Learn about Sustainable Living at Library Workshop

Sedona Public Library's environmental program series, "Our Earth, Our Habitat, Our Home," continues in March with an interactive workshop led by Darcy Hitchcock of the Sustainability Alliance. The program, which is free and open to the public, begins at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, in the community room.
At the workshop, participants will identify unsustainable choices we often make. Hitchcock will suggest practical actions that can be taken now to make a real difference. She will talk about the Sustainability Alliance and explain how organizations can become certified in its sustainability program.
To encourage sustainability and in preparation for Earth Month in April, the Library will be collecting handheld electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, and e-readers) for recycling. Please drop off these items at the reference desk at the main library or at Sedona Public Library in the Village. The last day to drop off your items will be Tuesday, March 31.
 The sustainability workshop and electronics recycling campaign are part of the Library's "Our Earth, Our Habitat, Our Home" initiative, a project supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Author Talks at the Library

from 6 to 8 p.m. in the community room, hear writers Pam Houston and Ginger Gaffney discuss their work. Pam is the author of "
De
ep Creek," "Cowboys Are My Weakness," and other books. Ginger's new release is the memoir "Half-Broke," which was selected as a New York Times Editor's Pick.

Local author
Diane Phelps Budden
will discuss her latest work, "Dear Hubby of Mine: Home Front Wives in World War II," on
Wednesday, March 25
, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Quiet Study. The book tells her parents' story through the letters they exchanged while they were separated by the war. The author will sell her books at the event.
On Thursday, March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the community room, political psychologist and women's issues expert Martha Burk will discuss her book "Your Voice, Your Vote: The Savvy Woman's Guide to Politics, Power, and the Change We Need." Written from a nonpartisan viewpoint, the book lays out the records and platforms of both the Democratic and Republican parties on issues of importance to women, such as health care, pay equity, reproductive rights, and Social Security. The Literate Lizard bookstore will offer books for sale at the event.

Hidden Messages in Water Presentation

 On Thursday, March 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the community room,
Michiko Hayashi will speak about the work of Dr. Masaru Emoto, author of the bestselling book "The Hidden Messages in Water."
Hayashi was Dr. Emoto's personal assistant and has continued his work since his death. Hayashi will be joined by metaphysical radio host Ted Mahr,
who will give a presentation about his experiences as a psychic.

online events calendar to view the monthly schedule of programs at the Library, including these upcoming events:
- NEW! Sedona Pen and Brush: Discuss the ins and outs of publishing with fellow authors and illustrators at meetings of Sedona Pen and Brush. All local writers and illustrators (both traditionally published and self-published) are welcome to join! The group's first meeting is on Monday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to noon in the community room.
- Conversational English Group: This group, open to all who want to practice speaking English with others, is held every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Green Room.
- Cryptocurrency Group: Interested in investing in cryptocurrencies? You're invited to attend meetings of the Crypto group every Monday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Quiet Study.
- Conversational French Group: The group will meet on Tuesday, March 3 and 17, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Quiet Study. Intended for intermediate-level speakers, the group provides an opportunity for those with some prior knowledge to practice their French.
- Conversational Spanish Group: The group meets every Wednesday evening, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
- ESL Class: The English as a Second Language group meets every Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.
- Drum Circle: Join us for an interactive community drum and dance circle on Friday, March 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the community room. We will have extra drums available, and drummers of all experience levels, including beginners, are welcome at this free event!
- Socrates Cafe: The group, a forum for discussing fundamental human questions, will meet on Monday, March 9, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in the Quiet Study. Please register at the reference desk for this free program.
- Book Club: Join us at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, in the Quiet Study for a discussion of "The Tiger's Wife," by Téa Obreht.
- Coffee with a Veteran: Everyone is invited to join us on Friday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to noon in the community room. Come share coffee and donuts and camaraderie with area veterans. Program to be determined.
- Saturday Crafternoon: At this month's program, on Saturday, March 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the community room, make friendship bracelets using cardboard discs and colorful thread. All supplies will be provided free of charge, and all are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
- American Creed Community Conversations: Join us for our monthly series of respectful discussions centered on finding our common ground and celebrating our shared beliefs. The next conversation will be held on Tuesday, March 17, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in the fireplace area. The topic will be "What Is Your American Creed?" Led by Paul Friedman, American Creed Community Conversations are free and open to the public.
- Nonfiction Book Club: The group will meet on Tuesday, March 24, at 4 p.m. in the Quiet Study. This month's selection is "Behind the Beautiful Forevers," by Katherine Boo.
- Poetry & Prose: Join us on Friday, March 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the community room, for a show featuring one-act plays by Jesse Sensibar, Kate Hawkes, and Jim Bishop. Hosted by Gary Every, Poetry & Prose events are free and open to the public.

Tax Help Continues in March
|
The AARP's free Tax-Aide service is very popular again this year, and will run through Tuesday, April 14. Volunteers are available in the community room on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Tax-Aide service is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

School Break Fun at the Library!
|
Youngsters are invited to spend time at Sedona Public Library during spring break, March 9 through 13. Kids can drop by anytime during the week to read or create at the crafts table.
Other activities include:
- Monday, March 9: Dazzle the therapy dog will be a reading buddy for children who would like to share a story in the Quiet Study room from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Children ages 6 and up will find mechanical and tech activities, and a few "RattleBots," in the community room from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, March 11: The movie Dora and the Lost City of Gold plays in the community room starting at 12:30 p.m. We'll have popcorn too!
- Thursday, March 12: Chess club with Dr. B. from 3:45 to 5 p.m.
- Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings, drop by for story time!

Five popular new movies are on the Flicker Shack schedule in March. Please join us for free screenings on Monday nights at 6 p.m. in the community room.
- March 2: Knives Out, a modern-day thriller that pays tribute to old-fashioned murder mysteries.
- March 9: Jojo Rabbit, a World War II satire that follows the relationship between a lonely German boy and a Jewish girl hiding in his attic. Best Picture nominee!

 March 16: Dark Waters, the real-life story of a tenacious attorney who uncovers a dark secret about one of the world's largest corporations.

- Arizona Humanities Speaker Program: Join
us for "The Vanishing Trading Posts," on
Wednesday, March 11,
at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene, 55 Rojo Drive.
Speakers Chris Glenn and Sandy Sunseri will present a snapshot of a way of life in the Southwest that has disappeared. In a little over one hundred years after they were founded, trading posts in the Four Corners faded away. Stories of trading-family dynasties, as well as the cross-cultural exchange between Anglos and Native communities, are discussed against a background of the social and economic changes that resulted in the posts' demise.
This program is free and open to the public. Donations are always welcome.

 Community Book Discussion: Participate in the book discussion of "Wings of a Flying Tiger," by local author Iris Yang, on Tuesday, March 31, at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds Retirement Community, 405 Jacks Canyon Road. You are in for a treat because the author will be attending our book discussion to answer questions! The book is available from the Yavapai Library Network.
