Alameda CTC Celebrates Earth Day 2022
This Earth Day, we want to restate our commitment to keeping Alameda County at the forefront of protecting the climate and our environment. Alameda CTC works closely with our local partners on clean mobility projects, programs and policies that support sustainable transportation, reduce emissions and increase multimodal transportation options. Here are some projects and programs that we’re especially proud of in 2022.
Golden Sneaker Contest Award Winner
Every year, Alameda County school communities are encouraged to reduce their carbon footprint while also using safe and active modes to travel by participating in the Golden Sneaker Contest. Between February 28 and March 11, 2022, 80 schools and over 15,000 students countywide participated in this year’s contest. The contest is sponsored by Alameda CTC’s Safe Routes to Schools program and encourages school communities—students, parents, teachers and school administrators—to walk, roll, carpool and use public transit to get to school. A Golden Sneaker trophy is awarded to the classroom at each participating school that logged the highest rate of active and shared travel. The highly-coveted Platinum Sneaker Award goes to the school that had the highest participation in Alameda County. Congratulations to EnCompass Academy and the Oakland Unified School District for their 2022 award!
Cleaner and Greener Goods Movement
In 2021, Alameda CTC provided matching funds to help secure a California Air Resources Board/California Energy grant toward the purchase of thirty (30) hydrogen trucks for a pilot program that will develop hydrogen fuel drayage trucks and install a fueling station for drayage trucks serving the Port of Oakland. The pilot program will represent the largest commercial deployment of Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks in the United States and will significantly reduce emissions from trucking activities and improve air quality in the West Oakland community that surrounds the Port of Oakland.
Clean Mobility On the Move
We were also very excited to feature a Clean and Green panel at our annual Commission Retreat in late March. The panel highlighted a number of initiatives across the region to advance climate policy and support deployment of zero-emission vehicles. The Sonoma County Transportation Authority/Regional Climate Protection Authority described inter-disciplinary efforts they lead to reduce emissions and protect the environment. East Bay Community Energy (EBCE) shared their plans to facilitate more electric vehicles in households across Alameda County and heavy-duty truck analysis underway. AC Transit provided an overview of its Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) Program, which has led innovation for transit agencies transitioning to zero emission fleets. AC Transit is steadily building the infrastructure (charging stations and maintenance facilities) and work force program to enable the agency to reach its goal of a 100% zero emission bus fleet.
Interstate 80/Gilman Street Interchange Overcrossing
Construction of Phase 1of the Interstate 80 (I-80)/Gilman Street Interchange project, consisting of a major new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing, is well underway! Modernization of the I-80/Gilman Street interchange connects communities, making it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to access the Bay Trail. This particular interchange has long been known as a danger zone for those on bikes, in wheelchairs, pushing strollers and on foot, and these improvements will be a step toward a safer Alameda County. And of course, more people on bikes and on foot means less traffic and less impact on the environment. See the video simulation of the Phase 1 pedestrian/bicycle overcrossing that crosses over I-80 south of Gilman Street. Phase 1 is anticipated to be completed in 2023. In Phase 2, we will build two roundabouts to improve safety for all users. Also, additional improvements at the street level through the interchange will be built for cyclists and pedestrians. The project will close the Bay Trail gap and improve safety at the Gilman/Union Pacific Railroad crossing. Every step toward safety is a step toward climate stewardship, increasing access to public outdoor recreation spaces for all users.
Get Ready! May is Bike Month
Throughout the month of May, Alameda CTC is excited to co-sponsor Bike Month with Bike East Bay—an organization that promotes healthy, sustainable communities by making bicycling safe, fun and accessible. Bike Month is a month-long slate of programs designed to encourage all residents of Alameda County to choose a bike when they are faced with which transportation mode to use. The month’s flagship event is “Bike to Wherever Day” on Friday, May 20. There will be activities across Alameda County, including raffles, energizer stations and more! Look for our ads on your favorite social media channel, AC Transit buses and kiosks and at BART stations and get on your bicycle and ride to wherever during the month of May.
