The Vantage Point
Glenda Humiston
Vice President
UC Agriculture and Natural Resources
Characteristically, we partner with local groups to solve problems, and this tour provided many instances of that. For example, South Coast REC partners with UC Riverside and local growers to reduce strawberry diseases. The
UC Integrated Pest Management team
partners with the City of Irvine on weed control and glyphosate issues. To conserve water and preserve water quality, South Coast REC partners with
UC Cooperative Extension
in
San Joaquin
and
Orange
counties, and UC Davis, as well as with local production nurseries and landscape professionals. In terms of urban forestry issues, we partner with UC Irvine (UCI) to combat the shot hole borer, an invasive pest that has caused the loss of many trees on the UCI campus. And finally, in the area of urban wildlife, we partner with county, city and state agencies, as well as the impacted communities, on coyote and rodent management -- we even have an online application, the
Coyote Cacher
, to track coyote encounters in communities.
Partnership is in our DNA. To further our reach, we build partnerships based on deep and long-lasting relationships with local, state and federal governments, community-based organizations, schools, nonprofits and private industry.
We were grateful for the delicious lunch prepared by our food partners that incorporated foods grown at South Coast REC, including their well-known strawberries and avocados. Over the years South Coast REC has earned a distinguished reputation, and UC now holds several U.S. patents for strawberry and avocado variety development.
Next up, we’re getting ready to talk about UC ANR’s work and discuss issues important to UC (such as the inclusion of a 5 percent increase in UC ANR’s budget in Governor Newsom’s
proposed California 2020-21 State Budget
)
during
a series of meetings with legislators.
The Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching (CARET) Advocacy Days in Washington, D.C., take place in early March;
California Agriculture Day
in Sacramento
is
on March 18; and our own UC ANR Advocacy Day in Sacramento is on April 1. We look forward to the conversations! They are a wonderful opportunity for legislators representing both rural and urban districts to visit with us and experience first-hand
the value of working lands in the state
and
the value that UC ANR brings to the state
.
We look forward to seeing you and collaborating with you! Also, please share

In person and over the airwaves, Yang helps Hmong farmers prosper
For the past 26 years, Hmong farmers in the San Joaquin Valley have relied on
Michael Yang
, UC Cooperative Extension small farms and specialty crops agricultural assistant for Fresno County,
to help them prosper
.
The Hmong farmers grow Asian specialty crops including eggplant, lemongrass, long bean, squashes, bittermelon and moringa. Connecting Southeast Asian farmers to sell their produce at farmers markets has been a vital role for Yang, who serves as a translator and cultural interpreter between the immigrant farmers and farmers market managers.
