EXECUTIVE FUNCTION
By Rev. Dr. Arthur Chang

Executive function is our ability to control our thoughts, emotions and actions to achieve goals. Executive function is mental; it includes memory, flexible thinking and self-control.

Those wishing to improve their prosperity or health need executive function. We all use executive function every day. We could not exist without it. However, as we move toward greater goals, our new ways of being in the world will come into conflict with habits we already have. These too were formed by executive function for different goals contrary to our new goals.

Habits are how the Law of Mind in Action, embodied in us, works. For example, if you were learning to drive, or ride a bicycle for the first time, you may remember how intensely conscious your thoughts were initially, for you to accomplish that goal. It was almost 100% executive function. You were exhausted after each session. The same condition exists when learning to play a musical instrument. As you embody the skills and knowledge necessary, they form a habit until you no longer have to think consciously about the task. You just do it unconsciously.

Generally, we would prefer waving a wand, saying a single prayer, or uttering a magical word that caused our desires to appear in our lives. Unfortunately, this is not how life works. Poor people do not get rich by such means.  One may justifiably protest that Jesus and the prophets in the Bible must have been exceptions. Some may even claim some people today claim astounding accomplishments instantaneously because they had faith. That is beyond my scope of knowledge.

No one can deny anecdotal stories abound. However, if you do believe these stories are literal and set out to prove them that may be a worthwhile goal. However, the power of the mind is definitely available to those who are willing to use their executive function in a systematic way and over a span of time to experience marvelous achievements.

Executive function requires our use, thought, emotion and action to set in place new habits for increasing prosperity and better health. For example, we find ways for implementing creative ideas in our current work and level of income for increasing the flow of money into our lives. The mental aspect will include prayer. However, we may have to include delayed gratification too so we can make a business, write a novel, or become good at sales.

On the matter of becoming healthier, we may have to stop eating as much sweets as we do. We may argue, why can we not pray and still eat sweets? By researching health science, you will soon discover, we cannot make up our own way contrary to the laws of our bodies. Spiritual laws and physical laws are one. They are not magic, though, after we have applied executive function, things will seem as magical as they do in the Bible. The difference may be an increase of time and effort.

The wisdom of improvement is, if you can do it on faith alone, then do. However, if that is not working for you, realize that faith works through executive function also. Faith is not just a thought deeply felt. It is also the discipline of how to be in the world, governed by laws in the areas where you are attempting to demonstrate a greater good. As we do not stop breathing after one breath, we should not stop doing what it takes to realize the dreams we desire. Executive function is available for you to get this done.

We live in a Universe of Love as well as a Universe of Law. One is the complement of the other—the Universe of Love pulsating with feeling, with emotion, and the Universe of Law, the Executor of all feeling and all emotion. In this lesson on healing, then, let us remember that back of the man which we see is the Divine Image. There is a Perfect Concept of Man, held in the Mind of the Universe as an already accomplished fact, but man is subject to the law of his own choice.
