EPCOR Rate Increase to Appear on Next Billing Statement
Catch-Up Charge for February, March to be Spread Over 3 Months
EPCOR water rates became effective on February 1st of this year. However, due to a mathematical error in the initial order prepared by the Corporation Commission, EPCOR was unable to program the new rates into their billing system correctly until this month. Because of this, Paradise Valley customers will see the new rates for the first time on this month’s bills.

As a result, Paradise Valley customers will see a “catch-up charge” that allows EPCOR to collect the lost revenue from the delayed implementation (missing revenues from February and March). This charge will be spread across the April, May and June bills in order to minimize the impact to customers. For most PV customers, this charge will be about $10-$30 (or $3.33-$10 per month from April-June). Approximately 20 customers will see charges of over $100 (or $33 per month). Additionally, some customers will see a bill credit (decrease) over the next few months as a result of the catch-up charges.

Constituent inquiries regarding the implementation phase for our new rates over the next couple of months can be directed to the Customer Care department at Customers can call 1-800-383-0834 (hold times are longest between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm).
Coffee with a Cop Features Info on Drowning
Top Right: National Rank of State Drowning Rates, Age 0-4, 2008-2017. Drowning Deaths per 100,000 children. (Arizona is in red)

Middle Right: Mayor Bien-Willner and other residents receive a drowning prevention presentation from Melissa Sutton at this week’s Coffee with a Cop.

Bottom Right: Mayor Bien-Willner and Vice Mayor Thomasson (center) and other residents speak with Paradise Valley Police Officers after Wednesday’s Coffee with a Cop session.
On April 6th, the Police Department hosted our first post-pandemic, in-person Coffee with a Cop looking at the issue of home drownings.

As shown below in the state-by-state ranking of drowning rates age 0-4, 2008-2017, Arizona ranked third worst in the country, after Florida and Oklahoma. And, at 4.4 deaths per 100,000, we have twice the national average.
Over the past six months the Town of Paradise Valley has had several near-drowning incidents. As the weather warms up, family activities around water will likely also begin to increase. The CDC lists drowning as the leading cause of unintentional injury and death for children aged 0-4 years. Regardless of the time of year, drowning is preventable. Melissa Sutton from the Arizona Drowning Prevention Coalition, joined us.

The video will be posted at the PVPD YouTube site shortly. In the meantime, you can watch all safety programs at the PVPD YouTube site.

Join us in-person on Wednesday, May 4th at 7:30 am at the PVPD when a specialist from the Arizona Counter-Terrorism Information Center (ACTIC) will be presenting safety tips during active threat incidents.

The Gallery at Mountain Shadows New Art - April 13-May 31
Heart of Stone: Lena Klett and Christy Wittmer
Visit The Gallery at Mountain Shadows from April 13 through May 31 to check out their new exhibition, Heart of Stone, by Phoenix-based artists Lena Klett and Christy Wittmer.

In this exhibition, Lena and Christy present both their singular visions along with collaborating on an installation that reflects their combined interests in themes of impermanence, architecture, nature, and human interaction with space and landscape. Christy implements traditions of craft and design with clay constructions that challenge expectations of function and notions of stability, while Lena explores abstraction and play, utilizing economical and ephemeral materials as tools to reimagine an object and bring it out of a readily understood context.

The opening reception is April 13th from 5:00-7:00 pm, featuring an engaging discussion with the artists paired with light hors d'oeuvres and complimentary wine from Hearth '61.

The Town of Paradise Valley has a rich history with the arts. The Gallery is one opportunity to learn and enjoy from our local artists without having to travel far from home. Consider taking advantage of this great art show!
