Volunteer Corner
Volunteers from W. L. Gore
For those of you who travel the Jack A. Markell Trail, or any trail, the sight of trash is likely annoying. Like why are there people still littering in this world?! A discussion for another day, but we are grateful to a great group of W. L. Gore employees who late last month, in honor of Earth Day, volunteered to clean up the JAM Trail. They did a great job, uncovering items that had been buried for years. Thank you Gore Team!
Upcoming volunteer needs... Are you someone who has an interest in Delaware Greenways' work and would be comfortable interacting with people, sharing information at community events? If so, we need you for Open Streets!...see below.

 Community Conversations
Thank you to Robert Johnston and the Del-Mar-Va Council of the Boy Scouts of America for giving DGI Board Member, Portia Yarborough, and Executive Director Mary Roth the opportunity to attend the BSA Leaders, April Council meeting.  DGI presented opportunities for engagement with the Scouts, as we continue our work, Connecting YOU to the Outdoors.  We’re encouraged by the perspectives and ideas shared by leaders during the breakout sessions, and hope one day to see a scout challenge developed along one of the many trails and Byways throughout the State.

Adam Crosby, GIS Community Outreach Coordinator, joined Delaware Commute Solutions for their Info Series (#30) discussion, in honor of Bike Month. Adam gave an overview of our work and presented details of Delaware Greenways involvement in Trail and Byway projects throughout the State. We were happy to be a part of these great sessions provided by DECS!

Concord Pike (US 202) Monitoring Committee Meeting
As a member of the Concord Pike Monitoring Committee, Delaware Greenways representatives participated in the meeting held on May 11th. The Committee’s role is to guide and fulfill the recommendations of the Concord Pike Master Plan, which established a shared vision for the transportation and land use of the corridor.

As work continues next steps – priorities/focus areas:

  • Bike-Pedestrian Connectivity
  • Intersection Improvements (Silverside Rd, Mt. Lebanon Road)
  • Pedestrian Safety
  • Signal Coordination
  • Wayfinding Signage
Meeting presentations and recordings can be found at http://www.wilmapco.org/202-2/

The Committee will meet again in Fall 2022. Meetings are public, and we encourage you to attend.
Five Points Working Group Meeting
Mary Roth, a member of the Five Points Working Group in Lewes, attended the April 25th meeting at Cape Henlopen High School. Phase 2 of the Five Points Transportation Study focuses on implementation which involves development and execution of studies, projects and plans based on the working groups 78 recommendations compiled during Phase 1 of the study.

We encourage you to visit the website and attend future meetings. Stay informed at Five Points Transportation Study

A public meeting from May 16th is being rescheduled – keep your eyes open for the new date and time.

The Future Trails of Northern Delaware Coalition met earlier this month to discuss projects updates, share experiences of recent successes, and learn about two projects from the Coalition members of Kennett Trails Alliance and Millcreek Neighbors for Safer Pathways. The virtual meeting was recorded for others to share and review (link below) as we move forward on Coalition projects.
We held a discussion regarding the rebranding of the Future Trails of Northern Delaware Coalition and Trail Network to further expand the reach of the Coalition to local communities, current and potential trail users, and help people relate more closely to the growing network of trails north of the C & D Canal. We look forward to continuing to work with the Coalition’s members and supporters and to report back on progress at our next meeting in October 2022.
