, please), send a thank you to Teachers, Counselors, or any staff member at BHS! | Email notes and/or questions to: Rachel Li at Bellevue405Li@gmail.com

Parents, please tell your student/s to email Rachel Li, Bellevue405Li@gmail.com,
with their appreciation messages!
Student Appreciation Message Deadline – April 28,2022
BSF LUNCHEON
Dear BHS Families,

Hope all is well with you and your families.

This is Qiuya(Rachel) Li. I have a junior student at Bellevue High. We have been residing in this community for 10 years; and we love Bellevue. This is my second year as a trustee for Bellevue Schools Foundation. For some of you who've never heard of BSF, here is our website: https://www.bellevueschoolsfoundation.org/ Our mission is to promote and fund the best possible learning opportunities for all students in Bellevue’s public schools. On May 13th, 2022, we'll be having our annual fundraiser at Hyatt Regency @ Bellevue. I know some of you have signed up as table captain as well. In case you haven't already, please welcome to join my table. This link will take you to a page with two registration options – in person, or virtual; my name (Trustee - Qiuya Rachel Li) is on the drop-down menu. I will be there in person, and hope to have you at my table. While registration for the luncheon is free, it is my hope (and the Foundation’s) that all attendees donate to the Foundation at this time to ensure students and educators will continue to receive funding for critical initiatives. All attendees have the chance to attend the event as a Spring for Schools Leadership Donor, which defines philanthropic leadership in a brand-new way. Donate for the first time (any amount!), or any gift larger than your last (by $1.00 or more), and you are in!

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about the Bellevue Schools Foundation or Spring for Schools!

Look forward to seeing you there.

Regards,
Qiuya(Rachel) Li

GOLD ACORN
NOMINATIONS NEEDED!
Each year our BHS PTSA recognizes two individuals for making outstanding efforts on behalf of our students. The Golden Acorn Award is presented to a school or community volunteer in recognition of their dedication and service to children and youth. The Outstanding Educator Award recognizes individuals who make significant contributions that enhance the education of children.

We need to hear from you! Do you know a school volunteer or teacher who has had a significant impact on your student during the past school year? If so, please send an email to mzhou12@yahoo.com to nominate this person for the Golden Acorn (outstanding volunteer) or Outstanding Educator (super teacher) Award. Include their name and what they’ve done to make an impact on your student or why you think they deserve to be recognized. Award winners will be recognized at our final General Membership meeting in early June.
Attention Seniors!
Go Aloha for 2022
{Lei Fundraiser Coming Soon}
The Bellevue Orchestra Booster Club will be selling Leis for the graduating class of 2022. As in years past, wearing a Lei at the BHS graduation ceremony has become a long standing tradition.  These strings of golden yellow plumeria have become the must-have accessory for our graduating students' big day.  Not only is it a way for seniors to spruce up their cap and gown, but it is also a way to help give back to the Bellevue High School Orchestra. The Orchestra Boosters’ Lei fundraiser helps contribute to scholarships, the purchase of instruments and sheet music, and provides funding for field trips.

As we gather the final information from our Hawaiian store liaison, please watch for pricing, how to purchase, and other information in the coming weeks via the Blast and by visiting our website at www.BellevueOrchestra.org.

"We all come to the theatre with baggage. The baggage of our daily lives, the baggage of our problems, the baggage of our tragedies, the baggage of being tired. It doesn't matter what age you are. But if our hearts get opened and released -- well that is what theatre can do, and does sometimes, and everyone is thankful when that happens."- Vanessa Redgrave

WOLVERINE GUARD 2021-2022
If you are working on Wolverine Guard hours, make sure to get your applications and forms with hours and signature forms in by the end of the day of April 30th!  WG is a Bellevue High PTSA sponsored award that recognizes students who perform 100+ hours of community service in the 12-month period from May 1st to April 30th of each school year.  Students who complete the WG requirements earn a certificate of recognition and who get WG two years during high school, get a special tassel at graduation.

Make sure all of your volunteer hour forms are signed by the person supervising the activity and an email/phone number for that person.

For current guidelines, rules and required forms for WG 2021-22, please go to the BHS PTSA website, https://www.bellevuehighptsa.com/wp/ and look under BHS PTSA Programs.

As a reminder: The PTSA WG program is separate from the Bellevue School District's volunteer hours requirement for graduation.  However, hours that are earned to meet graduation requirements may also be used to meet WG requirements. You will need to download WG forms off of our website to both record your hours (and get supervisor’s signatures!) and the WG Application form.  Thank you to those students who are supporting people through giving your time and energy. You do make a difference!

Please note that Wolverine Guard hours are subject to approval. Usually, volunteer hours need to be done for an organization with 501(c)(3) status.

Please contact Patti Liffick or Nancy Huenefeld Gese (Your WG Co-Chairs) at wolverineguard@bellevuehighptsa.com with any questions that you have.

PASSING OF A GREAT FAN OF OUR BHS COMMUNITY
The day we hoped wouldn’t come was today…our beloved friend, Gary Hartness has passed away. It was a massive cardiac arrest and despite the best efforts of paramedics and Evergreen ER staff, he has gone to be with his Savior Jesus. The Strand Family Alan Strand Kim Strand Blackburn and Kelli Strand Daniels will be working on a celebration of life for Gary. If you would like to participate, please message this page or the Strand Family. He was a light in our lives and touched so many with his unstoppable spirit and positivity. Watching my folks, Nancy and Alan Strand, care for him for as long as I can remember was an example of fierce love and gentleness. My Dad called Gary his pal and it lit him up when dad walked in the room. Dad was his protector and together with mom visited Gary nearly every week, We will always love him and never forget him. Until we meet you again in heaven Gary!!

Many of us in the Bellevue High School community never had the great opportunity to meet Gary Hartness. Gary was a Bellevue High School graduate from 1962, who made BHS his lifelong home and connection to all things important in his life. I am a fortunate person who did have the chance to know Gary and share some moments of kindness and connection of friendship since I was a Sophomore at BHS in 1983.

Many of the graduating classes of Bellevue High School gifted Gary updated letterman jackets which he wore into the ground , celebrated him with dances in his honor (The Gary Hop a most popular edition), listened to his radio show on KASB or his many call in’s to disc jockeys of all sorts of music genre in his repertoire.

Gary could talk all levels of history in rock n’ roll and country music. He would often welcome many student to school each day with a simple wave and “Hi.” Gary truly loved the Bellevue High School community and for so many years BHS provided Gary with a safe and good place to be.

Gary’s spirit lives on with the annual Spirt of Gary Hartness Award, celebrating those students who bring so much to the spirit and care for the BHS school community.

Be KIND Bellevue!!!
