Selected Titles for October 2020
My daughter Kimberly went to college at a Vermont art school, graduating with honors in graphic design. After college, she worked in Portland, Maine in a marketing agency for two years, working on campaigns for corporate customers. But with the COVID-19 complications, she has decided to start her own brand and web design business in Portland. Her company focuses heavily on architectural design and historic preservation; she was raised in a 1685 New England saltbox, and she was one of my first catalogers. In fact, I had cards printed up for her as "Senior Vice President of Shipping and Receiving!" So naturally, her choice for an office is a converted industrial factory in Portland. She is pictured here with me in her new office. For those of you, like me, who feel that traditional, old school marketing is less effective in this era of social distancing, perhaps a look at her website, www.kimschuyler.com, will give some idea of new ways to spread the word.
And on a sad note: last month, we lost David "Harry" Harrison, who ran the UK office of celebrated decorative plastering company Hayles and Howe. Harry was a dear friend, good customer, and early supporter of Preservation Trades Network. Here he is pictured with David Hayles, Sarah Jackson and John Lang, all PTN members. This photo was taken by PTN member Bob Zoni at the annual PTN meeting in 2019 held at Sterling Castle in Scotland. Back in the days when we had an option for international travel!
In sending out last month's book orders, I ran into an inadvertent tribute: item #26, Virginia McAlester's "Great American Houses and their Architectural Styles," came from Old House Journal. This copy had a warning label on the front dust jacket: "Patty's copy. Do not Cut." Patty is Patty Poore, editor in chief of OHJ. And Virginia, whom we lost several months ago, was held in high regard by her colleague.

Once again we have some interesting new arrivals that we are very proud to offer, including a six volume portfolio of chromolithographs that we have never seen before, and a stunning, late 18th-century treatise on Roman architecture. We also have a nice selection from the OHJ library and some good value in our sales items. Here's wishing you good health in these unsettling times. Please don't forget to vote!

Happy browsing,
Steve

Bricks and Brownstone
The New York Row House, 1783-1929 An Architectural and Social History
Lockwood, Charles
[American]. Lockwood, Charles. Bricks and Brownstone The New York Row House, 1783-1929; An Architectural and Social History. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1972. First edition. Quarto, pp. xxv, 262, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. Good; scrape on front cover.

This is the first book to examine the architectural styles of the New York row house, the way of life of the families who lived in these unique houses, and the outstanding neighborhoods of a rapidly growing and changing city. A charming and nostalgic evocation of bygone days in a town house or "brownstone" in 19th century America's richest, most powerful, and most cosmopolitan city. Withe the aid of photographs and engravings (over half of them are 100 years old), the author presents the history of the various row house architecture, and discusses and illustrates the features of the styles. An important contribution to New York's brownstone revival. Since it was from the Old House Journal library, this copy has an interesting association: OHJ's founder, Clem Labine, resided in a magnificent brownstone in Park Slope. (20082)   $40.00

General Building Repairs Dilapidations and Alterations (3 volumes)

[Restoration]. Philpott, Hugh B. (Editor). General Building Repairs Dilapidations and Alterations (3 volumes) Volume I: Brickwork, Carpentry, Wood Coverings; Volume II: Plastering, Plumbing, Painting; Volume III: Alterations, Office Work, Building Law, Index. London: Virtue & Co. Ltd, 1931. First edition. Small quarto, pp. xi, 912, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings. Original Cloth. Very Good; volumes II and II in edgeworn dust jackets.

The plan of this book is to include everything that may fairly come within the province of the general practitioner in repairs, but to exclude the work which rightly falls to the specialist. The emphasis is on doing things; theory and discussion of methods are kept within a very limited compass. Scarce; we've never offered this before. (20068)   $90.00

One of the most interesting of antiquarian studies is that which relates to the origin and purpose of the many ancient mounds and monuments found in almost every country. The Elements of Architecture: London 1624
Wotton, Henry
[History]. Wotton, Henry. The Elements of Architecture: London 1624 The English Experience, its Record in Early Printed Books published in Facsimile, Number 272. New York: Da Capo Press, 1970. Reprint. Small quarto, pp. 123, originally published in 1624. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

Henry Wotton (1568 – 1639) did not intend this book to be just another philosophical treatise for the architecture student. As the first Englishman to produce a serious work on the subject of architecture, Henry Wotton found himself in a unique and advantageous position to spread it beyond architects as he himself had not been trained as an architect. During his time in Florence, Transylvania, Poland, Germany, Rome, and later as an ambassador to the Venician Republic from 1604 to 1653, Wotton realized the incomparable advantage of including architecture in the common person’s day to day lifestyle. He sought to educate the lay English public with a summary and categorization of true architecture principles. He wrote as a critic. This was a short, easy book that might be found in any person’s sitting room. It expressed a new enthusiasm for the art of architecture in popular society. The Da Capo Press reprints are of high quality and have become quite scarce. A chance to get a nice affordable reprint of an important title. (12009)   $20.00
