Message from Principal Langer
In recent months, we have noticed a lot of "hands-on" behaviors. Consequently, we are trying to help students keep their hands and feet to themselves.  We understand that physicality is part of communication for students, however, when they get to middle school age, students need to learn to use their words more so than their hands to communicate with others.  Our goal is for students to begin to understand personal space and how to respect each other's personal space. One example is during lunch time. It is very hard for many students to keep their hands only on their own food!  They love to tease each other, grab each other's food, destroy it, toss it, hide it, etc. We are trying to explain how this is not respectful of each other or the environment (cafeteria).

Glacial Drumlin is in the midst of our yearly food drive for a local food pantry!  Please consider participating as we continue to practice kindness and empathy with our students. Our students really enjoy being a part of our community and the greater good.

The year seems to be moving quickly all of a sudden!  Before we know it, winter break will be over and we will be heading into January, when administration starts to plan for the next school year!  The goal is to keep the master schedule similar to this year and look at making changes for the 2021-2022 school year when the new elementary is to open.  Right now our schedule has some barriers with our lunch facility, our playgrounds and having 4 different grades in one building. Once the 5th grade moves to the new building, we will have more flexibility in creating a master schedule.  We want our students to have more choices in Encore classes as they move up through their middle school years. We plan to start looking at this in January already!

I hope everyone has a wonderful winter break and enjoys safe, but fun times!

Traffic Reminder
Things are off to a great start and we want to say thank you for following our protocols to provide a SAFE and EFFICIENT drop-off. Thank you to those who are being alert and cautious while driving without a dog in their lap or cell phone in their hand.  When the weather is nice and temperatures are in the 50's, we have over 300 vehicles dropping off students in a 20-minute time frame. As the weather turns colder, we see more vehicles and many "first time GDS" drivers.  THANKS to those who are having their passengers exit quickly and curbside for maximum safety.  A  QUICK REVIEW  of expectations include:

1. Use the long driveway closest to the athletic fields when entering school property.
2. Pull forward as far as possible down to the fire hydrant.
3. Have students ready to exit the vehicle quickly.
4. Pull out of the drop off lane into the exit lane as soon as safely possible (a shoulder check is key).
5. We prefer cars to continue to pull forward and pedestrians to wait in the crosswalk and wait until cars pull forward and stop.

For those children with large projects that require one to park, please pull around and pull into one of the parking spots closest to the school.
The MIDDLE AREA IS ONE WAY going up from the road toward the school.  We are noticing drivers coming in and going out the wrong way.

NEW TECHNIQUE  we are asking drivers to do is the
zipper technique.  When the exit line creates a situation where the drop off cars cannot enter the exit lane.  Please pull forward down to the front of the line and merge in an alternating fashion down by the lower crosswalk.  This will let the next group of cars pull in to drop off their riders.

Thank You PTO!

A big thank you to the GDS PTO for the amazing conference dinners provided for teachers and staff.

Cold weather and Chromebooks
With frigid winter temperatures, please remember that liquid crystal display on your Chromebook can freeze and become fragile.  To help prevent cracks:  power it all the way down before heading outside, don't leave it in a cold car, and let it warm up to room temperature before turning it on.
