Area Studies Global Comics Lecture Series Wrap-up

To further develop and enhance area studies research and dialogue at Ohio State, the area studies centers of the Office of International Affairs launched the OIA Area Studies Center Conference Grant program in 2019. In its inaugural year, the committee awarded Prof. Nena Couch, head of area studies and Thompson Library Special Collections at University Libraries, for her proposal, “Area Studies Global Comics Lecture Series.” With the funding, her team launched a series of nine lectures on global comics spanning Autumn 2019 to Spring 2021 which reached more than 1,000 attendees from both Ohio State and 85 additional academic institutions, five cultural institutions, four K-12 schools, as well as other scholars, artists, government employees and community members.

2021 Américas Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature Winners

The 2021 Winners of the Américas Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature have been announced!

This year’s award goes to Digging for Words: José Alberto Gutiérrez and the Library He Built (Schwartz & Wade, 2020), written by Angela Burke Kunkel and illustrated by Paula Escobar, and Land of the Cranes (Scholastic Press, 2020), written by Aida Salazar.

Brazil Gateway Webinar Series: Graduate Student Experience

Join the Brazil Gateway for their second webinar in this summer's series on June 16, 2021 (5 PM) to hear from current graduate student, Karina Ribeiro, who will speak about her experience as a student and as a graduate assistant. She will also talk about the different student organizations she was involved with, as well as her internship and her offer to come back to the United States for work. She will share what it is like to work abroad.

Race, Racism, and Antiracism in the U.S. and Brazil

The Center for Latin American Studies is excited to co-sponsor an upcoming webinar hosted by the Columbus Council on World Affairs.

Antonio Bacelar da Silva’s forthcoming book, Between Brown and Black: Antiracist Activism among Afro-Brazilians, addresses racial inequity by exploring three areas: (1) black consciousness classes, (2) the racial quotas system, and (3) electoral politics. On June 22, 2021 Dr. Bacelar da Silva will discuss the similarities between the racial equity movements in Brazil and the United States and how we can learn from one another.

CLAS at Stanford looking for Student Services Officer

The Center for Latin American Studies at Stanford University is seeking candidates with a Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience, for their Student Services Officer position.

This position reports to the Center’s Associate Director and is the primary point of contact for graduate and undergraduate students participating in the Center’s degree programs. They are responsible for providing accurate academic and program information to current and prospective students, maintaining student and program data in Stanford administrative systems, monitoring degree progress, being a resource for accessing SIRIS database environments, and assisting with a variety of student fellowships and grants.
