TenneT Netherlands Selects ACCC
®  AZR ™  Conductor for Reconductor Project in the Netherlands

Several months ago, CTC Global introduced the ACCC AZR
Conductor which uses an aluminum zirconium alloy to augment overall conductor strength and modulus to help fight extreme ice and wind loads. TenneT Netherlands selected ACCC AZR ™ for the new product's initial deployment in Europe.

The Delesto combined heat and power plant and the Eneco bio-energy plant are located in Delfzijl, Netherlands. These power stations are connected to the Delfzijl Weiwerd high-voltage substation and from this high-voltage substation, 110 and 220 kV connections transport and distribute the power, which include the Groningen Hunze high-voltage substation. This connection is important for the energy supply of the city of Groningen, as the region is generating more and more sustainable electricity.

In order to be able to continue to supply and distribute these and other planned new energy sources, TenneT Netherlands is reinforcing the 110 kV connection between Groningen Hunze and Delfzijl Weiwerd.

TenneT faced a particular challenge when upgrading the double circuit line between Groningen and Delfzijl. The total route length of 28.2 km over flat terrain covering 89 towers is subject to high wind and potentially extreme ice loads. TenneT selected ACCC Warsaw size ACCC AZR Conductor manufactured by Midal Cables which satisfied their capacity increase requirements from 760 amps to 1323 amps. An additional 2.1 km spur line tying in the Stadskanal substation also upgraded from 500 amps to 777 amps at the same time.

"This design adds significant capability and cost-effectiveness to CTC Global's proven ULS (Ultra-Low-Sag) core variants already deployed in Northern Europe, particularly for areas where high wind and ice loads can be expected" stated Dr. Eric Bosze, CTC Global's Director of Conductor Materials Research.

ETESA Completes 2nd 230 kV ACCC® Conductor Installation in Panama

With the support of EPC firm Elecnor Group, ETESA completed the installation of 85.23 circuit kilometers of 714 kcmil Dove size ACCC Conductor to replace forty-six year old 750 kcmil ACAR conductor on their Mata de Nance to Veladero line near David City, Panama.

The project included a 38 kilometer section of suspension towers with no dead-end structures, requiring a strategic stringing plan provided by CTC Global's Master Installers  Sergio Rojas and Ismael Dones. Replacing the ACAR conductor with ACCC Conductor allowed ETESA to increase line capacity from 230 MVA to 480 MVA.

ACCC Conductor provided for the project was produced by Viakon. The average span length was 350 meters, but greater in some areas where the conductor traversed river and mountain crossings. Forjasul provided hardware and Tesmec tensioners were used.

CTC Global Congratulates South Carolina Electric & Gas for Winning the 2019 SEE Transmission Line Category Award

With remarkable growth in and around Charleston, South Carolina, SCE&G completed their SEE Award Winning Cainhoy Transmission upgrade to accommodate load growth and improve grid reliability. In addition to building a new 230 kV substation, SCE&G also upgraded a number of 115 and 230 kV lines using different conductor types - including ACCC Conductor.

The three year project included two major river crossings and several miles of marsh areas where work was performed using barges. SCE&G's technical and operations achievements - delivered on time and on budget - will provide more robust and reliable service to the growing Mount Pleasant and Charleston area.
ACCC
® Conductor Presented At Leitungsbau Switzerland

The annual Leitungsbau event held at EKZ Dietikon presents the Swiss TSO and DSO community with the opportunity to share experiences on network developments through a series of presentations and associated Q&As. Whilst operating a separate network with its own generation, SBB (the Swiss Railway) also operates a significant network at different voltages and frequencies.

The Swiss population is especially sensitive to any network developments, particularly overhead lines, and EMF emission levels are the lowest in Europe. This, coupled with a public preference to use underground cables wherever possible, presents Swissgrid and the other operators with particular challenges in network expansion.

With overhead line emissions regulated, the size of any overhead conductor is limited and pathways tend to be very tight over undulating territory. It was with this background that, for the 2019 Leitungsbau event, CTC Global was tasked by the organizing committee of Electrosuisse to present an overview of modern conductor technologies, including ACCC® Conductors.

During the presentation, CTC Global used its CCP
(Conductor Comparison Program) software to demonstrate the temperature and current-carrying capacity of various conductor types which would be compliant with the Swiss regulations.

"Our comparisons on capacity increase and sag reduction stimulated considerable interest," stated Peter Hughes, CTC Global's VP for North Europe after the event. "This was the first time composite technologies were presented to the Swiss audience at a national level and modern conductors clearly have a role to play in future network developments."
CTC Global Supports NARUC

CTC Global sponsored and attended the 2019 National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas November 17-20.

The Annual Meeting and Education Conference convened state and national utility regulators, federal and state policymakers, industry representatives, consumer advocates, informed experts, and other engaged stakeholders. During the four-day conference, general and parallel session panel discussion covered a range of issues across the energy sector.

CTC Global had several discussions with state Commissioners and other interested participants about the opportunity for a state to reduce electric customer's costs and reduce CO2 emissions by directing electric utilities to include energy efficiency criterion at the project design stage for every transmission or distribution (T&D) capital project.

This policy action when implemented in the utility T&D process will substantially reduce the T&D system losses over time.  This saves energy and capital costs for the electric customers as well as reducing air and water emissions from fossil-fueled power plants.

CTC Global's Conductor Comparison Program CCP Software is Available Online

CTC Global is pleased to announce that our highly regarded Conductor Comparison Program (CCP) software is now available online, and is accessible at:
LINK  The new web-based version has all the features found in the Excel version, which has been replaced and will no longer be supported. The new version is designed to make it easier to use, and it also has some new features. Having CCP online will make it easier to keep it up-to-date with new wire files and other data, and to add improvements as they are made. Users will always know they have the current version every time they log in. CCP is also compatible with tablets.

All data required for calculations is entered on one page. Representative ACCC® Conductors are automatically selected based on the "base" conductor selected. Some fields are automatically entered based on earlier entries or saved user preferences. For example, latitude is entered from a web app based on the project location, and currency conversion is provided using real-time web app information. The user can edit most input data, including default and automatically selected data. Registered users can save multiple projects, recall them, modify them and save them as new projects or overwrite the existing projects.

CCP comparison output is displayed on a separate page. Frequently changed input used for sensitivity analysis is conveniently provided on that same page to minimize toggling between pages. Registered users can export reports that break out sections of the output to PDF and Excel files.

Registration to use CCP requires only a valid email address and password. Users may also use CCP as a guest however, saving and export features are only available to registered users.

Thank you for using our CCP. We welcome your feedback. For technical support, please contact [email protected]
