House of Bishops' Meeting |
I returned on Tuesday afternoon from the first in-person House of Bishops’ meeting (held at Camp Allen, Texas) in two years. Please share the attached Pastoral Letter, Resolution and Statement from the Bishops with all congregations in the Diocese of Hawaiʻi and the Convocation of the Episcopal Church in Micronesia. They can be shared as bulletin inserts or electronically. I want to be sure that they have the broadest distribution possible with Episcopalians.

The Reverend Ernesto "Jar" Pasalo |
The Reverend Ernesto “Jar” Pasalo resigned as the Youth and Young Adult Missioner for the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii effective March 4, 2022. Jar has received special admittance into the chaplaincy residency program of Pacific Health Ministry necessitating an abrupt leave taking. At this time, he plans on continuing as vicar of St. Matthew’s Church, Waimanalo.
Jar’s ministry with young people was distinctly impacted by the pandemic as gathering was made impossible. I deeply appreciate his dedication to the ministry of the Diocese and his concern for God’s people. This move to explore chaplaincy and this important form of pastoral care fulfills a long time goal for Jar in a meaningful way.
I will ask the Youth and Young Adult Task Force for advice on the future direction of this ministry and the staff position.

Annual Chrism Mass & Spring Training 2022
|
8 days left until Chrism Mass & Spring Training! Join us IN PERSON for the Diocese's annual Chrism Mass & Spring Training event being held at The Cathedral of St. Andrew in Honolulu. This event is open to all clergy and lay*. The theme for Spring Training 2022 is from our Diocesan “Anthem” commissioned from Joe Camacho: "Pili Pa’a - We stand as one"
The day will begin at 9:00 AM with a Chrism Mass and Eucharist that will include the Renewal of Clergy Vows and Renewal of Baptismal Vows. Immediately following the mass will be Spring Training 2022 sponsored by the Racial Reconciliation Task Force, and will include a variety of workshops. *Note: REGISTRATION IS OPEN TO EVERYONE! Due to budget realities, we can only cover the inter-island airfare for clergy and one lay person per neighbor island congregation. However, if any neighbor island congregation currently has no clergy, or the priest is unable to attend, please contact the Rev. Cn. Sandy Graham HERE and the Diocese will cover the cost for two interested lay people to attend.

Lent Madness Update: Queen Emma advances to the Saintly Sixteen |
Lent Madness fans have been lighting up the internet with votes for their favorite saints in the climb for the Golden Halo! Each year 32 saints recognized by The Episcopal Church are selected. Based loosely on the NCAA basketball tournament of a similar name, this online devotion pits saints against one another in a bracket as voters choose their favorites throughout this penitential season. Lent Madness is heating up and in the match for the Golden Halo, our own Queen Emma defeated Hugh of Lincoln with nearly 65% of the vote! She advances into the second round of the Saintly Sixteen, where she will face José Hernández on Thursday, March 31. Mark your calendars and be sure to vote on the Lent Madness website HERE!

Applications are now being accepted for two Diocesan Scholarship funds that are available to students for the 2022-2023 school year.

Bishop's Scholarship Fund - Kindergarten to grade 12 students entering an Episcopal Church-related school in the Diocese of Hawai'i for the first time

The Chang Clergy Children's Scholarship Fund - Children of clergy under the age of 24 - Clergy must be canonically resident and domiciled in the Diocese of Hawai'i

Cathedral of St. Andrew: Choral Evensong for the Feast of Annunciation |
The Cathedral of St. Andrew will host an in-person and online Choral Evensong for the Feast of the Annunciation on Sunday, March 27, at 5:30pm. Prayers will be raised for peace and ending of war, including choral works by Ukrainian composers, as well as Bernard Rose, George Dyson, and Franz Bieble.
All offerings collected and received will be donated to the Episcopal Relief and Development in support of their efforts in providing humanitarian aid in response to the crisis in Ukraine.

Car wash to support Gifted and Physically Disabled Scouts (GAPS) at St. Christopher's |
On Saturday, March 26, 8am-2pm a car wash will take place at St. Christopher's Kailua to support GAPS. GAPS supports Scouts with disabilities, leaders, and families by providing training, resources, and access. If you are on the windward side of Oʻahu, come by and get your car washed for a good cause! Pay by donation.

All Saints' Episcopal Church in Kapa'a continues to partner with Project Vision in offering mobile hot showers to houseless guests every Thursday from 11:00am-3:00pm. Additionally, free sack lunches are offered every 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. All Saints' welcomes volunteers and organizations to help with this effort. READ MORE

Trinity's Outreach for A Cup of Cold Water Maui |
Trinity's Weekly Outreach for A Cup of Cold Water's Ministry to Maui's houseless produced 80 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, in record time. The effort included volunteers, comprised of new visitors, local church members, and tourists! A huge mahalo is especially due to Susie Davis who is overseeing the coordination and execution of starting this ministry!
Want to help make sandwiches for the unsheltered community?Come to Trinity Episcopal Church-by-the-Sea for an outdoor Sunday Service at 9am then join the volunteers in Kilolani Hall afterward at 10:15am!

St. John's Honors Lynette McCrary for Her 25 Year Ministry |
Lynette McCrary was honored on Sunday for her 25 year ministry in the St. John's Nursery. Even though she is unable to work in the nursery on Sunday mornings she is still working behind the scenes! She's received a framed letter from the Bishop thanking her for her service.

1st Battalion 12th Marines Lends a Helping Hand to St. James' Parish
Marines and Sailors on deployment in Pohakuloa from 1st Battalion 12th Marines in Kaneohe spent the day working with the parishioners of St. James'. They painted two ramps and trimmed faux olive hedges and trees around the campus. A special mahalo to Sexton Frankie Pang Jr., Warden Ian Hersey, and to parishioners Phil Conley, David Greenwell, and Gerrit Keator for their assistance!

Madeleine Albright, first female secretary of state and devoted Episcopalian, dies at 84 |
[March 24, 2022] Madeleine Albright, the former secretary of state who wrote about her complex faith journey to The Episcopal Church and served in leadership roles at various Episcopal institutions, died March 23 of cancer. She was 84.
Albright was the first female secretary of state, serving from 1997 to 2001. Previously, she served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997. READ MORE

House of Bishops condemns war in Ukraine, anti-transgender legislation at first in-person gathering since COVID-19 pandemic |
[March 22, 2022] The House of Bishops voted unanimously to issue statements condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and political actions targeting transgender people at its March 15-21 meeting. The House met in person for the first time since September 2019, with 133 bishops and bishops-elect present, at Camp Allen, a retreat center near Navasota, Texas, owned by the Diocese of Texas.
