Airside Updates      Administrative Updates
On February 14, 1966, 54 years ago this month, the City of San Marcos officially became the owner of what is now San Marcos Regional Airport. I spent a few hours searching for historical information related to HYI and was surprised by what I learned. One fact that helped me put things in context, is only 24 years elapsed from the opening of San Marcos Army Air Field in June 1942 until President Johnson announced the "gift" to San Marcos in 1966.

When the base was under control of the War Department/Department of Defense, it operated under numerous names and was home to at least 5 critical military initiatives. The common mission link, however, was aviation-related training, operating in an environment built on safety, efficiency, and versatility.

The rich history of our Airport will continue to provide a physical foundation for future development, and as we plan for growth over the next 5-10 years, we will always be mindful of what the gift of HYI means to so many. I sometimes find myself carping about things like crumbling concrete and insufficient funding, but in an evolutionary sense, San Marcos Regional Airport is still a survivor, and a priceless asset for central Texas.

Respectfully,
