"Telling True Stories"
Marking Black History Month requires more of us than celebrating a few African Americans who played important roles in our country's story.   It also calls us to learn more of the social and political history that is the legacy of slavery, and that continues to shape American culture.   There is much to learn, including from Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s remarkable 2019 book  Stony the Road.

"Love & Money"
A look at how two very powerful forces in life - love and money - can pull us in opposite directions in our lives. Can minds and hearts be changed about the purpose of wealth in our world? How the voices of people of color are broadening our vision.

Host a Cottage Party!
Click to learn more about the First UU Society of Burlington
We are looking for people in the following towns to host a Cottage Party  in their
home:  Colchester, Essex, Shelburne, South Burlington, and Williston. We also need folks who are willing to attend these
parties as helpers and facilitators. Cottage  Parties are fun, small events where you will have an opportunity to get to know your neighboring UUs a bit better!  You decide on the date of the party and how many people you can fit in your home.

But what do you do once everyone is there? No worries, the Stewardship Team is offering two workshops on
Saturday, February 8, here at the UU, one at 9 a.m. (WITH CHILDCARE), and one at 1 p.m. Anyone can attend one of the sessions. We don't need RSVPs but it's great if you can let us know you'd like to come. If you need childcare, we DO need to know if you're planning to come. Please email  [email protected] (with number and ages of children if you need childcare).

So here is your opportunity to connect with fellow members and friends! Come to a workshop! Come to a
Cottage Party! Host a Cottage Party! Facilitate a
Cottage   Party! With all of us participating we can really MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

"Staying Connected"
Linda Graves

The Membership Team leads classes on the first Sunday of every month from 8:30-9:55 a.m. for newcomers who wish to learn more about the Unitarian Universalist faith as a whole and First UU Society in particular. These classes generate lively discussion and often there is not enough time to fully explore all the questions and comments that arise.

To that end, the Team is offering an informal meet-up session called "Staying Connected" on Sunday, February 9 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Dix Room (downstairs) for anyone who is interested in further exploration of some of these questions (or any new ones you might have) as well as an opportunity to connect in an informal way with other newcomers. It is not necessary to have attended any of the newcomer classes to come to this event. Rev. Tricia and members of the Team will be there to welcome you warmly; refreshments will be provided. No sign-up necessary. Please join us!

Valentine's Day Babysitting
Gabriel Ely, Youth Ministry Coordinator

Wishing you could go on a kid-free date for Valentine's Day without breaking the bank? You're in luck! The Yuuth Group is hosting our annual parents' night out on Friday, February 14. We'll provide dinner, play games, activities, and watch a movie.

5:30-9 p.m.
$5 fee + $5/hour = $22.50 per kid if they stay the whole 3.5 hours.
FUUSB members and nonmembers welcome

Game Night
Erika Reif, Director of Lifespan Faith Development

Saturday February 15, 5-8 p.m.
Come for t his truly muti-gen event. It looks a bit different every time we have one. All ages are welcome and it's a great way to get to know people in the congregation, with whom you might not cross paths otherwise.

A "no-stress" potluck, you can wow us with your culinary skills or pick up a loaf of bread and a tub of hummus. The point is to have fun together and not go hungry. We'll have decaf and tea available, plates and utensils.

We have lots of games at the ready, but feel free to bring the one you want to play. People have done jigsaw puzzles, played round-robin pingpong, Dominoes, Ticket to Ride, Rumikub, Azul, group card games, pictionary. There are generally several things happening at once. It's okay to come with a group of friends and the intention to play a particular game. You can bring children and play with them or have them play with childcare staff while you try out a game with an older crowd. Make it what you want!

Come for a little bit or the whole time; bring all your ages (and your inner child, too).

Camp Unirondack Information Session
Sunday, February 16 , 11 a.m. Meet Elena Woughter, a former camper, counselor, and now representative of the extraordinary summer camp for families, children, and youth in the beautiful western Adirondack Park. If you are considering expanding your family's UU horizons beyond FUUSB, this is a chance for you to learn more. Elena will join us for worship and will be available during coffee hour, in the Community Room. All are welcome! Did you know that Unirondack hosts adult retreats and programming, too? If you have attended Unirondack, please join Elena. It's always great to hear from Unirondack families directly. S'mores will be provided!

Climate Justice Team - Kickoff Meeting
Jud Lawrie

A Climate Justice Team at First UU has been proposed. This (rescheduled) meeting will discuss the climate emergency facing us, the concept of climate justice, and the proposal to form a Climate Justice Team. A short film will be shown featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, UN Messenger of Peace for Climate, addressing the UN and describing his deep fear about the climate crisis. As he says toward the end of the film: " Now is the time for bold, unprecedented action."

Sunday, February 1611:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Please come and join us. Rev. Tricia and Zoe Hart plan to stop in and say a few words. If you have any questions, contact Jud Lawrie at  [email protected].

Spirit Play Stewards
Shine your light and Test Drive service on our Faith Development Team:

If you think you might be interested in being a steward in our Spirit Play classrooms next fall 2020, this is a perfect opportunity to have a trial run with little commitment and great reward. We are looking to fill two spots on Sunday, March 8 and April 5 in our Spirit Play 2 classroom. This is a supporting role and requires no formal training. The only requirement is a love of story and a desire to serve with our children. Please contact Erika for more details: [email protected]

From the Care Network
Because of your generosity and thoughtfulness, over 50 meals and an untold number of gift cards have been bestowed on two members, Miriam (Tammy) Strauss and Rebecca Anderson, who are undergoing cancer treatment. How wonderful you are and how lovely that together, you support and take care of each other. On behalf of the Care Network, thank you so much.

There are still plenty of opportunities to help. I know you will continue to show your kindness. Click below to sign up for a Mealtrain. And remember, pre-made dinners from the grocery store deli and gift cards are also very welcome.

On behalf of the Care Network, thank you for all you do.
