HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
HELP GIVE HOPE!!
40 years!!
(1981 to 2021)
Hard to believe it’s been 40 years! A success story made possible by a shared vision and purpose of an ever-expanding circle of loyal friends. Amazingly, for the most part, this army of supporters has remained intact across four decades. Forty years ago the concept for Help Give Hope was hatched in a bar (where else?) and who could have imagined it would survive four decades and touch the lives of tens of thousands of children-in-need!
Beginning in our April newsletter and throughout the remainder of 2021, we’ll celebrate this milestone with stories and pictures from across those 40 years. Plus a few surprises. Please let us know if you would like to contribute a story or pictures from our earlier years. Contact Michael Brady (mgrady@helpgivehope.org).
In this newsletter HGH will also pay homage to Mitch Wilson, one of our longest serving and most beloved volunteers as he takes a well-earned retirement from the corporate world (but not HGH!).
And we’ll profile our various 2021 fundraising and charity events. Please note: both The Longest Table and Arris Pizza/Help Give Hope Charity Golf Tournament have moved to September, while our numerous garage sales will take place as usual throughout the year.

What a difference a year makes. This time last year we were creating a crisis plan of action on how to tackle something we knew little about. We are now beginning to see a faint light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel. Vaccine availability, restrictions slowly are being lifted and a third vaccine has been approved as I write this! Where we don’t want to relax all safety precautions, I am already planning on the quilt I will have made with all my fun masks I have collected. Poverty and unexpected financial challenges won’t have a vaccine, it will always loom close for many families. We are so lucky at HGH to have the support we do. We have a very generous base of donors and volunteers who help and allow us to do so many things. We are still helping so many families navigate this difficult journey.
I am frequently asked about growing larger. I am not really sure that is what we want. We want to continue to help as many families as we can, however, staying small and efficient is really ideal for us. This does not mean we will not increase the number of families we serve, it means we continue to do what we do best and create merit. We are able to help so many famiiles by doing this. We are a staff of four and often discuss what direction we should go to help a family. What is best for them and a beneficial choice for the organization. Covid has created a lot of different and difficult situations for many families. Job loss, virtual learning can create unbelieveable stress. By staying small and efficient, we are able to spend time and help families choose the best path for them. Help Give Hope does not live in a black and white world. We thrive on the ability to think outside the box and act on it with success for everyone. When we are assisting a parent with a delinquent utility bill, not only are we helping them, we are helping the landlord, the utility company and the children who will now be able to take a bath because the utilities have been paid. This is what makes us unique and effective.
We are prepping for our series of garage sales as we speak. We are overflowing with merchandise and look forward to another successful series of sales. We have moved our “events” to September to hopefully have greater ability and freedom for success and appreciate all the support you give us. We will continue to help those families in need and provide the most effecient and effective path for all. As always, thanks for all you do for us at Help Give Hope.

THE LONGEST TABLE
September 2, 2021
Celebrate 40 years of Help Give Hope supporting families in need! The Longest Table is a dining event, benefitting Help Give Hope, that showcases prix fixe menus paired with custom beverages from the area's finest restaurants. The focus is celebrating Help Give Hope’s 40th anniversary with fine food and libations.
This is much more than a “rubber chicken” fundraiser. Restaurants that participate work to create a memorable dining experience without bidding or live auctions. We ask for your support by being a sponsor and/or attendee. Be a “Main Course” sponsor, providing Christmas for at least 5 families and receive 6 dinner tickets. As an “Appetizer” sponsor you will provide funding for more than 2 families and receive 4 dinner tickets. “Cocktail” sponsors support at least 1 family and receive 2 dinner tickets. As an attendee you provide funding to support Help Give Hope’s mission to support children and families.
If questions or interest in being a sponsor for this event, please contact Michael Brady, Help Give Hope Development Director, 417-766-6165 mbrady@helpgivehope.org

GARAGE SALE SEASON IS ALMOST HERE!
And we’re in full ‘pick-up mode!
Our warehouse (2809 N. Cedarbrook) is already filling fast with a vast assortment of merchandise. The weather has played havoc with our volunteers who are needed to sort, price and place thousands of donated items but our first Friends and Family sell is not until April 10th. By then, the warehouse should be packed! Here are the dates of this years’ garage sales:
Friends and Family Sales
Saturday, April 10th 9am - 1pm
Saturday, May 8th 9am - 1pm
Saturday, July 10th 9am - 1pm
Saturday, August 7th 9am - 1pm
Major Sales - 9am till 4pm both days
Friday & Saturday, June 11th & 12th 8am - 4pm
Friday & Saturday, September 10th & 11th 8am - 4pm
We are accepting garage sale items…just call Murray at 417-209-7027 to arrange pickup. We truly appreciate any and all donations but we have learned over the years we simply cannot sell or use certain items so please note what we cannot accept…
· Mattresses (for legal reasons)
· Office desks
· Entertainment centers
· Box TVs (flat screens are fine)
· China cabinets
· IMPORTANT: We love donations of appliances but please be accurate with their condition. Most appliances are given to families in need. There is nothing worse than giving an appliance that does not work properly.
We do not wish to appear presumptuous and we sincerely appreciate each and every donation but when we are unable to sell an item, often we must pay to have it removed. We just wish to be more efficient and cost effective.

CONGRATULATIONS MITCH WILSON!
I began dating my future wife Phyllis Wilson in 1986 and soon met her family including brother Mitch. HGH was in its infancy in those years and strictly a Christmas charity. But each year we seemed to double the number of adopted families and soon needed help. Mitch heard of our need, called to ask if he could help and he’s not missed a Christmas since! That’s right, 30+ years! Of course, HGH has changed over the years but Mitch’s dedication and passion have not. Want to talk dedicated? Mitch takes one to two weeks of precious vacation time annually to volunteer with HGH. He is there for every step of our nearly four month long annual Christmas project (Sept. to Dec.). He also plays in and volunteers at our annual charity golf tourney and never misses The Longest Table.
More importantly, he’s part of our HGH family. To know Mitch is to love Mitch. He gives selflessly of himself, out-works nearly everyone and always with a ready smile on his face. Truly, we could not imagine HGH without Mitch. That is why we’re very happy and excited to help Mitch celebrate an extremely important milestone in his life…his retirement from Baird, Kurtz & Dobson effective March 31, 2021!! After a 24 year career within the IT department of BKD, Mitch is ready for the next chapter in his life.
What is that next chapter? Well, it’s safe to assume it will involve Debbie, his wife of nearly 43 years, their daughters Jennifer Buchanan (husband Rob and children Selah, Cana and Elim) and Melissa Stief (husband Jeff and daughter Maisie). You see, Mitch and Debbie are Grandparents extraordinaire! Ask Mitch his plans for retirement and his first response is “be more available for the grandkids!”. Of course, as much as they love those grandkids, Mitch and Debbie do plan to travel more and spend time at the lake (probably with the grandkids - 😊). Bet a lake home and boat are also in their future (and a few more rounds of golf?)
Mitch has been my brother-in-law for nearly 30 years’ and I’ve met few men of greater integrity, spirit, kindness and compassion. A true gentlemen in every sense of the word. Spend a little time around him and you find yourself saying “I want to be like Mitch!”.
Help Give Hope is proud to congratulate Mitch on his well-deserved retirement. Enjoy, be healthy, safe and love on those grandkids! But one word of warning…you are allowed to retire from corporate America but you are NOT allowed to retire from Help Give Hope!
Wade
(Murray asked I write this tribute and I wholeheartedly agreed!)

ARRIS PIZZA/HELP GIVE HOPE
CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT
Monday, September 20th, 2021 Twin Oaks CC, 12:30 shotgun start, 3-person scramble.
Overwhelmingly, our players voted to move the event to September. There is no such thing as a guarantee, but traditionally mid to late September is the best golfing weather of the year. So golfers, mark your calendars for Monday, September 20th!
