A Message from Gregory Knox Jones
This is a message I was hoping I would never need to write. On Sunday, we honored Westminster's former pastor, Jon Walton, by naming Community Hall after him. We celebrated his ministry with a reception – the first time we have held a large gathering in what is now Jon M. Walton Community Hall since the beginning of the pandemic.
Next Seven Days
TONIGHT: Griffith, McBride and Morrison Discuss Legislation
Thursday, May 19, 7 p.m. on Zoom
Come hear from State legislators about more bills of interest. Rep. Krista Griffith and Sen. Sarah McBride will discuss HB 317, the Cover All Delaware Children Act, that would direct DHSS to develop and operate a medical coverage program for children in Delaware who are not otherwise covered, including children who are not documented. Rep. Eric Morrison will discuss HB 354. It updates our whistleblower protections act so that employers cannot retaliate against employees who report things like wage theft or unsafe working conditions—that is, employer retaliation based on suspected or actual immigration or citizenship status of such employees and their family members. Hosted by Westminster’s Peace & Justice Work Group.

Empower a Woman in Guatemala!
An Echo Giving Opportunity
In our final week of our Spring Echo Giving campaign, we are empowering women in Guatemala! Empowered women build strong families and communities. Our partners in Guatemala have been working together to provide opportunities for women to gain self-confidence, build self-esteem, and improve their emotional well-being. With your financial support, they will be able to touch the lives of even more women. A gift of $50 will cover the cost for one woman to attend a six-session empowerment training course. To learn more about this initiative or make a gift, please visit www.ncpguatemala.com/empowerment. Thank you for your ongoing support!
National Poor People’s Campaign Presents Two Recent Reports on Voters and COVID
Thursday, May 26, 7 p.m. on Zoom
In the 2020 general election, 58 million — or 35% of the voting electorate — were low-income voters, cutting against common misperceptions that poor and low-income people are apathetic about politics or inconsequential to electoral outcomes. The October 2021 report, Waking the Sleeping Giant, reviews the impact of intentional efforts to engage these voters. In addition, the PPC worked with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network on the April 2022 report, A Poor People’s Pandemic: Mapping the Intersections of Poverty, Race and COVID-19. Come learn about both these reports from national representative of the PPC. Hosted by Westminster’s Peace & Justice Work Group.

Westminster Walkers for Friendship House in the Highmark Walk
Saturday, June 11, at the Wilmington Riverfront
Westminster will again have a team walking in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community; our team is walking to benefit Friendship House. The walk is in person this year, after two years of being virtual, and will be held at the Wilmington Riverfront on Saturday, June 11. It will be a great day of fun, festivity, and moderate exercise under (fingers crossed) beautiful blue skies (it was in 2019!), all to benefit non-profits in our community. We would love to have you join our team as a member or a sponsor. See our team page! Questions? Email sandyking@verizon.net.

This past Sunday, we honored Westminster’s former pastor, the Reverend Dr. Jon Walton, by naming our large downstairs space Jon M. Walton Community Hall. Jon served as Westminster’s Senior Pastor from 1985 to 2001 and during his tenure – among many other significant achievements – the congregation had an extremely successful capital fund campaign that included the construction of this Hall and other parts of our building.
