This Sunday in Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE)

Join us this Sunday, June 14, from 3-4 p.m. for a dog-gone good time! We'll have a parade of pets, storytelling, and other pet-themed fun. If you do not have a pet, bring your favorite stuffed animal, or create an art form of your dream pet. Following our weekly CYRE session, we'll have our first bi-weekly Junior/Senior High YOUUTH Group (for upcoming grades 7-12), from 4:00 - 6:30  p.m. Meeting links will be emailed to registered families.

In the summer months, the Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) program takes a special break from the regular fall and spring curricula. We invite UUCH members and friends to plan a virtual learning session for the children and youth. You'll be part of a teaching team as either the lead teacher or a helper, and we'll be sure to have a regular CYRE teacher there as support. Even children and youth can partner with an adult to lead a session! We invite you to sign up to lead a session that shares a special talent, hobby, skill, or learning area of yours. For more information, or to sign up,  click here

In addition, every other week beginning June 14, CYRE will be followed by a Junior/Senior High YOUUTH Group meetup from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m.

More details and a summer schedule can be found on our CYRE Facebook page and will be emailed to registered families.

If you are interested in joining us but you're not registered in the CYRE program, send an email to DRE Erin Reid . You can also click here to register your children and youth. We'd love to include you in our joyful and welcoming community of all ages.

Sincerely,

Harper Goodman
Children and Youth Religious Education Assistant
Annual Meeting This Sunday

This Sunday, June 14, is our annual Congregational Meeting. The meeting will be held immediately after the worship service. It is very important for members to attend. We need to have a sufficient number of members attend to establish a quorum.

We will only be voting on three items, but they are very important. Among the items you will be asked to approve are next year's budget, which includes the salaries for all our paid staff positions, and the slate of officers for next year's Board.

Last week the Board  sent out a separate email outlining exactly what will be covered during our annual meeting. If for some reason you did not receive this email or you can not find it, please contact Board President John Schulz, and he will make sure you get a follow-up message.

We hope to "see" you all virtually at our Annual Meeting this Sunday!

Note from the DRE

This spring has been like none we've experienced at UUCH. The CYRE staff and Committee, along with some awesome volunteers, came together to keep our program serving children, youth, and families. We started a family Facebook group, we helped on the team making our weekly multigenerational virtual worship happen, we launched UUCH's virtual CYRE and YOUUTH programs, and we joined Soulful Home, a digital family ministry resource connected to Soul Matters. And now Summer CYRE is off to a strong start, led by our wonderful CYRE Assistant, Harper Goodman.

I encourage families to engage in our weekly online summer activities. The sessions are a blend of learning about our Six UU Sources through LEGO and enjoying our UUCH tradition of activities and crafts led by church members. This series is a great way to stay connected to church community during a very volatile time. We want to be here for you!

After this week, I will be on my summer, unpaid away-time for rest, training, and preparation for the new year in CYRE. This year calls for some serious reflection, study, and action as we move through many important changes in our church, community, nation, and world. I take this time seriously and commit to using it for the deepening of my work. During June and July, Harper will be the main contact for CYRE. Profound thanks to her and the CYRE team for collaborating on a fantastic summer program.

Finally, on a personal note, I have been moved by our church's commitment to Side with Love by showing up for racial justice. I want to join my voice with others who are upholding the inherent worth and dignity of each person and who are responding to the call to work for justice, equity, and compassion in human relations. Black Lives Matter!

With love and hope as we move into change,

Erin Reid
Director of Religious Education

Music Ministry

I'm about to be on my summer leave, study, and planning time for June and July, so this Music Notes column will be my last one for a while. I'm excited about the beautiful music ministry that will be offered in online worship this summer. I have enjoyed collaborating with our Music Committee, Choir, Worship Team, UUkulele Fun Group, and other musicians to create a collection of hymns and songs for upcoming services while I am away.

Here's a teaser of music to come: Angela Arnold will continue singing "I Will Be Gentle With wyself" as this month's song of compassion! Tim and Theresa Miller (and part of their extended family) will lead "De Colores"! Choir members are volunteering to vocally lead hymns for which Kathy and I have recorded accompaniments. Our Choir, in virtual form, will sing "Draw the Circle Wide," on June 21. Many thanks to John Schulz for his coordination and sound editing, and to all the choir members who've recorded their individual parts. This is our first endeavor at being a virtual choir!

I am so grateful to all who are working to provide UUCH with music that enhances our services through the summer, allowing me the break I need to plan for the coming season, renew my spirit, research virtual options for special music and choir offerings, and attend my professional development (held online this year, of course).

Donate via Text Message

To give a plate offering to UUCH from your mobile device, text the amount (without dollar sign) to 833-559-0257, and follow the instructions.

Like our other online and mobile giving options, this is through Vanco, is secure, and has a good option for "plate" donations.

Text giving is by debit or credit card only. To give from your bank account, you can still use the UUCH website or the GivePlus+ mobile app.

Garden Social

Need a Nature Break and a UU friend? Welcome to the Socially Distanced Church Social!

Times are tough and likely to get tougher before we are together again in our building on Broadmor. But this is a chance to sit in the front yard, listen to birds, and get a tour of the budding vegetables in the garden. We hope this may be enough reward to lure people out.

LaDawn Edwards of the Care Committee is hosting a gathering every Monday at 10 a.m. (weather permitting.) Bring your lawn chair, or be willing to pull up a bucket. Please note that access to the church itself is limited during this time. Bring poetry, crafts, or just your problems to share. We'll see you there!

Technology Needs You

Using Zoom at work? Put those skills to good use!

As we adapt to our new digital form of communion, the Technology Committee is looking for volunteers to help facilitate our congregational Zoom meetings on Sunday mornings. Training will be provided, though some experience and familiarity with Zoom or other web-meeting platforms is desired.

Contact the Technology Committee to express your interest.

Little Food Pantry Needs You
Our outdoor food pantry is being heavily used, with an estimated 12 visitors per day, both families and homeless individuals. YOU can help keep it stocked by signing up on the SignUp Genius.

Items to consider buying include the following:
c anned meats, cereals, mac and cheese, pasta, peanut butter and jelly, ravioli, energy bars, fruit cups/cans, pasta and alfredo sauce, soups, packets of dried potatoes, beef stew, canned milk, instant ramen, baby wipes, peanuts, canned veggies, beanie weanies, oatmeal, onions, bananas, potatoes, etc.

Please  contact the church office if you would like to schedule a drop-off and request assistance. Or feel free to stop by and stock the pantry on your own. It would help if you checked the SignUp Genius and maybe come on off-days. There is a black storage box located just outside the door in which you can place extra pantry supplies. Thanks to everyone who has helped keep the pantry stocked for our hungry neighbors.

"Side with Love" Mask
"Side with Love" and protect yourself and others. We have found a way to have our yellow social justice slogan on a protective, cloth face mask. We thought some of you might like to have one. If you are interested in placing an order, email the church office. We will be selling them at cost, which will be $8.00 each. We will place the first order on June 12, so notify us by then if you are interested. Remind the world wherever you go that you Side with Love.

Create a Longing Jar

When people are isolated -- through migration, imprisonment, recuperation, or just bad luck -- they tend to handle it better if they keep a hopeful attitude. One good way to keep your attitude optimistic is to create a Longing Jar. You can think of it as a promise to yourself: "When all this is over I'm going to ___________." Make your idea as elaborate and specific as you can so it comes alive in your head.

For example: "When it's safe to return to having church services and activities in person again, I'm going to throw a party with a huge Slip-n-Slide on the slope near the north entrance of our church building. We will grab pool floats, suds them up with baby shampoo and turn on the sprinkler so every kid (and all the adults who want to act like kids) can slide and laugh until their sides ache too much to stand up. Then, I will pass around organic popsicles so we can just lay in the wet grass and enjoy smiling at our friends without masks on."

What are YOU longing for? Send your ideas to us here
