Summer Break #2

It is amazing that summer break is already half over! So, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer while also being safe and following all CDC guidelines. Although some students are wrapping up summer school, report cards were mailed home last week. If you did not receive your child's report card, please contact the school (after July 6) as some have been returned due to possible address changes. Eighth graders taking summer school are able to continue working, please continue to communicate with your summer school teachers.

Summer School. Edgenuity will remain accessible for any 8th grader yet to complete their course work. Remember, Edgenuity is a digital platform that can be accessed anywhere - even while you are out of town (vacationing or visiting).

School reopening plans continue to evolve and updates can be obtained by listening to the Superintendent's calls and by following the district's social media or clicking on the health advisory link on the front page of www.ocps.net

Summer Hours. Visitor hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, at all schools and district offices. All visitors still require an appointment prior to their visit to conform with health and safety requirements. All buildings are closed on Fridays.

Parental Support. Liberty would like to recognize all parental and community support. We could not be successful without dedicated, loving and supportive parents and partners!

Avoiding the "Summer Slide." We desire students to maintain their academic focus in preparation for next year, so please access the links below which provide a large list of books and e-books offered by OCPS and the Orange County Library System as well as math references. Parents, please look over any of these sites and possible registrations that your child may need.

Liberty would like to thank the PTSA Board for all the hard work they do with free and willing hearts. PTSA is instrumental in fundraising at all school events, volunteering at student celebrations such as Renaissance, donating student incentives, supporting teacher initiatives and providing the annual welcome back breakfast for staff members and much more. I never want their work to go unnoticed as all they do is for the benefit of ALL Liberty students.

Parents, please consider joining PTSA  for the upcoming school year. Donating just a little of your time and supporting with a $5 donation will help impact the lives of our students and teachers!

Special Recognition - Academics

Mj Arolfo - Duke Tip Student (Duke University Gifted Program)
"Mj Arolfo, a 7th-grade student at Liberty Middle School, was recently honored for achieving an exceptional score on the SAT, the same test taken by college bound high school students. Mj took this above-grade-level test as a participant in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). Duke TIP is a nonprofit organization that recognizes academically talented students and provides advanced learning opportunities that foster their intellectual and social growth.

Each year, Duke TIP identifies a select group of students as academically gifted, based on their standardized test scores. Those students are invited to take the ACT or SAT, which can provide crucial insight into a gifted student's strengths and abilities. The highest scorers among these students are invited to a special recognition ceremony, typically hosted at one of over two dozen colleges and universities. While the in-person ceremonies were postponed this year, Duke TIP celebrated these students' academic achievements by providing their families an at-home ceremony toolkit."

Susan Wilcox - Marilyn Simmons Award Recipient (Ecology and Liberty's Green Team)
Susan Wilcox is our Green Team Co-Coordinator and a valued PTSA member. Ms. Wilcox helped to start the Green Team at Liberty and was the lead on the school's beautification project which recruited students, staff and community to clean up the overgrown garden in preparation for vegetable planning and art projects. Future plans include adding an organic vegetable garden and butterfly friendly plants. Ms. Wilcox is dedicated to helping keep Liberty beautiful and well-deserving of this award!

In the Spotlight!

Ryan Fogle
Mr. Fogle, Cafeteria Manager from Odyssey Middle, has done a phenomenal job coordinating the Grab and Go meals at Liberty since the beginning of the pandemic school closures. Liberty and the community appreciate all the hard work and dedication of Mr. Fogle and his team. It is because of his team management abilities, Liberty continues to serve high numbers of families on a weekly basis. For example, last Thursday Liberty gave out extra meals for the holiday. This took a lot of prep to get ready, serving 14,724 meals!!! Kudos to Mr. Fogle and his team.

Gabriel Pina
Former 8th grader, Gabriel Pina and mom dropped by for a quick visit. We wish him well in high school!

PTSA

Hey Liberty Families!

We hope you are well and staying safe. The board has voted to hold off on our General Election meeting until we are able to hold an in person meeting once the safe at home restrictions have relaxed.

The existing board has agreed to stay in their positions until the General Meeting is held and we are able to vote in next year's Executive Board. Due to the Pandemic, the Florida PTA has given local units permission to extend the General Meeting dates until we are able to meet safely. Please email Pam Yates with any questions at [email protected]. Thank you!

Please consider donating when visiting this summer!

Donating clothes and shoes to Liberty's recycling bin helps raise funds for the school. Remember, when you come on campus, please try to make a donation. Thank you!

Continuing Reminder: STUDENT TECH REQUESTS

If your student is having difficulty with their laptop, please remember to try the trouble shooting techniques first before putting in a tech request. Students may enter a tech request as studenttechrequest.ocps.net In the description box, where you detail what is happening to your computer, please include the student's number as well as a good contact number for a parent or guardian, with their name as well.
