Student Voices in the Arts
The Garfield High School Choir recently recorded a video performance of “You Will Be Found” from the musical, Dear Evan Hansen by the Garfield HS Choir directed by their phenomenal teacher Blake Saunders. Band director Jared Sessink provided the music editing and video production.

It is a powerful message that expresses how students are feeling now and will resonate with everyone in this moment.

A note from one of the teachers:
This video specifically talks about the experience of isolation during the pandemic(s). This is a gentle warning to the heaviness that we are exploring here. Know that the video may bring up some emotions and that is okay; we are all working through this together. You are not alone.
Jared Sessink
Franklin High School drama students have created the perfect mystery podcast for your winter break downtime - Murder at Ollingford Academy.

Directed by Drama teacher Sara Call and written, produced, and performed by by the FHS students.

Watch the Garfield choir video when you need a good cry and listen to the Franklin podcast when you need an escape. Both will leave you in awe of our students.
Youth Voice from the Teen Youth Arts Panel
Another way to learn from students is to ask them. The Creative Advantage sponsored a youth panel this Monday on what it's like to be an art student during Covid-19. Teens who are part of youth programs at KEXP, Seattle Art Museum and TeenTix shared their experiences and advice for teachers and teaching artists who working remotely, including:

  • Remind teens that it’s okay to miss a deadline and be a little bit lighter on yourself.
  • Screen fatigue is so real! Be kind and patient. Be okay with some things not being translatable to online.
  • We all need to adjust for things taking longer online and be okay with that.
  • Keep community by adopting collaboration as medium for engagement. Working on group project gives students more agency and helps give each student a way to shine and show their individual talents.
  • On a Zoom (or Teams) call your learning is much more concentrated and intense. Educators should try to lean toward independent learning and limit the time on screen.

Partner Spotlight:
Seattle Asian Art Museum and
Seattle Art Museum
Seattle Art Museum educators have created new creative learning resources, from virtual tours to lesson plans, to enhance your remote classroom!

Eyes on Asia is SAM's new video series showcasing contemporary and historic works from the Seattle Asian Art Museum. Aligned with Washington State learning standards in Visual Art and English Language Arts, these dynamic videos transport students to the museum and explore art's power to inspire critical thinking, personal reflection, and creative response.

Art of Empathy is a live, virtual tour focused on social emotional learning. Through art, we can increase our capacity for empathy by learning about diverse cultures, hearing different points of view, and reflecting on emotions. These tours are free for all public schools and can be customized to meet the needs of your students. To learn more and book your tour, email schooltours@seattleartmuseum.org

If you're looking for curriculum, our Look & Makes are simple lesson plans for teachers and families, each based on one work of art from the collection. Offered in Spanish, Chinese and English, these resources explore a wide range of artworks and include discussion questions, information, and a creative activity using basic materials.

PAUSE for Presence Course Series: The Art of Allowing Education to Heal
Dr. Bre is back!
The Creative Advantage is offering a 4-session series for a cohort of educators with Dr. Bre Haizlip, PAUSE for Presence Course Series: The Art of Allowing Education to Heal. This course is designed for people who have attended a previous workshop by Dr. Bre and those who are new. Eleven clock hours available for participants. Use your SPS email address when registering. This is to document attendance for clock hours.

Workshop Description:
Art has power and when art meets people where they are; it has the power to heal and transform how we teach and how we learn. In these unprecedented times, students and teachers alike, are experiencing varying degrees of trauma, stress and uncertainty. The purpose of this 4-part course series is to provide a cohort of teachers with relevant awareness, knowledge and skills that center artistic teaching and healing-centered social justice modalities. In order to effectively tap into the healing agents of artistic teaching, educators deserve a moment to pause for presence, reflect on their own well-being and learn how to effectively navigate trauma in teaching and learning environments. The 4-part course series is intended for participants that can attend every session as part of a cohort.

Workshop dates (please plan to attend all sessions):
• Tuesday, January 19, 4-7pm
• Tuesday, February 9, 4-7pm
• Tuesday, March 2, 4-7pm
• Tuesday, May 25, 4-6pm
