We are bringing in guest speakers making it a very interactive Summit. You are encouraged to bring additional staff and board members.

Reduced registration fee. As you recall, the registration fee has been $250 in past years. This year in partnership with Northwest AHEC of Wake Forest School of Medicine and part of the NC AHEC program we are able to reduce the registration fee to only $50 for one person and $25 for additional staff and volunteers who attend from your clinic.

Something Big Just Happened!
On Thursday, February 20, NCAFCC's leadership team traveled to Shelby, NC to participate in the launch of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina's new Rural Health Initiative. We were there on the invitation of Blue Cross NC to join eight other community-based organizations as a new partner representing the free and charitable clinic community. Speaker of the House of Representatives Tim Moore was there along with all the top executives of Blue Cross NC and that was big news. Blue Cross NC announced that it was awarding a total of $8 million in sponsorships to the nine community partners and that was big news. But, the biggest news for NCAFCC was that we were receiving a large, multi-year sponsorship grant from Blue Cross NC the insurance company, not Blue Cross the Foundation. We've contended for a long time that our work in providing healthcare to NC's uninsured was inextricably linked to the health insurance industry, but this is the first time that a health insurer has stepped forward with a financial commitment of this magnitude that acknowledges our connection. No longer are we sitting on the sidelines of public discourse about the uninsured, while federal and state health policymakers struggle to expand health insurance for North Carolinians. Now, we can express directly to these policymakers and insurers alike the value and quality of the care that our free and charitable clinics deliver each day. Now, that's a big deal! We'll be offering more details about our plans for the future at our upcoming NCAFCC Summit on April 30. Please be making plans to attend!
 
As we transition during 2020 from our nearly 15 years of support by the BCBSNC Foundation to now engaging directly with Blue Cross NC, the health insurer, we acknowledge with gratitude the BCBSNC Foundation's commitment to our work. During our journey together of a decade and a half, we have been able to expand access to healthcare across the state and improve the health outcomes of our uninsured patients with diabetes and hypertension. My guess is that it won't be long before we once again find ourselves engaged with BCBSNC Foundation's funding priorities, but, until then, we offer our deep gratitude for a strong history of partnership.

The countdown to the Summit has begun! Phone calls and gatherings are happening over the next four weeks with our membership and board members. We really want your feedback and are going to need you fully engaged at our Summit on April 30 th and May 1 st. We have two days filled with speakers, workshops and networking. For it to be a success, WE NEED YOU! The registration fees have been greatly reduced so that you can bring additional staff and board members. PLEASE BRING A BOARD MEMBER! We will be stretching how we think, how we serve our population, how we support our staff and volunteers and how we can support each other. Looking forward to seeing each of you.

2019 NCAFCC Annual Outcomes Survey Update
Completion of the 2019 Annual Outcomes Survey was due on
February 29, 2020. All surveys will go through a review and data cleaning process. Any findings in question will be forwarded to respondents for clarifications. If your organization receives an email correspondence regarding survey review findings, please respond as soon as possible.

All NCAFCC members were asked to complete Sections A – C of the survey, but to be eligible for the Outcomes Grant funding opportunity, members must have also completed section D.
 
Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Transformation Initiative Announcement
We are glad to announce that the PCMH Transformation Initiative will be extended in 2020. Up to 12 clinics that participated in the initiative in 2019 will be offered the opportunity to participate in 2020.
 
Roadmap to Health Equity Update
For those of you that may not be familiar, Roadmap to Health Equity is an initiative led by Americares, Loyola University, the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, and free and charitable clinic stakeholders across the country. NCAFCC staff and many NCAFCC members have been serving as a part of this initiative. This national effort will help demonstrate and evaluate quality of care and lay the foundation for addressing health inequities impacting our most vulnerable patient populations.
The objective of the initiative is to design an infrastructure to enable clinics across the country to collect and report on a standardized set of quality measures and sociodemographic factors. Thus, laying a foundation for improvements in care and giving clinics a tool to demonstrate quality of care and to assess their progress in promoting health equity.

2019 Roadmap Committee’s Highlights included:
·         Development of Roadmap to Health Equity messaging materials,
·         Draft introduction for the Quality Measure Starter Set User Guide,
·         Selecting Vision Tree (software vendor) to build the Roadmap to Health Equity xxxxxdata repository,
·         Selection of 50 clinics to participate in a pilot program. Three from North xxxxxCarolina, Community Care Clinic-Elizabeth City, Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic- xxxxxCashiers and Scotland Community Clinic-Laurinburg,
·         Second Roadmap to Health Equity Convening held in Atlanta in October, and
·         Securing funds from Americares for 2020 Roadmap initiatives.

NCAFCC Summit 2020
If you've made it this far into the newsletter then you have already read about the exciting news of this year's Summit. In my five years at the association, I have to say that this meeting is shaping up to be completely different from any other meeting we've had during that time. Please note that the meeting is in a different location but the room rate is very reasonable at only $119/night with a free breakfast. Lunch and dinner on Thursday will also be provided. Free Telemedicine Neurology Consultations
Have you heard about our free telemedicine neurology consultation program? Through an arrangement with The Apractis Clinic, your providers are able to consult with neurologists to enhance the care you provide to your patients. It's simple to do and I encourage you to contact me for more information. We can set up a video meeting with you and your providers with the neurologist heading up the program so you can learn about it. Our goal is to expand the telemedicine to include dermatologists and endocrinologists in the future.

Funding Opportunity from Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust
Building Partnerships and Organizational Capacity to Address Social Drivers of Poor Health

Achieving greater equity in health outcomes will require genuine partnership between hospitals and health systems and the community organizations that are embedded in underserved areas or led by residents with low incomes. The Trust is interested in hearing from organizations and collaboratives working to build these partnerships to address a specific social driver of poor health. Call-by date: March 11, 2020 (for the April 2 deadline). Application deadline: April 2, 2020.
Clinic News

Moore Free & Charitable Clinic recognized one of its co-founders, retired physician Dr. David Bruton, at its annual Hearts and Hands event on February 2, 2020. Over 200 friends of the Clinic gathered in the Grand Ballroom at the Carolina Hotel to celebrate the work of the Clinic. 
 
Clinic CEO Tony Price presented the “Above and Beyond Award” to Dr. Bruton in appreciation for his advocacy for health care for the underserved and for his dedication to the Clinic over more than 15 years. The Above and Beyond Award is presented annually by the Clinic to an employee, volunteer or supporter who goes the extra mile to help the Clinic fulfill its mission: With compassion and respect, Moore Free & Charitable Clinic provides health care to the low income uninsured of Moore County.
 
Dr. Bruton spearheaded the organization of the Clinic in 2004, when volunteer providers started seeing patients in space lent by the Moore County Health Department. He served as its medical director for several years and remains active as a board members and trusted advisor.

The event’s keynote address was special as well, featuring the CEO of the National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics, Nicole Lamoureaux. She noted that non-profits like Moore Free & Charitable Clinic are often left out of the health care political debate, but they provided services to over 2 million patients in the U.S. last year, 83% of whom are members of a working household.
