India Day 2017: Fun Event on a Beautiful Day at the Hatch Shell

IAGB’s India Day 2017 celebration on August 20 marked the 70th anniversary of India's Independence at the Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston. The theme was “Unity in Diversity.” 

Guests enjoyed colorful performances of music and dance, checked out a variety of vendors and enjoyed Indian food.

Community Youth Excellence Awards
The 2017 Community Youth Excellence Awards were presented to Neil Pandit and Rithika Neti.

Neil, a Burlington High School rising junior and High Honor Roll student, is an enthusiastic volunteer photographer for many nonprofit organizations, including IAGB, Indian Americans for Burlington, Saheli and local public libraries. He also dedicates his time at the local hospital, community and school events. He is a Silver Key award recipient from the Boston Globe and received India New England’s  20 Under 20 Stars 2016 award.

Rithika is a rising senior at Sharon High School. A delegate to the UN Youth Assembly, she is passionate about empowering youth to work toward the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Rithika is a youth ambassador for Akshaya Patra. She also began a club in high school that communicates with the Zabuli Education Center, an all-girls school in Afghanistan.

Elections for 2017-2019 IAGB Executive Committee Coming Up
The 2015-2017 India Association of Greater Boston Executive Committee ended its tenure this month. Look for an upcoming announcement of the general body meeting and election of directors for the new 2017-2019 EC that will comprise of four officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) and 15 directors.

SETU Presents Vijay Tendulkar’s Kamala: September 16 and 17
Stage Ensemble Theater Unit  (SETU) will stage two shows of prominent Indian playwright  Vijay Tendulkar’s  play "Kamala," in English, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 16; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 17, at Belmont Town Hall Theater, 455 Concord Avenue, Belmont, MA. Each presentation will also feature a skit of gossiping wedding invitees from different social strata, embedded with popular Bollywood songs and dances. IAGB is partnering with SETU to raise funds for Ekal, a non-profit organization that provides basic education for rural and tribal people in India.

Tendulkar highlights the plight of underprivileged rural and tribal people in India. In so doing, he blends urban sophistication and rural simplicity and draws parallels with the oppression that is prevalent across male-dominated Indian society.

SETU
SETU is a non-profit English theater group in the Boston area. It strives to build bridges between Indian and Western cultures through the medium of theater. It also attempts to highlight India's social, political and economic scenarios from the past and the present.

Consulate General Offers Special Services in NY: September 16
The Consulate General of India, New York, will be open on Saturday, September 16, from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in order to provide special Consular Services.

Indian Passport holders/US Passport holders of Indian origin, who have applied for or are in the process of applying for Indian Passports/Visa/OCI Cards, may go to the Consulate and get their applications/supporting documents pre-approved before submitting to CKGS. Applications with all supporting documents would be examined in the Consulate and approved for submission to CKGS.

Services will be rendered only to applicants who pre-registered with the Consulate by listing the details of their applications via email by September 10.
