EMPOWERING A CARING COMMUNITY THAT PROMISES THE WELL-BEING OF EVERY CHILD
January 2020
Having just finished one decade and moving on to another, I am thrilled to report that all of our efforts to support children and families are humming along! We are truly positioned to make a huge difference. I believe it is our responsibility to fulfill our potential and make that impact in our community.
Because you are a member of the Promise Partners Alliance, I'd like to share with you some of the amazing things happening. I hope you'll be as inspired and excited as I am about what we're doing and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Under the guidance of our Coordinating Council, we've developed a plan to build resilience in the families and children in our area.  With our ever-expanding network of child champions, we've trained through the Lemonade for Life Program to help others see that residents cannot rewrite the beginning of their story, but can change how it ends. Our committees are collectively pooling our resources to be more effective and efficient, and others have created plans for public awareness of child abuse and neglect. We recently submitted a proposal to continue to provide Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Programs (MIECHV) to support pregnant women and families with necessary resources and skills to raise children who are healthy and ready to learn.
We've heard confirmation that there is still an unmet need that is immense. Supporting children in their infancy and beyond is not an easy task, but it does not relieve us of our duty to do so.
Moving our mission forward is an exciting undertaking, which will require a strong, collective effort.

The Facts Are Shocking

One in 10 children will be the victim of sexual abuse before their 18th birthday. Despite this startling statistic, it's a silent epidemic that people are afraid to talk about.
To prevent abuse, we have to break through the stigma and shame, and talk about how the sexual abuse of children happens. It's the only way we will be able to stop what is arguably the number one health crisis that children face today.

To Stop Child Sexual Abuse, We Must Understand It
Child sexual abuse takes many forms, and they aren't just physical. At its core, child sexual abuse is any sexual act between an adult and a minor, or between two minors when one exerts power over the other. It also includes non-contact acts such as exhibitionism, exposure to pornography, and voyeurism. Child sexual abuse can occur anywhere. It happens in places like homes, neighborhoods, schools, and youth sports environments, but it also occurs online, such as child pornography or communicating in a sexual manner by phone or internet.

How to Help Children Who are Highly Susceptible to Stress From Quartz News

Why is it that some children thrive in the worst circumstances while others are remarkably sensitive? Tom Boyce, a pediatrician and researcher at University of California San Francisco, has been asking that question for more than 40 years.

Starting in the 1970s, Boyce, like many pediatricians, observed that most kids were physically and mentally resilient-relatively immune to illness, injury, and disease. But a small group of kids seemed to accumulate a disproportionate number of health and behavior problems: from severe respiratory disease, injuries, and developmental delays, to more mental and behavioral issues, like anxiety, depression, and aggression. He could see these kids tended to come from families that faced a lot of stress or adversity, in the form of socioeconomic disadvantage or general misfortune.
..."This work is important because it highlights how individual differences in childrens' temperament can interact with their caregiving environments to give rise to very different developmental trajectories," said Charles Nelson, a pediatrics professor at Harvard Medical School, who has spent 20 years documenting what happens to infants in severe adversity. In caring and nurturing environments, orchids will thrive, he explained, whereas in others, characterized by neglect, abuse, violence and strife, they may suffer. "The context in which children are raised interacts powerfully with their inherent temperaments."
